Yes. Eventually. Also fenders, trans mounts I figure I'm going to have to readjust my ride height soon, so I plan on removing the arms again before spring, redoing the ride height and painting at the time. They are primer white right now.

Whew... tired already. I got a bunch done today (Saturday) and am looking forward to another good work day tomorrow. I work much better under pressure, so I placed this deadline upon myself.
Then I can work on the day projects to get it prettied up. Pictures will be slim until I get done, no time for documentation. _________________ My Build Page |

Well... I got quite a bit accomplished. The deadline worked to get my butt in gear. Lots of paint, motor ready to go in.
I'll try to get some pictures on here later. I'm on the iPod right now.
Got stumped by the trailing arm again. Maybe I was too tired when I measured it up last time, or maybe I just didn't realize how close I'd be cutting my CV angles. I'll need to go to a slight positive camber like the other arm.
So... as soon as I found that out I left the garage and haven't returned yet. Taking a few days off.
Still plan on running again in two weeks.
Pics. tonight if I don't get called in to work again. _________________ My Build Page |

Well... got the trailing arm fixed up and mostly welded. I'm going ot do some more reinforcing. Very excited to get that out of the way. Need some more welding wire, but now I'm off to put some trans fluid in.
Also ordered a new clutch disc. That six puck kennedy disk, I'm thinking, is why I've been having chattering issues. _________________ My Build Page |

Well... I'm getting close to buttoning up the rear end. I still need to find or build some high fenders. This is 13" under the rear skid plate, plenty of droop left.
It should sit perfect front to back once I get the bigger tires on there.
Still need to bleed the brakes, install the starter, and hook up the shifter.
I will need to readjust the torsions at some point, but thought I'd give them a beating first.
The spring rate seems just perfect where it was way too stiff before, but I'll have to do some testing to make sure. The ride will definitely be less harsh, anyway.

Took it for a drive today! Very happy to be back in the saddle, for now.
I need to figure out the alignment, it's still way toe-ed in. I'm debating on redoing the other trailing arm, but we'll see how close I can get.
But the really good news. That transmission is as tight as a $#%5 $% $%#$ #$%#$%. Much better than my sloppy second hand trans I had.
And I now have a forth gear!! Once I get the 32" tires mounted and figure out my alignment, it should cruise very nicely at 55.

Nice to see you driving it again Tim! I really like the blue colors you used during the build. What type of wheels are those? Those are sharp! _________________ I DID wash my hands....the rest is 'built-in' dirt!

Well, I've been neglecting my Samba friends. Here is an update on the craziness.
I'm mostly back together and running. Still need to figure out some high mounted fenders in the rear, but am happy to be driving it again. Heat and windshield wipers are the main projects now.
edit--> I also put the 32" tires on there. It cruises really nice at 55mph @ 2600rpm. 65mph is a little loud (3100rpm). But there is still plenty of low end torque to handle the 32's at slow speeds.
The new clutch disc has made a world of difference in drivability. Very user friendly now.
I like the whole roadster look. Low, long, wide, fast. Exhaust is still unruley, but with careful driving I can keep from echoing through town. I'll work on painting the wheels, fenders, and little trim pieces as energy allows.
I hope to park my 12.5mpg truck and drive this through the summer, and if all goes well, have the ammenities ready for winter driving. I filled it up the other day after about 100 miles... $10.?? (still need to fix the speedo/odo cable and fuel guage)
Here are some pictures of how it stands now. It has about 13" under the rear skid plate and about 14.5" under the pan. There is still room to go up on both the front adjusters and the rear torsions. 16" will be about my goal.
Also did a weight check at the local certified scales...
750lb. (37%) front
1260lb. (63%) rear
______
2010lb. gross
I still have some cage work that should be done, plus add in tools, spare tire, etc. And front bumper... almost forgot about that.
That's all for now. _________________ My Build Page |

She looks great, Tim! The longer rear arms really did wonders for the stance. And I hear ya on parking the truck for the summer...my rail will see a ton of street use this year for the same reason! _________________ I DID wash my hands....the rest is 'built-in' dirt!

Haha, I just read the entire 23 page build and must say this has been an excellent read. I am very impressed with your ability to adapt to time/budget constraints and still get that rig done. Great job buddy! Oh, and need more youtube videos! |

Thanks. I keep thinking I should have spent the time to get another degree and then just buy a better bug, but my daughter's first ride in it was worth all the time we spent together. She's very proud of "her" work. _________________ My Build Page |

Maybe my silence is speaking to you?
I've been driving. Yes, believe it or not. I've been driving to work, taking my kids to school, running errands, and even joyriding. It handles great for the street. Haven't managed to get off road yet, the local trails are closed until May 15th. I still have work to do on the fenders and tree bars and exhaust, but it's the kind of work I can finish and be back to driving in a day or two.
I even found out that the earth is round , go figure. I went on a short interstate trip (50 miles). Averaged 30mpg at 75mph. I laugh every time I go to the gas station. Quite litterally, I sit there with a shit eatin grin on my face . With windshield wipers and heat, it is much more enjoyable.
My truck is on empty, I don't think I'd even make it to the gas station without running out of gas, and I don't plan on filling it up anytime soon. No more (!) baby steps.... 25 cent to the stop sign, 50 cents, then turn right, $1.75 then put it in neutral to try to gain 0.3mpg. No more.
I even had to scrape frost off my window for the first time. I'm happy it's a small window.
Still got work to do, but all in due time.
Thanks for the comment. _________________ My Build Page |
