Man what a deal!! for an early Ghia convertible.................My best recycler deal was a 1962 Bug Convertible all original, black plate with Cal pink slipl!! never molested but had a hole in the 40hp from a blown rod......Ad read "convertible bug not running" for 700obo....got it for 600.00 I didn't want to take "advantage of the seller & offer 500.00. The seller also had a 63 baja ragtop no engine that he said I could have for another 100.00!! Got that too, & ended up selling the baja 400.00.....Man!! Who would have thought 20 something years later we would be recounting those adventures. Here's one. I had a couple of different towbars for different types of cars. My older bro had no clue why we were so into VWs much less know there was a towbar specific for VDubs. One day I called him up if he could do me a favor and get my towbar from the shop and pickup a $100 65 bug from Venice. He took the wrong towbar and the 65 bug got loose and eventually ended up against the center divider of the SantaMonica Freeway. He could have killed me for sending him out on VW related stuff and I could have killed him for leaving the bug on the freeway. I actually was relieved that a disaster didnt ensue from the mishap but I never got to see my 65 as it was gone by the time I went looking for it..

Tow bar stories hu, In 89 there was an that read 60 Convertible baja $50 in Down Town L. A. Went to look at it. It was so badly cut I only wanted the tow bar attached to it The live bidding started and I got the tow bar for $25 and they threw in the Kab for free cos the bolts to the tow bar were rusted shut! The vert was later saved. _________________ CRG

Hey Kidd, speaking of CalStyle i was reading the feature on this beautifull green 62 single cab owned by Pomona California's Shad Otero. Check out "Cal style" in quotation marks. Must be the words of another OG
...but instead went "Cal Style" . _________________ Frank Ochoa said; "I still have my convertible bug from high school. Now that Gramps is out Im going to make some changes but Im still going to keep it Cal-Style, you know, all original but lowered with some alloys"

Chad, Yeah he lived in the Highland park, Eagle rock are, He lived 5 min from me.We grew up in the same place same time. I told his best friend Percy about this thread and to let Chad in on it as well. Chad`s father back in the day had an awesome early camper (Jersey looker) but the best part was the inside of it cos it had weed plants embroidered inside the whole bus. _________________ CRG

He must have been in the middle of the 80s desmadre because only an OG from the streets would know the term.

Now that I'm building a 55 Vert & a 57 Ragtop and back in the scene I was debating chrome plated alloys or polished alloys (old school) for my next Cal-Style build........all my VW's wheels back in the 80's were polished by the old man in El Monte but later in the late 80's early 90's my Porsche's had chrome plated alloys..........polishing is work to keep them up....CRG can confirm using mothers mag or blue magic in the tube and elbow grease to keep the Alloys, Empis & BRM's looking good.......Don't even get me started on the BRM's....the OC boys know what I'm talking about, after a couple of days the lip & spoke edge would get grey (OG Empi BRM's are made out of Magnesium) and I was constantly polishing the lips of my BRM's........Anyway like J8Bug mentioned early on this thread some of us VW heads transitioned to Porsche's. Check these early 90's pics of one of my "Cal-Style Porsche's (& daddy's girls) with chrome plated alloys and a 911 motor I just built to go in one of my other "open top" cabrio Porsches.

I have always been a big fan of polished Fuch`s. Chrome looks good also but has a whole different effect on the wheel when it`s polished. Early, late or cookie cutter wheels. BRM`s never made it to our part of the city back then and even now you never see them. _________________ CRG

Mine were ploished years ago by Alex Magro in Florida and they still shine like a muthaf&&&&A to this day. People always confuse them for chrome but as i get older I dont necessarily look forward to pulling the wheels and putting them on a stand and going to town with Wenol Ultra soft polish and finishing them off with some mothers billet polish but it is sure worth it when Im done. BRMs never made it into my hood either. We would run wide 5 replica alloys as a last resort. The chrome was cool also when I had my Porsche but towards the later stage before i sold it the chrome started to peel off the alloys.

Thats ^^ a beautifull targa kidd. I almost bought one identical to yours but in hardtop. It was a 77 911s with the carrera updates but it still had the 2.7. The knock on the 2.7 was that it would pull the headstuds when it got hot. So I ended buying a 78sc targa with the 3.0. All of this thruout the 90s after I had burned out on VWs with all the blown trannies and motor grief and I eventually sold my last bus that drove me over the brink in 1991. The 78 eventually got the carrera cabriolet treatment and a 3.2 which was a beautifull bulletproof motor even though I kept the CIS injection from the 3.0... Besides the timing chain tensioners I could never blow that 3.2 motor up no matter how hard I tried. The interior was flawless as I did many, many upgrades and added a high dollar Polk Audio stereo system because thruout the 90s I was single and in my prime if you know what I mean. And for those that will undoubtedly always say a car like that is for someone that is making up for having a small penis what if I was to say whats wrong with having a large penis and a Porsche. What are you going to say now???
Here's mine.....

LOL!! BRM's never made it to my neighborhood either!!!......remember I was an anomoly in LA with BRMs & a street racer first (Gene Berg influenced) and I believe the only one in Latino neighborhoods running OG BRM's (someone correct me if i'm wrong cause I never saw any one else) But there was a guy from South Gate that had a moroon traditional dechromed 67 with 1 piece windows OC Cal-Look that had BRM's and was affiliated with one of the OC VW clubs I remember......... I ran them because I was a serious street racer and they were light & rare and reading about Darrell Vittone's Inch Pincher when I first got into VW's inspired me too. _________________ 1955 151 Deluxe L219 Congo Green (Project)

I recently had the opportuntiy to ask someone that's been around the VW parts biz a very long time what the deal was with the other Vintage parts store that opened up in the mid-80s not far from the original one also on San Fernando rd. According to Ruben Velasco; the original owner of Vintage VW Parts split it and sold it leaving behind the original one now named KDF and the new one up the road called Vintage Parts. I was always curious. Early L.A. history none-the-less...

A very good friend of mine named Gary R.I.P. owned KDF Enterprises on S.F Road. You`ll also remember Jaime Lopez from the KDF shop now works with us at Koch`s VW. Jaime is still oldschool and has a lot of Bombs and a couple vw`s stashed away. Many good juicy stories came out of that place for sure!
Vintage parts was owned by a very cool person. Bob Scott, A very friendly person happy to talk vw`s anytime you walked into his store on Victory Blvd in Glendale Ca. Come pay day I was there! That place left the city on Glendale a while back. _________________ CRG

Looking at these ads & talking to Ruben V also jogged my memory of the original Vintage VW on San Fernando near the 134 splitting & changing to KDF Enterprises run by Jaime & then the Vintage Parts Inc. run by Bobs son on San Fernando closer to Burbank. It's pretty cool when you talk to OG's from the 80's all the pieces start coming together & you get the back stories too. _________________ 1955 151 Deluxe L219 Congo Green (Project)

There was also B.C.E. Bob Costa Enterprises in Eagle Rock Ca. If you lived in this area and had a VW you knew Bob.
He also passed away but his wife now runs the place still on Colorado Blvd. That is the place Jaime came from before he moved to the shop he`s at now. I remember walking in there telling Jaime to grab his car keys and bounce! LOL _________________ CRG

Im loving all this shit!!! I considered myself more of a party kid but I was definetely in the middle of the entire 80s cruising/partying FANDANGO driving my share of buckets no one will ever remember. So to hear the back stories is awesome and come the classic Ill share a few backstories that cant be shared on air. Everyone from that era has em. _________________ Frank Ochoa said; "I still have my convertible bug from high school. Now that Gramps is out Im going to make some changes but Im still going to keep it Cal-Style, you know, all original but lowered with some alloys"
Fred one of the original members of The Bus Boyz said; "We were the first to ever Cal-Style a Bus.. No one was doing it back then".

He also passed away but his wife now runs the place still on Colorado Blvd. That is the place Jaime came from before he moved to the shop he`s at now. I remember walking in there telling Jaime to grab his car keys and bounce! LOL |
B.C.E. has been around forever......If I remember correctly Bob Costa had a repair shop also besides the retail store on Colorado now. Bob's wife has hooked me up with some hard to find small stuff for my 55 Convertible recently and is a pleasure to deal with. _________________ 1955 151 Deluxe L219 Congo Green (Project)
