For sure Alex! We'll have CRG's Bus leading it too!!

I honestly think we could put together some nostalgic cruises a few times a year.. Weve got some serious OGs coming back into the scene. Just imagine having Ruben Navarro bringing in a group from the SGV and the L.A. boys bringing in the other group and meeting at Arrys on a Friday or Saturday night. Arrys was always a good halfway point of the scene. Talk about memories and the thrill to be around the guys with our VDubs again and im sure there will also be a few of the younger generation that would want to live the early history. I think we could do it and it would be cool as hell.. Im in with my bucket no matter what!!! J8Bug

I know im always dreaming but Im really feeling that ^. Besides this thread nothing is really being done on the streets to commemorate the 80s scene we lived in L.A/SGV... We can have the founder of the baddest VDub club on the planet come from the east and Bad TemperII coming from the west to meet up in the middle at Arrys. Talk about OGs leading the packs, DAYAAAAAMMNN!!! Drool I think it can grow to be something big over the years. Who isnt going to want to jump at the opportunity to cruise with some of the legends/pioneers of the L.A scene???

I'm in, we should discuss our cruise night at the Classic!

Talking with the OGs that were afilliated with that club you could tell deep down they wish they could restart it but there is hesitation because of the stigma attached to the name. I Say, GO FOR IT!!! We have all matured and no matter if you were in Huntington Park, Puente, ELA, Highland Park or South Central we were all up to the same shenanigans. J8Bug the BugBuddies were the OG outlaw badboy VW Club for sure in the early 80s LA party/cruise scene & now putting the pieces together after talking to Ruben was the reason the German Folks GFK's were started!! ...............The only way I would revive the name if I had the blessing of any other OG..........the only one that I know I possibly could locate is locked up for life and shouldn't be hard to write him a letter..........So J8Bug you never know bro.

This bus was called "Wet dream" If you went to the old Coors Beer sponsored VW Jamboree in the OC you would have seen it in person. Back then a bus like that was crazy to see so fixed up.This was Linda Sobek, A mod le who was murdered by her photographer and was once a Raiderette.

Listening to you guys tell stories of the Bugs Buddies was awesome!!! Listening to those stories is what takes me back to my roots. That had to be 1980, 81 or so when I was just getting behind the wheel of my first bug and i could relate to you guys from also having hung out with older outlaws in my neighborhood. I say give it a shot, it might even get other OGs out of the woodwork... we're all grown-up now..

Ive talked to a few other guys from the 80s and they are also definetly interested. Frank Ochoa from my old neighborhood in particular I have been trying to convince to get on this thread without luck but the mention of a nostalgia cruise and for that he is willing to get a few of his 80s cars that he held onto and out of storage. Ruben also likes the idea. Its how we used to hit the streets which is what the Vdub lifestyle was all about back then. Sounding good!!!

So last weekend was the Bug-In at Irwindale Raceway in SOCAL. This was the first time I that I have been back to a VW event and actively participating again after maybe 25 years!! (I have been to VW events over the years that I happen to get wind of locally but only as a spectator by myself quietly in the background checking out the latest trends etc.) So I met up with guys that were heavy in the scene like I was in the 80's. I met up with some of the fellas from back then. I meet up with some VW Racers that go way back to LA street racing days. I meet up with and meet guys that I knew of & were part of the cruising/party scene in 80's LA and what was really cool was that I was able to meet up with guys that I know from the 80's Orange County Cal-look scene from clubs like DKK. As I mentioned earlier in my posting here I had a unique & fortunate perspective because working for the retail VW parts stores in the 80's I was able to make friends across all the spectrums of the VW hobby. It was cool talking about the street racing days & are big engine adventures with the OC guys ( I was always a speed demon first because I got into cars from the racing end first, growing up with an old racer guy that lived at the deadend of my block as a kid)......walking the racing pits brought back all the sweet sounds, sights, & smells of aircooled racing!! Also walking the swap meet area brought back a bunch of good memories as I was searching for the correct rear dimpled fenders for my projects ( I ended up buying everyone I saw, cause now getting back in to the scene realized how hard it is to find them) Walking the car show area with an OG from the 80's LA scene was special too as we got nostalgic and pointed out the things we did back then and what is different now...........Can't wait for the Classic to meet up with some OG's and rekindle old friendships & make new ones.

Seeing you after all those years immediately took me back to the simple days when me and my best friend Gramps used to go to the Jerry's in Bell Gardens and you and another guy were always behind the counter. Its crazy how its been that long because it seems like it was just yesterday.

Cool story on these original 2 piece Empi 5 spokes (before repops) was I had these polished at Rainbow polishing in El Monte (the old man that used to wear a paper hat & was always covered in grey dust) & the old man tripped when I brought just the front halfs to polish because it was the first set of Original 5 spokes to get the full polish job I remember him telling me. Prior to that guys used to only polish the lip and color paint match the center (cal-look). This was around 1982!! CALSTYLE!!!

In L.A. before there were internet computers and Ebay and Samba and Craigslist and even for those that couldnt wait or always make the drive to Pomona Swapmeet there was The Recycler at 6am on Thursday mornings. I made so much bank off this publication thru the mid to late 80s that by Oct 0f 1990 I had bought my first property. By the early 90s the salvage business in L.A. had blown up in large part to The Recycler that it was time for me to move on to something else. I had pulled so many cars with a towbar by then that I later decided that doing it by starting a towtruck company should be a piece of cake. I sold most of my assets (except for one of my bugs of course) at the ripe age of 36 and have been semi-retired and bored ever since thanks in large part to The Recycler...
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So many great things came about from the use of The Recycler early on that I found some to share. Not only were they limited to the L.A. area. As you will read it also affected American pop culture;
By the 1980's The Recycler Brand was well known regionally and at least three famous bands of the 1980's were formed by people who answered ads in The Recycler. Mick Mars joined Mötley Crüe after placing an ad answered by drummer Tommy Lee. James Hetfield answered an ad placed by Lars Ulrich, ultimately leading to the birth of Metallica. Ulrich placed another ad shortly after while the band was in search of a lead guitarist. The ad was answered by temporary member/co-songwriter and future Megadeth founder and frontman Dave Mustaine. Also Duff McKagan replied to an ad placed by Slash and Steven Adler leading to an early incarnation of Guns N' Roses.

By 1998 the publication had grown to print ten regional editions including Los Angeles, Orange County, Ventura, Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, South Bay, Burbank/ Pasadena/ Glendale, San Diego, San Fernando Valley and Las Vegas. The Times purchased all but the San Diego and Las Vegas editions which were sold independently and phased out of print within a year after the acquisition.

That paper was the only form of communication in those days. I pulled a 55 Oval when I got my very 1st job that came from Echo Park from that publication. I had a friend who had them scattered all over his floors looking for good ads soon as they came out cos 1st come 1st serve!

You hit the nail on the head. It sounds and seems archaic but it was the only form of communication outside of your circle back then...

One day the paper came out. Were all kicking back in my friends house with copy`s of the paper with a very cool ad in it that read and I only remember this cos of what happened after. Ad reads "1949 split window for sale, Please call after 5PM $800" One of the guys was calling and calling the number before that time. Left constant messages saying he wants it no matter what! He gets lucky and gets a return call to come look at it and starts doing cart wheels in the house amazed that he finally found a split. We take a drive to the sellers house witch was not far and open the garage door to a mess. The car was gone from the knees down. No pan just half the car missing everything. My friend looks at it shuts the garage door and walks back to the car all sad.. Man you had to be there..

You want to hear something crazy. I remember that ad. I was hypnotized by the 49 split after HotVws May 84 issue featured a brown 49 split. Shortly thereafter i did buy a split but it was one with an oval dash which didnt satisfy my desire for a true split. Thruout the years I always opened up The Recycler and went straight to the vintage auto section toward the end looking for that elusive 49 split dream. I made the phone calls for that $800 split and never got thru but I knew there was something wrong with it when the ad was printed the following week. What a small world... A couple of decades later in January 2006 HotVws came out with a cover of another brown split that will go down as my all-time favorite split surpassing my dream 49...

Ah the recycler. Got some good deals at 6:15 am!!

60 ghia vert $400 and the guy towed it to my house for free!

2 separate ads read:

62 ghia conv frame $200
62 ghia conv windshied frame $200

I got there and it was a complete car and a 60 to boot. Seats, glass, all wood and dash AND TITLE!! He was going to cut it up but I told him I would take it all. 15 mins later he was at my house with the ghia, title and 5 boxes of parts

57 oval $100

Ad read:

bug $100

I got there and an all original black with red interior bug with a carpet covering the rear window. As I got closer I could see the oval!! Missing the W decklid but complete with 4 tab, original aprons and a 40hp with a rod thru the case.

I miss those days!!
