Besides the mounting bolt changes from early through late oval up to the 58-60 hood is there a width change for the front of the hood where the locking mechanism is or latch?

Did the 4 tab ever have a raised section like the later 3 tab?

Hi guys,

Does anyone make a reproduction piece of JUST the triangle brace plate itself?

Kaefer Nostalgie advertise one, but it looks incorrect and has 3 holes, whereas i'm sure my rusty triangle has only 2 holes that the badge tabs come through?

KN's part:

The holes also look far too small, but could be just the photo when compared to OE:

Time is not a luxury that we all have, so was simply checking to see if there was a more economically viable option Smile

Well, that's why I typed 4 bolts. '56-'57 is definally 4 bolts.

Frank,
I think he was talking about the hood that I have. You listed it as 56-57 4 Bolt, but theres 5 Bolts..

*Which I will be selling, cause I need a correct hood.

I'm looking for identification points specific to 1957. so far I'm looking for a 4 tab emblem, no bracing at the lower corners, and now a five bolt mounting pattern? that leaves me with 2 questions.
1) are there any other variations to the 57 hood?
2) can you explain the need for an odd number of bolts? do you have a photo showing this odd bolt pattern mounted to the hinge?

thank you... j

It should be four bolt and NOT five bolt.

Note the four drain holes - two on the back bracing and one on each hinge support.

ok, this makes much better sense to me. the odd number bolt count didn't seem right, and I can see that the other holes are indeed there for drainage. that was another point I found confusing.

I'm looking at a 57 ragtop this weekend and trying to ID things I'll need to correct. can you tell me about the fenders I see in this image as well?

from the reading I've done this week it seems 56 was the last year for semaphore turn signals. then in 57 they went over to the bullets, and then in 58 or 60 they put the teardrop signals on top of the fenders.

it's the bullets that I found confusing. I'd thought they were specific to European import. but when I go looking for replacement fenders they come with bullet signals.

are bullet signals specific to the 57 only in America?

Semaphores were still being put on Beetles upto 1962 for the home (Germany) market. Late 1955 Exports to the USA were the start of the bullet turn signals - depending on who you ask. Wink http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=496830&highlight=1955+turn+signals
There are few good Threads about bullet fenders.

The early 4 bolt 4 tab hood was used from 1956-October of 1958. From November 1st of 1958-December or so of 1960 used the last style of the 4 tab.

I bought an used hood for my 57 oval. It looks correct 56-57 hood with 4 tabs, hood badge slots, 4 bolts however i noted some minor differences. Are they from difference year?

Top is my original, bottom is the replacement. Original with (drain?) holes, replacement with spot weld marks.

That style was used through October of '58, and that other hood looks like an aftermarket replacement. I've seen a few like that and a few things on them just don't look quite right.

Late ’53 to the end of ’54 Hood is just like the ’55 but with the triangle.

From the previous post, some earlier hood looks similar without holes but spot weld at corner.

The original color under the hinges appears to be L451 Indian Red, a 1960-only color.
