That's awesome! I steam cleaned a few boogers and ass stains off my plaid when I got my Westy. Great photo. |

Never knew an aunt & uncle had a bus until spotting this photo online.
Guessing the photo is around 1980. This late bay is in it's prime no more than a few years old. They would have been traveling from Sacramento to see my folks in Bakersfield with 5 of my cousins and all their stuff.

My sister and me camping with friends around '81 or '82? with Dad's '71 in the background... ha ha I remember that zero shirt.
Later restored that bus in high school after he signed it over to me, eventually sold her for $1200 in '93 to pay some college bills.
Life was hard for VW's in Minnesota- that bus was RUSTY! _________________ Ritterlich im Kriege, wachsam für den Frieden |

In the 1970s
in Michigan
it was downright unpatriotic
damn near commonist
to drive a damn furrin car
you was taking jobs from your cousins in Flint and Dearborn
my relatives still believe that. _________________ 73 Beetle Baja, Ghia front brakes, Type 3 rear brakes, 2220 ( 94 X 80 ), Weber Progressive, Bosch SVDA, '97 Mustang seats

Yep, we had the St Paul Ford plant here until just recently...sad tale.
I remember Country Squire wagons with bumper stickers saying "Hungry ? Eat your Foreign car!"
For years the Anoka FD would knock on our door and ask Dad if we wanted to donate that "POS" 1970 Squareback for the annual smash a car with a sledgehammer ritual....lol. _________________ Ritterlich im Kriege, wachsam für den Frieden |

Recently found this photo. The 68 bus, my GF (now my wife), me getting ready to go skiing at Mountain High, CA, circa 1980. Note the expensive bumper. I was in college in SD, and the bus never had a bumper. I was doing construction work PT, and I took this 2x6 from a job site...

Well, yeah, why wouldn't it be, it was 2 years old! lol |
I wish I was old enough to remember what these were like when they were new… Or the '70s… Or SOMETHING other than minivans and plastic sedans as a child…
I asked my uncle what it was like to drive one when they were new, and he said "Just like it is now, but with a cigarette in one hand." _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

'69 loaded and landed in Northern Alberta in 1970. I was technically along for this ride as I was a few months from being born. Unfortunately after this trip the rear fenders were cut out for the big baja tires and other cartoonish mods.
Would you think that got pushed around in the wind a bit? |

It happened just the other day ... '70 in '74 => Woods Hole, Mass ... still dressed in the "whites" from Pocono Speedway...
After the first and only engine fire ... '67 in '76 => South Miami ... a backfire lit up the oil bath air filter - had to go fishing for a carb jet that got knocked lose putting the fire out with a hand towel - sometimes you make your own luck ☯ ...

Here is my 1973 VW bus in 1979 with my Doberman Sabrina, named after the character on the TV show, Charlie's Angels. I was sporting the Cosmic Cowboy look like Willie and Waylon and Michael Murphy. This was taken at my sister's home in Dripping Springs, TX. I sold the bus and bought a new 1980 VW Rabbit to go to graduate school. I gave away the dog because she didn't like my new born son. When my son was 15 and being a typical teen, I wondered if I made the right choice! _________________ If you only have one tool in your tool box, and it's a hammer, pretty soon, everything looks like it needs to be whacked!

The appliance business next door always had a couple of buses to make deliveries with. That is me with the skis getting ready to hit the slopes. I also remember jumping up and down on the roof of the non working bus just for fun sometimes. Seems I have been enjoying buses for most of my life. Makes me cringe when I think of that now.

Great last few photos.
The red bus with the snow all over reminds me of when I drove to Vail, CO from L.A. to work and ski for the winter (1983). First night, it dumped like 24" +/- and I went out to where I thought I had parked my bus. Took me two hours to find and dig out. I obviously missed my job interview that day...
Darrell, got that Lynyrd Skynrd look going on back then. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein
