And it still looks good from what I can see in the pic. Someone's gonna be a happy camper.

Beautiful bus. I hope the owner can get it back, assuming he or she still wants it. Looks like it's been restored, judging from the dash photo in the linked news feature and the picture shown here. I might be interested in this bus if they can't find the owner or they don't want it, but at the age of 63 with (a little) more common sense than I had as a younger man, I don't think I should be driving a forward-control vehicle like a VW Bus on a regular basis, as anyone in their right mind would do with this Bus.

Authorities report the current owner of the car is an insurance company. The vehicle was released to Los Angeles authorities, and the owner was notified.

While anything's possible, I doubt they'll just give it away. Since the cops were able to determine that it was stolen in the first place, there seems to be a record going back those 35 years.
I wonder who restored it? The current owner/buyer/seller's gotta be pissed! Especially if they didn't know it was stolen.

Looks like it's in the original condition... Maybe they stole it, stuck it a container, and it just sat there in its original condition. That's what I would like to think Very Happy

You got to buy it from an insurance company, and in that case, Major Woody has first dibs.

Me too, when I first saw the title. I was slightly dissapointed once I read the story.

I would so roll that thing.
The insurer will just have it auctioned, assuming the insurer is still in business.
I bet there is more to the story, like that the bus was recovered after the insurer paid the policyholder for the loss, but that whoever bought it never applied for a title because the intent was to restore it and ship it overseas to the new buyer.

Cars change hands all the time without titles.

They call him Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning,
No-one you see, is smarter than he,
And we know Flipper, lives in a world full of wonder,
Flying there-under, under the sea!

Everyone loves the king of the sea,
Ever so kind and gentle is he,
Tricks he will do when children appear,
And how they laugh when he's near!

They call him Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning,
No-one you see, is smarter than he,
And we know Flipper, lives in a world full of wonder,
Flying there-under, under the sea!

The article above states the owner is Allstate. That means they'll crush it and sell it for scrap. Idiots.

It's stated in the article that Allstate would try to contact the original owner. I guess that would be to offer it back to him. In analysis, if the $2500 was invested in U.S. Treasury bearer-bonds 35 years ago that investment would be now valued at at least $25,000, if not more. The VW's value would be $25K-$50K, depending on some variables. Thusly, vintage VW's are proven to be an excellent investment, as well as a lot of fun.

I wonder what Allstate would do from a PR perspective? With all those commercials, I would assume they'd offer it back to the claimant for the amount pay and that move would return many more times any $20K+ gain they would realize to sell it at auction.

HaHa that was going to be my response.

"Due to the dangerous nature of this old vehicle we are going to do the responsible thing by having it destroyed. This will help every one who is insured through Allstate by reducing your premium because this thing will no longer be on the road."

One thing that isn't mentioned, what would this car's condition be in if it really had sat in a container for 35 years? The genius that wrote the article seemed to think it was unrestored.

You're comparing apples to oranges, the money in a U.S. Treasury bearer-bond has no maintenance, insurance or storage fees, in 35 years that ads up. You do get to enjoy it by driving it and that's priceless but not a investment.
