Sadly the 2.0l type 4 engine w/ progessive carb in my '79 Westy is dying. It needs a complete rebuild, new heads and all which isn't in the budget at the moment. I've found what appears to be a running 1.8l type 4 engine also with a progressive carb on it.

My question is, would I be able to just swap the 1.8l for the 2.0l until I can get the 2.0l back to health? What might I need change or add to put a 1.8l type 4 w/ progessive carb in my '79 Westy that had a 2.0l type w/ progressive carb on it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

the flywheel/clutch assembly as the 2.L should be a 228mm unit vs a 215mm unit on the 1.8L. Check out the pressure plates.
Does the 1.8L have heat exchangers? The 75 to 78 were a different style from the 79's which were like the 72-74 ones except the square ports.

If you can bolt the entire engine in you should be close to good to go. The 215 flywheel and clutch from the 1800 should work with the 2.0 bellhousing and starter (it's the other way that won't work). The 79 has different exhaust ports from earlier engine so if you stick with the earlier exhaust you should be okay.

yeah if its complete it will bolt in fine, only possible hickup is the flywheel, and if that is the case you just need to switch them between engines and check your endplay.

Thanks for the info everyone. The 1.8l engine is complete with exhaust so there shouldn't be an issue there. Sounds like if there is an issue with the flywheel I can just swap the flywheel off of the 2.0l for the 1.8l. Is that correct?

Yep, but it shouldn't be an issue. The ring gears are the same, so the original 2.0 starter should work with the earlier flywheel. No big deal to swap if you want to go that route though, not really any extra work, as you should pull the flywheel and replace the seal and pilot bearing no matter what.

Instead of starting a new topic I decided to ask my question here. I have a 79 westy 2.0 with bad motor and 091 tranny, I have opportunity to buy a "rebuilt" 1800. My question is can use the 1800 clutch and flywheel? Will it just bolt in? I know this has been answered but in searching the topic I am getting conflicting info . The reason I do not want to swap flywheels is this one on the 1800 has been balanced, and I'm not to sure about setting end play. Also can I run the distibutor from my 2.0 on the 1800? It is an svda, and I will be keeping my FI. Thanks for any help.

There is no problem with swapping the earlier 1800 T4 engine into a later rig with the 091 tranny. I think you have to change the bottom two engine mounting studs and maybe need to do a few other minor things. If your 1800 is from a '74 you may have to drill and tap a hole for the TSII sensor and block off the air injection ports if that has not already been done. You will need to stay with the starter that matches the 091.

The distributor will interchange just fine assuming both distributor drives were installed as per the book. If not you will may have to reset the drive.
