landers trial run for the 72 super beetle baja posponed for another two weeks. bought a new alternator, installed it and 15 minutes later it shorted out and went to ground internally melting all wires before they could be cut. guys think it is a chinese copy of a bosch alternator. i dont know but anyway they are getting a replacement. dont know if they will get the same type or spend extra money for a bosch, we will see. if it is chinese all i can say is they can never match german tech with thier tight production standards. anybody hear of alternators shorting out like this before thier even activated.....???
bradsdad.. yea im still learning

super beetle baja trial run in landers calif. first time out ............
car performed very well with no major problems. both smooth and rough roads aplenty. the rough roads sure tore up the left rear fender because of 10 inch wide tires, right fender just paint damage where tire rubbed. talking about going total baja on rear of car, baja fenders, getting rid of apron and deck lid, building cage. car engine also quit running instantly which was great in my opinion because it was a good lesson as to what can happen anywhere in the desert for Doyle the new owner. i sat in the dirt with him and said lets trouble shoot the problem. i showed him how to check out ignition system for spark from coil.....no spark...points werent firing. ok lets check coil, yes coil was hot ok. lets check points, points were hot, turned out points were breaking properly but not making contact electrically because of material transfer. doyles wife Kim had a finger nail file and we cleaned them enough to make contact. good lesson for them. got new wheels and tires for rear of car. more work ahead ..FUN ...bradsdad

So i put Gin to work yesterday and she removed the steeringbox from a spare beam i had. It took her about 10 minutes to get it removed. I figured she owed you since she was the first to crash the baja two years ago when she was 10, lol.

The removal

havnt posted to much lately................Brad's uncle David passed away from cancer on the 23rd. he was my only brother and fought cancer in several forms for eight years. first in the throat, 6 years later in the tongue and 2 years after that in the lungs. he had lung surgery but never recovered.
he died 21 days after the operation. well ive been to tucson twice in 6 weeks and now im going back again on may 2nd for a funeral. maybe after this is all over i can get back out in the desert and beat the shit out of the baja again. "cancer sucks" i mean "f cancer" oh well things should get back to normal soon.
