Yeah my bug runs like crap too, I think the distributor drive gear is worn and makes it impossible to time accurately. I have a brand new svda I want to put in but I gotta get the gear issue straightened out first. _________________ 73 SB, Hormiga |

a-ha!
finally figured out what's wrong with my carbs!
On monday, I got them taken off, cleaned, and fixed up at work.
Turns out, the idle jets, both of them, are ruined!
So, I'm trying to get in contact with the people at Mr.Kadron to get some of their specially made idle jets.
Also, as a x-mas gift to myself, I've finally ordered the last of the bits to my pop-out windows!
and, at work, they're installing a brand new engine dyno, so by next summer, when I get my Beetle gone through, they'll be able to test my engine out of the car,
and this is quite cool in my opinion. _________________ (0\!/0) 1966 Beetle - daily driver. |

Oi!
I can't even drive mine for another week! I had some minor surgery last week, and because of that I can't use a clutch pedal until sometime next week.
So I'm stuck. sitting here with nothing to do. :'( _________________ (0\!/0) 1966 Beetle - daily driver. |

so I just spend two hours replacing the idle jets, which were ruined.
My boss had told me to expect a big difference when I got that fixed.
However, while the engine running has changed, it still idles on only one cylinder!
I mean, the rest of the driving is MUCH smoother now, and I'm grateful, but then I hit a stoplight and the whole car rocks back and forth because the idle is so rough.
Whatever, I'll be at work on monday, and I'll get the engine looked at again.

Are you running a balance tube between the manifolds? I don't understand the science behind but it seems to be a common problem with dual 1barrel setups. _________________ 73 SB, Hormiga |

no, I'm not running a balance tube.
It's supposed to let the system "self balance" by connecting the manifolds, so the pressure will be equalized.
I don't run one because it's sort of a patch fix, rather than just getting the carbs tuned properly.
Some people swear by them, but I was lucky enough to see some work by a guy who'd tested engines with and without a balance tube on a dyno. The results showed no appreciable difference if the engine was properly tuned to begin with. _________________ (0\!/0) 1966 Beetle - daily driver. |

So my car is FINALLY tuned, with no broken parts!!!!
And it's been decided that this summer, along with many other changes, I'm changing my car to a single Weber carb.
Dual carbs are to much trouble, and with a 1641cc, they don't serve any sort of performance advantage over a single carb setup.

I finished tearing my engine down last night, then I get home from work and this happens Picked up the case to move it and it fell right off, Then I decided to tap on the other side to see how hard it is to break, three taps with a RUBBER mallet and it busted off too. _________________ 73 SB, Hormiga |

ouch.
well, at least it was already apart.
Man, at some point that engine must have been run really hard, or with very low oil for quite a while. Wow.
I'd say you might need to check the crank out a bit before you reassemble.
Better to have to replace something now, than get it all the way together, just to have something break again.
good luck! _________________ (0\!/0) 1966 Beetle - daily driver. |

^ thanks!
So I just went out and messed with my front brakes, and re-charged the beam with grease.
Hopefully now the front brakes won't lock up so easily, and the front suspension won't creak.
I actually spun the car 360 in traffic the other day. fun.
I have $1175 so far, hopefully by summer I'll have about $2500-$3000
Also, I found a pic of a beetle that is 'EXACTLY' what my beetle's going to look like when I finish it.
(But about an inch lower in the rear.) _________________ (0\!/0) 1966 Beetle - daily driver. |
