Great job on this build. Where did you get your pans from? _________________ 1965 Sunroof Beetle

Bought the pans locally from a VW specialist, Mark1. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

None lately. Been working on the wife's Thing, and a Buggy project for a friend. I'm really starting to be frustrated. It's just sitting in the garage in my way lately. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Well, it's been entirely too long. I got sick of tripping over the Bug while working on other VW projects, so I finally decided to work on it.
I cut the area of the back window out that I had been trying to fix.
Then trimmed the replacement off of the 66 parts car we bought a while back.
It still needs a little work and trimming before I weld it in... Removed a ton of spot welds off of it that held it's old package tray in.
Then I took the beam apart. Took all the arms, spindles, and tie rods off of it. Going to scrap the beam, it's rusted beyond repair. Powder coating the arms, spindles, tie rods, etc. Going to put them on the 66's old beam.
Pulled the hard fuel line out of the tunnel while I was dirty. As soon as I finish blasting the tunnel, the new stainless steel fuel line goes in.
I cleaned the garage up quite a bit while I was at it, as to encourage me to work on the Bug and not have junk in the way.,

I must say, I was starting to lose interest. Even considering getting rid of it. Now that I finally worked on it, I'm feeling better. Even kind of excited. Just need to keep working and making progress. I really want to see this project through. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

A little more 67 progress today.
Trimmed the panel up. Almost ready to tack it in and make sure the window fits. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Just sorted through some stuff I hope to be able to sell at the Bug Out tomorrow. I'm also hoping to but all the parts to put the beam back together. Should be some more progress soon. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Sean,
Excellent work my man! What are you using to do your media blasting? For example, media type and grit. Also what gun would be helpful. Thanks and keep it up, you're doing great. |

Just stumbled upon this thread... Wow! This is definitely an inspiration to me to dig deep and restore my '66 right. Keep at it and good luck! |

I really need to get back to working on it full time. I've been side tracked helping other people for close to 2 years. On the final stages of the last project I'm helping. Then back to the bug. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Ok, been a long time but I finally worked on my 67 today. I have moved the body a few houses down to a friends garage so I decided to work on the pan. It had been frustrating me for a while anyway, so i decided to concentrate on it.
I cut a few access holes for the fuel line to run through. Welded up the clutch tube while I was in there.
Welded the up back closed
Here you can see I started tacking in the pans, Napoleons hat, and bottom plate. There off slightly and i need to cut the tacks and move things back a little on the passenger side. Drivers side is perfect. You can also see the new stainless steel fuel line in that shot.
That's it for now, but hopefully next weekend I'll get on it some more. Starting to see progress.

I can't believe the thread has lasted long enough to add my two cents. I'd like to offer a thought on the color and final fit outs. You have made a herculean effort to restore/rebuild a classic car, making certain that you remain true to the engineering and design - no shortcuts, no plastic. Why not carry that through to the end, meaning finish it as better than a NOS original. Keep the Savannah Beige, which exudes Beetle class, and use (silver) painted steel wheels and VW baby moons. After all, you're not putting nerf bars on (thankfully) or using someone else's ideas about how to make it look unique (that thinking is so common that "unique" cannot be applied). I would imagine that you'll paint it as well as you've done everything else - masterfully, so why use a color that will show every surface scratch and cause you to get rid of every waxy swirl mark by using a darker color than the SB? Making the car look as if it were hidden away in a dry, warm closet for all these decades is more of a statement than a faux hotrod-looking car that just doesn't wow anyone. How would you react to someone else's car such the one I've suggested? I would bet that once you stopped drooling, you'd be more impressed with a classic original than a pedestrian bastardized version. The craftsmanship you're employing shouldn't be lost to "fashion" - go with real "style". Think of it as a work of art that demands respect because of its quality. What a remarkable job you've done. |
