What build would you recommend for about 150 hp?
and when i say daily driver my "commute" is about 10 miles a day and thats the days i drive and do not bum a ride. I would say i put 200 miles a month on my car, and at most 400 miles a month. |

2110cc
dpr 82mm crank
90.5 mahles
cb lightwieghts/wiesman/udos
Steve Tims 2/drd L6 or 7's/CB wedgeports @ 44x37's
chromoly pushrods
k8/k10 cam
1.5 deep sump
full flow
48 Drla's/45 Drla's/ 48 IDA/FI?
9.5 to 1
7000.00 parts plus machinework. ( engine only)
150-160+hp.
Or you can go turbo route w/ a 1915. I have no experience on turbos.-Jon
Details that would help: what kind of vehicle, what kind of tranny. _________________ 2276 IDA's 86C 11-1 DD !

Why stop there? It'd be even better as a 2275... _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747

You sound like Bernie Bergmann... why build a 1776 when you can build a 2332 for a few dollars more?
2110 is a great daily driver. My only concern are the dual springs on the Stage 2 heads, otherwise it would last as long as a stock engine. _________________ Glenn

A 2332 is much harder to build than a 2275. Only difference between a 2110 and a 2275 is 94mm pistons, and the combo of that engine with good heads, K8 cam, and 44 IDF's is a proven winner. I'm all about bang for the buck. _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747

what going to be the difference between 44 IDF's and 45 DRLA's?
I thought I would be running IDA's on my 2165 (FK8, L6 heads) but I'm thinking I might just use some Italian 44 IDF's that are available.
This is considering that I want a cruiser/ some time DD as opposed to a light-to-light bandit. |

44 IDF's will be plenty for a street 2165. _________________ Greg

Why the 150hp target?
For as much as you drive, I'd consider just building a lively 1915...most will be a bit shy of 150hp...but you're still talking about a car that has the potential to go low 14-sec quarters.
I drive your typical monthly commute in a week, sometimes a day...with IDA's on a 1775. |

44 idf's grow on trees relative to 45 DRLA's, apart from that, they are much of a muchness but the DRLA's would win in a fight. |

45 DRLAs are more like 48 IDFs in term of flow. I pulled these CFM numbers from an old thread at STF, which probably got them from an old Hot VWs article I recall:
45 DRLA = 329.3 cfm
44 IDF = 292.3 cfm
40 DRLA = 266.4 cfm
40 IDF = 212.8 cfm
36 DRLA = 205.8 cfm
These were for each carb, so double the figures for a pair. I don't have the numbers for 48 IDF or 48 DRLA. _________________ 1966 Karmann-Ghia convertible |

A quick little VW has an ~85hp stock-valve 1775...150hp will make you one of the faster cars on the street...keeping up with or being faster than most turbo 4's and healthy 6 cyl cars, to a point. |

are you trying to kill him Darth?
Is this another one of those 'fun thing' threads where someone who has only ever driven a 40 horse bug wants to run 11 seconds against a camaro?
I think the OP should be aware that a muscle car can weigh 2 or 3 times as much as a bug so all HP estimates need to be toned down accordingly.
Personally, I think a nice little 1776 costing a couple of grand, carefully spent, will be more than enough for some 'fun' Chucking 7 or 8K at a motor as a first timer is just plain daft. Remember, 150 HP will not let you go any faster on the road, it'll just get you up there faster |

Have you looked into going to a Type 4? From a reliability standpoint you can't beat it with a T1 case. Period. From a money standpoint, you can build a 2.0L for the same money w/ Raby's DTM cooling for about the same money. Either way you'll have to upgrade your transmission, so plan on that as well.

150hp isnt crazy.
i dont understand why everyone acts like its a big deal.
in a true daily driver i wouldnt want anything less than 150.
for that i would use:
82x90.5
fk46
heads that flow 190cfm or so
9:1cr
48mm carbs
1 5/8" header
a tranny that will take that power should have bare minimum: a super diff, 9 tooth mainshaft, hardened 3/4 keyway and coarse tooth 3&4 (welded)

Yeah,no kidding. I read posts like these and think the same thing. It seems everybody assumes that a person asking these questions is a uncoordinated non-driving idiot who's never driven anything but a turd slow old Volkswagen. (Which on the other hand could be the case, but how can you tell over the internet?)
150hp in a street bug is probably about a mid 13 sec ride on average? FAR from a rocket these days. A kid in your average modded Evo,WRX,turbo AWD Talon/Eclipse/Laser etc would still pack your lunch out of a stop light. Especially if a the Bug is street trim with the belt on and on standard radial tires.
Having said that, you look and sound cooler going 13's in the VW... |
