I drove it to the NorCal Treffen V.W. and Porsche meet and It ran well there and back, I hope I solved the fuel pump issue but only more fault-free miles will tell.
Lots of nice shiny cars at the meet, which made my rig look a bit unfinished, which it is, I have lots of work to do before I get to the body and paint.
I have done prep and paint to a car before so I can appreciate how much time and money some people have into their rides. The double cab will only be brought up to work truck level of finish after all the modifications are complete as it will be in flogged daily.
Thanks to all who came by and checked out the D.C., it was nice to see the positive reactions to the double cab.
I am planning to go to Busfest next weekend if the family and fuel pump allows. _________________ Porsche powered mid-engine double cab build

Still driving daily, went to Busfest 9, ran well there and back, around 130 miles or so. I am thinking the fuel pump issue is solved, as I blew out the dead new pump and it works, so it appears to be a filter issue. Canton Racing filter strikes again. Now that I pulled the Canton off and replaced it with a Mahle filter should be smooth motoring.
I mounted the Recaro srd seats so I can install the Shroth 4 point harness in the front.

Thanks BDubVdub, the seats are feeling more comfortable after using them every day, they are a bit of a shock when you first sit in them as they really surround you compared to even the 944 buckets that they replaced. I now feel that the seats in other cars are strange. I wanted the Recaros from the beginning of the build so I could run a four point harness, and finally installed my Schroth rally cross belts.

I have contacted volkdent and am going to check out his mid-engine bug build which I have been following on the Germanlook forum, a very smooth blend of old VW and modern Porsche performance.
Slowly working on refining the D.C. as I seem to have solved all the major issues by replacing the Canton Racing filters which were tasked to protect but ending up being the destroyers.
The D.C. is running o.k. on the "crap shoot" engine though it still has the knock it had from the start after adjusting the valves, not sure of it's long term viability so I need to get to rebuilding the "glitter engine".
Got to work on the front and rear bumpers, still much to do as I will sand blast them and do some body work and finally paint them.

Took the d.c. to a autox practice day at Sears point (Sonoma raceway) to get a baseline suspension tune before I start refining it.
The truck ran well and put up with my flogging without complaint.
I went in thinking I need more front spring rate to get closer to the rear which is set-up to carry up to 1500#. It plowed like a tractor.
I did a bunch of runs on the short and long course then a figure-eight skid pad run to test grip and balance.
This was a low speed run on the main track, I am not leading this pack of cars into the turn at 110mph.
A brave passenger who wanted to feel what Chevy Caprice handles like

Thanks nyone4, glad you like it.
I had two passengers jump in for a run, both young guys that were driving a type 4 powered bug.
I think they were amazed that something could make so much noise and smoke and yet go so slow.
I also think one guy was a bit surprised when his door flew open in the middle of the run, but my new four point harness kept him in while he pulled it closed. My driver door also flew open on one of my runs and when one of the race staff mentioned it I said I was just checking to see if I hit a cone.
I think I need to get my front roll cage built to stiffen things up.
They both really liked the double cab regardless of my whining about the understeer issues during the run. _________________ Porsche powered mid-engine double cab build

No one has mentioned the fact that some of Seth's pics did not show. Only multi iterations of "click picture to re-size".
Enough criticism, love the build and the work that both of you have done. |

Here is a shaky video from my first autox test day, I still need to change my spring rates and go to another test day to dial out the understeer.

Hey EverettB, I think I am still a four legged truck, until I up my spring rates. My calculated guess is around #260 effective rate on the front and #285 on the rear. I am running torsion springs and coil-overs on both ends so it gets complicated, and my front torsion rate is pure guess, narrowed ball joint beam using bay torsion springs. Rear 944s2 torsions (#126) and #400 lbs coil springs on 1.5 ratio rockers.
I am going to up the rear spring to a #550 and give it a try, back springs are on the bump stops with #1200 of concrete in the back, short of my #1500 goal. More tuning on the fly. _________________ Porsche powered mid-engine double cab build

Also, thanks for checking out my thread and the super cool site E.B.
Hey J.pickens, that would have been hilarious, door flying open, me flashing the peace sign and so on. This video I just found as I was looking back to find clues for suspension adjustment. I was not convinced it was postable, but it is all I have from my first session, and I looked back at my thread and promised some video action, so here it is belated and dodgy, as is most of my efforts! _________________ Porsche powered mid-engine double cab build

I finally ordered some springs to start tuning the suspension. I went with #550 rear springs to replace the #400 that the shocks came with. I am trying to counter the heavy understeer I had at my first autocross test session. My gut feeling before the test was my front spring rate was too stiff compared to the rear but understeer is a symptom of the opposite (with other causes) so I went with upping the rear rate. I also designed in a #1500 payload capacity which I fell short of as repeated loads of concrete bags showed the truck to be happy with only #1200, just off the built in bump stops on the coil-overs.
The new spring rate calc's out at about #300 effective wheel rate.
It felt fine driving, not too stiff, and I went on a dump run, but I only scaled out to #900 of load, a big load but not heavy.
Need to sign-up for the next autocross test day to see if I am going in the right direction. _________________ Porsche powered mid-engine double cab build

Thanks Matt K. Seth from Twisted Minis is responsible for most of the fabbing and all of the welding. He has closed his shop but I hope he returns and does some more work on the d.c.
Hey Bashr52, The dice-roll engine is still running, has a few clicks and clacks that are a bit worrying, but I hope it will stay strong till I tear down the "glitter engine" and find the time and money to put it back in long-term service, (built up for future boost) _________________ Porsche powered mid-engine double cab build
