Based on the photo he held up with his picture in the mirror it looks to be an Orly Blue bus.
He said it was decked out from soup to nuts. Must be a full house GoWesty unit. Probably 120 grand.
He also said they don't come up for sale very often and when he found this one he jumped on it. Wonder if he got it from the Samba classifieds?
Hope old Tom postes some pics on here... _________________ 1990 Vanagon RS 2.1

A rare dementia indeed. Tom Hank's brother Jim (and traveling partner for that trip) is my girlfriends uncle by marriage- I am super interested to find out where the Syncro came from..will investigate. |

He may be a little unfamiliar with his van, but I find it really cool that he owns one. I wonder if he drives it or just lets it sit parked. I also would love it if he could help me figure out this temp gauge problem!! _________________ Binger

it seems its mirror is an older one (non electrical). Can it be on a late tricked out syncro?
Things breaking down a couple of miles away back from the repair shop....
He seems to be in the boat like all of us!

I think it's great that another smart individual has discovered and is taking part in our hobby and passion. He's obviously in a different economic reality than most of us, lucky bastard I've enjoyed most of his work and will forever consider him one of the luckiest guys of all times. He owns a syncro westy AND got to perform with the remaining Monthy Python crew
This thread is a bit sad though. So much besserwissing and envy. Why all the degrading comments? Isn't it absolutely obvious that you're a rookie when you start with something you have previous experience in? That goes for all of us! _________________ 88 Westfalia Club Joker syncro AAZ i/c

agreed taigagreen, the vanagon trip has been a long, strange, educational one. I'm just glad Hanks didn't buy one of those steroidal sportmobiles...oops there's some besserwissing. Wonder if he keeps it at his summer house just up the road in prime Idaho syncro habitat? |

I think its pretty cool. And I think the 70's comment might have been a metaphor for cars in general just because they were mostly all ugly in the 70's. Im sure he knows what years it is. He has a few cars from what I have heard he is a bit of a vw collector. _________________ 95 GMC Yukon 6.5 TD 2 Door Tow pig/ Daily driver.

I've been told Terry Hatcher drives a Westy, too.
I doubt any of us would start watching Desparate Housewives, though.

Yup, I got what he was meaning.... He meant busses in the sense that they were cute in the 70's but morphed into something odd. That's was the star trek comment. Don't count the guy out on a interview flub. They guy's a comedian and what he says has to appeal to the masses. It's not like he could spew 10 minutes of technical jargon about vanagons and still hold an audiences attention. WE are a limited and eccentric audience. What we see as important will bore the majority of regular folks. _________________ One day as a lion, or a lifetime as lamb

Agreed. Who knew the engine was in the rear, the brake fluid inside the dash, and the wiper fluid under the carpet without prior knowledge or VW experience. I'll never forget my glee upon discovering the auxiliary battery box - 4 months after owning my van. _________________ '85 Westy |

Maybe this one from GoWesty. They said the purchase's name was "Harlan", yeh, right... Notice the absence of the buyer in the photo. They usually post a shot of the van with the purchaser. hmmm, Harlan, Hank...

Thanks Tom. My wife is totally in love with Mr. Hanks. Much like those screeming girls of old Beatles footage, if fact I'd be willing to bet if Tom was a musician(probably is) My wife would leave me and follow him around the country like The Dead. Probably even in one of my vans.
In any case, I used the "See, Tom is trying to be like me." arguement selling her on my grandfathered VW attributes from our meeting 7 years ago. Oh how I love the "I told you so's."
A little Hanks goes a long way in my world......and yeah I'm a Hanks fan myself..Gotta give it up, wonderful actor and role model. A bright spot in the mass of bad pubic figures.
good stuff..

I say do not rag on him to much. He is right about it being a 70's car as all of you should have pointed out the Vanagon came out in 1980 and was designed in the 70's so he is a little right. Cool guy and even cooler now we know he drives a Syncro westy. So next time you see one on the road give a wave it just might be Tom Hanks |

Misery loves company.
I recently had to leave my Syncro in AZ due to a break down and this story really made me feel better... |

An unnamed GoWesty source would neither confirm nor deny their involvement in his Westy. _________________ 89 Syncro Westy - GW 2.5, now with a double knob job

cool...another one saved ..... someone who has that much cash should make the full utility of that van a reality with a good engine ( porsche flat 6) solar panals and mondo triple battery system....it could be a mobile command center capable of finding many privates... _________________ dcdubs/glcustoms

I would hope that for the kind of money that Go Westy gets for a restored syncro that the speedo, odometer and fuel sender continue to work for more than 18.6 miles.
He said he was looking for one, and one came up... I bet he got it from elsewhere... and he's telling a story on Letterman, to make it a good story you gotta embelish a little. I bet he knows them better than you think.
I love his description of the syncro quirks... very common problems on all 20+ year old syncros...adds to the excitement of driving one.
My speedo stops working every now and then, pressing the trip odm. reset brings it back to life. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru
