Great Grandfather was Irish and his name was John but he spelled it Jno, is that an old time Irish or may be Gaelic way of spelling John?

I've never seen that name used, it wasn't just abbreviated for official records?

The Irish for John is Seán. Never saw or heard of Jno. What was his last name? Maybe it is his initials?
