I know that Type 1 front beam conversions are somewhat popular with the Type 3 guys that want to slam their cars. I am going to be going into uncharted territory and working on a project that will be doing the exact opposite: I'm going to help a fellow SoCal Bajas guy put a Type 3 front beam in his Type 1 to get more lift and travel! It's kind of a bizarre project, and nobody I know has ever tried doing this, but we're going to do it anyways.

So...

If anyone is interested in swapping beams and parts in the Southern California area, please PM me ASAP, as we're going to start this pretty soon.

If anyone else wants to watch the progress of a couple of real whacked out dudes, the build thread will be here:

Chow guys.

It's a great idea in the sense that the type3 beam is superior.

The big problem is, if you break something you can't just order a new one.

All in all makes more sense than doing the opposite(putting a type1 beam in a type3).

Have fun.

Is that over by the Elsinore Brewery and Elsinore Institute for The Mentally Insane, eh?

I have tried Interstate twice, and been burned twice. The man knows very little, and thinks the part you want is worth gold, and his wife is someone not to cross; in other words, you get an over priced part that has issues, it takes a lot to correct the problem, FYI.

I forgot, there is a yard in the LA area, but I forget the details. I think they said they had type 3 parts.

You're probably thinking of Russ's in Irwindale. They have one for $150.

Thanks for the support, guys. Let me figure out what's going to be easiest. I can't wait to start this one!

Oh.

And a complete frame head swap would probably be easiest. Easiest is not always best, so I'm not sure at this point how we're going to tackle it. I'll keep you guys posted.

Ja, I am almost sure, but the price is on the high side.

No problem man! Cool

Adriel, I have been to Interstate only once with Notchboy and I had a great experience. I found a set of Diamonite Rocker Trims ($10), an Early Ignition Switch and steering column ($40), and about 20 Type-3 early Hubcaps for about $5 each! That was a nice score! I think you need to go with our fearless Leader, Notchboy "The Man, The Myth, The Legend in His own Mind", and soon to be the Man with a Bay-Westy!

I live 3 miles from Russ's VW Recycling and they have a very limited Type-3 supply in their yard. Jason once posted a picture on here of his visit to Russ's where their junk-yard dog took a crap on a broken piece of a type-3 dash... true story.

Well, the folks that have success that I have heard is you two, and P.A.. Maybe the way to go is intimidating, or bring an intimidater. Since I am skinny and tender/kind, not very intimidating. Wink Laughing Oh, and inspect things well.

Good to know about Russ's. I did find another place in El Cajon, on North Magnolia called VW Classic's, and they have two type 3s, a '67 and '68 which I got the right door pillar from. They have a lot of parts, even found a complete '71 only steering column for $30.
