Hey Samba members, I have a 68 VW vert. I am removing the engine tto replace the re-main seals to include some other things. What I need help with is I'm cleaning up the tin and I'm not sure as to whether to keep it black or paint it another color. My bug is red. I went through severa Hot VW mags. to try and get some ideas but nothing pops out. I was thinging of painting the tin red to match the car or mayby blue. I want to stay away from chrome. If I do red or blue, I could accent it with some enigine pieces that have have these colors. What do you think, or should I just stay with black? Any pictures of some menmbers engines would be great!

My bug is blue center front to back, white sides and red fenders. I did all my tin red with chrome trim pieces. Looking good. Will post pics when it is done.

I have seen several painted red to match their cars. Looks great if your are not trying to keep that stock look. Prepair the tins good so the paint won't start peeling. Sand good and then wipe down with alcohol be fore painting.

Never heard of using alcohol prior to priming and painting. As I understand, it's acetone (aka nail polish remover), which I've always done.

Acetone is expensive Confused Go to a beauty supply store and buy it by the gallon.

Just get some "wax and grease" remover that is made for wiping off metal before prepping for paint.

You can find a quart size in just about every regular chain auto parts store on the paint aisle for under 8 bucks.

I have always just used reducer as it does not leave any kind of film. Sure its a little spendy (like $30 for a gallon here) but it works well and is what is supposed to be used prior to painting. If you are in a pinch you can use brake parts cleaner in an aerosol can as it isnt supposed to use a residue either. I have used it and it works, just make sure it evaporates before spraying any paint over it.

I sand-blast the part and give it a wipe with some steel wool. Then some brake-cleaner, followed by compressed air. Last I go over the area with a propane torch to drive off any moisture that might have made it through my compressed air system.

Then paint.

All paint suppliers offer a product to prepare the surface after sanding and preping. I is designed to remove any oils from you hands and any other foreign materials. I used to use Tec 3 from NAPA. I believe it was from Martin Senior.

Unless you're showing it, I vote satin black.

The upside of colored tin is the ability to spot leaks quickly. Then again, satin black isn't much harder.

It is fun to do your tin up though. My old bus (a red '69 Kombi) had a gray fan-shroud, black lower tin, red pulleys, chrome coil-cover and air-cleaners, see-through cap, etc... It looked great at first. Clean, conrasting, obviously much faster (ha!), and then... The inevitable miles began, as did the leaks, and eventually it looked like what it was--a goofy painted stock 1600 with some cheap EMPI parts and a leaky oil-cooler.

But don' let that stop you. My Jamaican buddy has rastafarian tin with a crazy Selassie mural on his doghouse, and he keeps it shiny clean and loves it.

As always, your car, your bag, yeah?

Maybe paint your tarboard or whatever you have red to match the car, then engine tin black. Accent red in areas such as dist cap, generator pulley, degree pulley, maybe the plug wires even?

You could get a red serpentine belt pulley system; that way you would have a degree pulley that's not chrome:

I would just go with red/black scheme. But it's your car. Post pics of how it turns out either way!

Cool

Thanks again for everyones imput! I'm really caught between keeping it as original as possible or spicing it up a little with some accent. The more I think about it and reading all the comments, I think I will stay with the basic black and accent with some red. I like the idea of painting the tarboard red...not sure if I need a special pait but something I can look into too. I just bought a new one to replace the old when I pull the engine.

Black is supposed to help shed heat. More effective than chrome or other colors.

I'll cast my vote for matte or semi gloss black. Easier to maintain. The color looks great IF you can color match it to the car exactly and you can keep it spotless. I have seen some really cool stuff stenciled on the fan housing though.
