This last weekend I went to a toy drive cruising all the way up Whittier blvd to the vdub club "Vee Dub Veeda" It was a huge turnout with 160 VW's. It was pretty cool seeing the VW hobby alive and well at a Hamburger joint other than the one that just recently closed in OC.
It got me to thinking about how huge the VW scene in Los Angeles was in the 1980's and how our Vintage Cal-Style VW's were not given any love by the OC centric media back then and now with social media & the internet the VW world is just a "click" away and the many sides of a story can now be told. L.A.s Cal-Style story has been told by the guys that were there with this thread.

Give me a break, you are insulting every 80s V-dubber kid in L.A. that payed there dues, that constantly got harrased by the cops, that got there shit stolen, that did anything possible to be in that scene. Give me a break. The V-Dub world didnt revolve around the Orange County Callook alone... Just like there were hotrods there were lowriders. Just like there were callook there also cal-style. Time to correct history (IMO)

Alright Sambanista’s!! It’s been awhile since I dropped a Cal-Style story from back in the day L.A. and this one is a cool one.

So all through this thread it’s pretty apparent that there were two different major VW car cultures happening in SOCAL. The very popular at the time Orange County raced inspired dechromed High Performance “California Look” (well documented) and the L.A. lowrider, cruising influenced all original “slammed” Vintage “Cal-Style” VW.

I was very fortunate to be a part of both by working the VW retail stores as a teen and going to school in Bellflower at the time a predominantly White area, but growing up in a working class lower income area of SouthEast L.A. with my Raza.

I was in the thick of the LA party & cruise scene with my VW’s back then, but I was a High Performance and street racer, gear head first and that being the case I read and learned about the VW Air-Cooled High Performance Pioneers like Dean Lowry of DDS, Joe & Darrell Vittone of EMPI fame, and Gene Berg. That’s how I would learn about the rare EMPI Speedwell BRM wheels that Gene Berg would run on his Black 1967 Drag VW.
I took my High Performance cues from the Orange County racers I saw at the OCIR Bug-In ‘s because they were building and pioneering the fastest VW’s and with my lowrider influence growing up around the Dukes, Lifestyle, Imperials car clubs and mainly following my childhood homie Rene (youngest brother of the Duke’s Ruelas family) who combined the two and thus created the L.A. Cal-Style VW around 1980.

So for me at the height of the LA party & cruise scene around 1985-86 when everyone and their Mom was rolling polished Porsche Alloys, and the LA Cal-Style was starting to blow up outside of LA, I wanted to be different again, like those early years of 1979-1984 so I decided to find some original EMPI Speedwell BRM’s and roll them on a “slammed” all original Vintage Cal-Style VW (a 1967 to keep the Gene Berg theme) making me the only guy in LA at Stadium way & ELA Whittier Blvd to roll these rare Wheels. I bought them from the Manager of Car Custom and I think I paid around 1,100 dollars for them (Porsche alloys were going for 300-400 a set for comparison) but my 67 was “layed out” and had a harsh ride and I split one of the rare “brittle” magnesium BRM’s cruising Pacific Blvd in my H.P. cities cruise spot one day. Well a DKP member that lived in South Gate (a neighbor city to HP) named Hector Bonilla who I knew from seeing him cruise his very clean maroon dechromed Cal-Look VW just happen to be there when I broke that BRM wheel & even offered to help me.

(Thanks Hector if you are reading this).

So I went back to my 901 Fuchs and put my BRM’s away while I searched for a replacement. I placed an ad in Hot VW’s several years later trying to find a replacement and I was able to get a pair from a Racer from North Carolina and complete the set again. (on a side note I ended up trading Rich Kimball my broken BRM for NOS vert parts & rear mirror for one of my Cal-Style Verts and he made a clock out of it and displayed it at BFY).

So DKP Hector must have got wind that a had a full set again and wanted to see if I would trade my BRM’s for his original 5 Spoke Empis (sorry Hector I already had 5 fully polished original 5 spoke Empis that I would change up on my Cal-Style VW’s) and left me this card that I recently found in my storage.

I did end up selling those 5 original EMPI Speedwell BRM’s to another well known DKK Cal-looker guy by the name of Bill Schwimmer and they probably went on his famous DKK car back then. So that was a little story of how the OC & LA VW worlds crossed paths back then.

For sure homeboy, let's meet up in Vegas and visit Carlos. You bringing any of your rides to Classic this year? We are planning another LA nostalgic cruise before the Classic weekend so "out of towner's" can experience cruising Downtown LA at night and the other back in the day LA cruise spots.

Another cool story from back in the pioneer years of the LA Cal-Style.
So yesterday I was at the Pomona Swap meet and I was talking to many new VW friends about my UK trip so when I guy came up to me and said "hey VW KIDD" I thought it was another VW guy just wanting to meet me and talk, but then he started laughing and I recognized it was a homie Eddie A. from "back in the day" H.P. that was friends with my now wife at H.P. high school back then. So Eddie had a 62 Ragtop that he bought off of another friend from H.P. named David who was in the "Baby Boyz" VW C.C. from H.P. David was the guy who I first saw lower a VW up close when he lowered the front end of my first 66 VW in 1981 and then I would figure out how to do it myself and go on to"slam" it to the extreme shortly after and thus becoming the "go to guy" to slam a VW in the South East LA area back then. So Eddie walked me over to his 62 Ragtop that hasn't seen the light of day since the 80's and brought it out for his now teenage son to enjoy. This 62 ragtop is exactly the way it was back then, Vert decklid, pop outs except when David had it it was slammed to the floor on smoothies around 1983 and David would lift it back up to stock around 1985-86 and then selling it to Eddie A. who drove all over the LA party and cruise scene as his cruiser ride parking it in the late 80's due to a blown engine. Here is a pic of it today after a new engine and driving it to Pomona for the first time.

Oldeskool65 thanks for the love of our early LA Vdub stories.

Us LA 80's VW Kids are sharing the rich history with first hand accounts, actual pictures and facts of our LA VW scene for the masses but mainly for guys like you from our same neighborhoods but at different times, can be proud of a lowrider influenced style that is worldwide today and the most popular way to fix up a Vintage VW........all original with chrome, slammed on Polished Porsche alloys going back to 1979 with the pioneer clubs The Vintage Volkster's & The Bugs Buddies.........The Cal-Style VW !! (NOT "resto-cal" a media outsider term coined in 1988 to describe a Cal-Style VW)

Great stuff. I got huge respect for what you guys did and this style. I love the look of basically stock rides just slammed with accessories. And better yet for me to be from the same area all this started in.
I remember reading CRGs stories from the GFK thread and the amaze me. Cool

I used to roll with the VW Clan from el sereno, which started up in the 80's. Wish I remeber the names of the members who were original memebers from the 80's. Ray Mercain was one of the originals I beleive, he got me in the club taught me eveything about vws mechanically and showed me a lot of the old school spots and meet a lot of cool people. He took me down to vintage vw, Bob Costas, a&s performance, komet.
There was some brothers on bonnie beach and hazard I beleive they were into old school toyotas and vws. Frank was one of them an he taught me to build engines and owned a vw shop out in Alhambra. I dont remeber his shops name but thanks to those two guys who taught me so much and thats why after seeing my friends "leave" the scene and move to other stuff I still love vws just the same as when I first got into them back in when I was 13 or 14.

Me growing up in East LA, playing flag football and baseball as a kid at evergreen park there was always vws parked at a house across the street, and I remember always hearing them rev up there motors as we were playing. Turns out it was a member of Volksstyle car club. Also my grandparents lived in city terrace off Atwood st and there was some guys who always had a stash of vws in there garage down the street, and they were friends of my uncles. My grandpa had a 68 bus back in the late 80s and someone stole his vw emblem on the front of his bus and I remember he blamed them! Lol...RIP grandpa!

Your grandpa was probably right. There was also so many other kids into the craze that it couldve been anybody, even somebody to hang that emblem like a medallion off a turkish rope, LOL! I have a notchback that will be a tribute to 80s kids in L.A and it will be logo'd by Danny A. and called "Rap-Sheet" for a reason,lol.... BTW Who is the guy from VolksStyle??? I know you have posted from day one that you got bit pretty hard to what sounds like an obsession also and those memories are still with you from across Evergreen Pk in Boyle Hts. I try to include everyone from day 1 and bring them into the fold so we can grow this movement and we uncover more history in the process. I reach out even to the younger generations like yourself because we find out how a kid in the IE gets down and it turns out his obsession started in ELA in the 80s.

Vic and J8bug that Vato from VolksStyle is Rudy Ramirez he was one of the original founding members back in the late 70's or early 80's. I still talk to him once in a while if I see him cruising his tow in the Rose Hill Projects. His nephew that lives in East Side 18 still has his 58 bug with a logo'd back window rotting away in a rat infested garage. BTW Rude Rudy is my Primo and I always remember rolling by Sierra Park School bumping some Roger and Zapp. Rudy was my true inspiration from always keeping my rides clean and stylish.

Thats ^^ some pretty good info Danny. Its amazing how we can communicate and solve things at lightning fast speed nowadays. Chk this out, jonny1309 posted this sighting on another thread and in 1 hr after posting it on "80s L.A." FB, thanks to Salinas we found out who owns it. An Eddie who owns a body shop out of El Sereno. Ima try and get him to one of our cruises coming up..

Damn, I dug this waay back. I recognize that bug. It was always at Eddie and Steves shop in El Sereno when Eddie was painting my '65. Years later I met Vic who I was going to trade my bug for his homies vert.

I heard a lot of stuff about Volkstyle but then again I heard a lot from the vw clan but never seen any wrong doing myself.

Vic I dont know when you left east los but I dont know if you knew or anyone else here knew my homie Sammy who went to Garfield in the 80's he was from Germanys Finest (I beleive) He rolled in a pink and white turbo'd notchback everywhere. He was cousins with Cheech who had a lifted or bagged yellow and white 21 and a rhd vert.

This recent pic unearthed from Rene Ruelas will lay to rest doubt if any, where and when the Latino Vintage Cal-Style originated!! This Bugs Buddies Original Outlaws all original Karmann Ghia was slammed on smoothies with original polished beauty rings in 1979!!! And it was not inspiring to be a dechromed OC influenced Cal-Look VW. This ghia would shortly after have "heart" 901 polished Fuchs "layed-out" just as you see it!!

Here is a DVD video of an interview Rene R. did for a TV Show around the mid 1990's talking about why back in the day he chose a VW to build his "style" Volkswagen (the origins of the Vintage OG Cal-Style VW) instead of lowriders like his older DUKES C.C. brothers.
