Awesome, I probably seen you at one or more of those stores, VW Heaven. How can anyone forget that store in the 80s.
One story goes like this. Rolling my 58 Kabriolett all stock black with white walls and another Kab out of nowhere gets next to me and rev`s his motor and there I was rolling a 1200! Went to the pad cos I had parts from another car I had and slammed some alloys a 1835 and went looking for the guy/car and never found him. That`s what it took to lower that 58. Traded it away in the mid 90`s.

That`s down the street from my house, It was a hang out very early in my time and just missed the last of it. Back in those days you knew what neighborhoods to stay out of so there I am rolling to the house about 1AM and took some back streets cos at that hr of the night it can get crazy. I`m going over a hill driving my 57 Chop top and noticed a very bright light, The kind that blind you well as I got closer I noticed it was a patrol car with all their lights on cos they had a car pulled over on the side of the street. I`m going about ten miles an hr so not to bring any attention to myself and as I get closer to the cops they stop what they are doing and looked at me. Not a typicle glance but really trying to see who it was. I had my windows up and they were black as night so no way they could tell. As I pass them up I`m looking at them also and both cops run I mean RUN to their patrol car. I was thinking I didnt do anything! so I turned my lights off and floored it. I was close to my house so I knew the streets very well. As I start to gain speed a mini truck gets in my way. Yeah we had mini trucks all of all kinds and colors rolling around too. I could not pass the small truck cos the lane was to small so I honk the horn and he moves over and starts to block the police from catching up to me. I`m thinking I`m home free! About three blocks from the house there was another police car on my tail with all his lights off also and up the street two more police cars headed towards me. BUSTED!! I pull over in the middle of the street rite in front of my home and my Dad comes running out cussing at the police and my neighbor from across the street bust out his movie camera! One cop grabs me by the ear and pulls me to the curb and ask me why I ran? I simply replied with "why`d you pull me over running to your cars like I did something" Cops told me I would be thanking them if my car was stolen.. Pshh! They had me on the curb and took my car apart but didnt find nothing. All that took about an hr and they let me go with no ticket. I would not run today tho!
I had this car at the time.

I just scored three years ('85 through '87) worth of VW Trends magazines yesterday in the mail... a lot of the same cars being discussed here were featured during that era, including Sound of Speedy, Ragberry, etc. Lots of imagination wrapped up in those cars from that period of time... while it's painful for me to see those "angle cut" or "center mount" fan shrouds on some of the engines, I dig the overall style and execution.
I also wish we had 1985-87 prices today in 2012! lol |

Here is how I see it. With today`s builds and ideas some crazy stupid and some crazy nice back in the day we didn`t have to many cars to compare with and get ideas for our own future builds. We were creating the look and it took off from there. |
