Well, thought I would post some pics of what ended up being an unexpected Christmas present. Stumbled across the add here on the Samba a couple days before Christmas for a 1960 here in Michigan. The car has 57,xxx miles on it...still has an oil change sticker on the door from 7600 miles. I thought it would make a decent warm meather driver while I continue to work on my basket case 58. So far it appears to be a fairly solid and unmolested but not a show piece. Needs some big clean up. One unexpected surprise is an access hole someone cut from the interior to the engine compartment...I guess to get to the generator nut. A little work with the MIG should fix that. The chrome seems to have taken quite a hit from being stored..need to look into getting the bumpers and headlight rings rechromed.

The car was originally purchased as Sig Wilson Motors in Marquette...so for its whole life in Michigan, I guess its expected to need heater channels. Not sure if I can patch them or go for the full replacement.
The engine is currently in boxes...but appears to have everything to reassemble, so thats my plan for the winter. Also seems to have an assortment of various extra parts like intakes and heater boxes. After that, a good cleanup to the interior..add some pop outs, clean up the brakes...and hope to put another bug back on the road next summer. It will be nice to be able to drive a VW to shows and such instead of my Cobalt.

Matt

Congratulations on the new project. It doesn't look messed with, and that's always a good thing. I see you also got a manual pump windshield washer. Double Plus Good!

I'm not real sure...last registration in the car is from '75...some of the paperwork appears that the engine was pulled down in the early 90's. The entire car exterior has a layer of crud.....that a quick rub of cleaner/wax won't remove. My guess is its been sitting a long time

Dammit! Why can't I find a score like that! I love 58-59-60's! Great score! Looks really original. Keep up posted on the progress.

I don't think so....its a split case. are there different variants of the old split case trans? I haven't checked the number off it yet.

Thanks DrDarby...but I think I have enough parts that came with the car to make two 36 hp engines...just missing one set of heads. Just need to clear some space in the basement. I should probably go work on that now while the kids are sleeping...

Thanks for the offer Jeffros....any chance you could recommend a competent VW machine shop in Michigan?

Well, I'm just about ready to get it on the road. Its been a little longer that I thought, but my projects usually take the back burner to everything else going on. Engine rebuild is complete, disc brakes, new brake lines, sealed up the gas tank, cleaned up a few grounds and just fixed my headlight switch today. Still need an alignment and new front chrome bumper bolts so I can put it back on.

Another 60 Indigo owner here, falling in love with yours!!! SUPER nice!

Love that you stayed with the 36r and still were lucky enough to have all the original fenders keeping the tail light in the correct location!

Thanks! I like the old 36 look. The rear fenders are actually old replacements from Mexico. Story goes that the original owner was not to good at backing up....and had them pretty bent up. These appear to have been put on quite some time ago. I had to correct the location of the rear lights following a thread somewhere on here. I still have some rust repair to do at the front and rear of the heater channels...but I think I'm going to skip it for now and just drive it this year

Got the front and rear toe set today. Getting real close to being on the road. Still need to fix my headlight switch, clean up and reinstall the front bumper and make a tie down strap/clamp for my 6v Optima battery. Hope to drive it out to the 131 Bug Run.
