Time for an update?? It's been a while.

For those googling upon this mess, I thought I'd report my trails.

I gave it hell this summer. Getting more and more daring with every trip. The 2x3's are super smooth. Slightly undersprung, but very functional. The bilsteins are a dream, but the rear shocks heat up with extended beatings and fade significantly. Time to double up.

The front setup is pretty good. A little stiff, but will handle anything I throw at it. My plan is to try to soften up the front a little this winter - either longer arms or more travel and less spring.

I've only had one "breakdown", and that was one of the 30 amp fuses in the back harness that fell out. Quick fix. Engine has been VERY reliable, even in the sub freezing. I changed the air filter once, blew it out another time, checked the oil once. I did replace the water pump because it was seeping, and I replaced the main seal while I was at it.

It's been a hoot. And I get 30+ MPG!!! The commute can get a little rough, at times, but only after a rain storm.

Ta Daa! Thanks. I just got finished putting a few decorations on and fixing everything I broke last weekend. I've officially parked my truck for the season and am back to "roughing it" in the bug.

You probably caught me on the way to the courthouse. I usually keep odd hours and can skirt the city without actually going in. I got a mud flap ticket a few months back, so I've been trying to avoid populated areas until I can find a way to make mud flaps look good. Confused

Thanks for the compliments. I think I might have overdone the stickering, but I hope it grows on me.

Quick question: are you still using the harbor freight welder?
If so, how many amps is it?
Thanks, and the car is looking awesome!

The whole green bug is built with the 90 amp harbor freight welder. If you decide to go this route, I can give you some pointers. Penetration is key, and with so little power you need to use technique to penetrate.

I now own a millermatic (edit-->) 211 and I can say without question that the experiences with the harbor freight welder were worth the $88 dollars I paid for it, but the new welder is so much better.

If you want to get into welding, and have some common sense and desire to learn the science of welding, the harbor freight will open your eyes to how handy it is to weld stuff, and when it breaks in two years, go get a lifetime (brand name) welder.

Feel free to ask more questions... The bug is still running strong and has been my daily driver for some time now.

No action on here for a while, whats going on bro? I have a friend offering me a ej22 for $300 or some work and im tempted. I thought of your build as soon as i started considering it. I want to since i can work for it, but the work and car is about 1.5 hrs away (gas) and i got to pull it, and money is pretty tight right now. I got bigger priorities then the bug. But the motor is getting tired on the other hand. So idk.

Thanks for remembering... I've been active, but not so much on this bug. I got a little addicted to speed, so I took a detour...

Then the forest fire came, that took a few months to recover from.

As far as the bug... I've just been driving. I did drive it all winter long, even in negative F temps. It starts up every morning and evening. Gets about 28-30mpg.

And I got around to building those tree bars I've always wanted... Got some new tires on the back, too.

I've got big plans for the front end and am gathering parts slowly.

Thanks, plotch. Most of "what's happening" is shifting gears. Laughing

My goals comming in were to build a "fuel-efficient off-road-capable sport-cruiser", and I made this video yesterday to show how well that goal was accomplished. It's hard to put into words, but I think it's mission accomplished... and still cheaper than a side-by-side.

How bout next Sunday? I'm free, I think. Trails around here are drying out.

I do want to go to "lake channel" someday. Is that something you can drive your bug to? I know I could.

Let me know if you need my number.

Cracked me up when you stopped to clean the windshield. All the work that you have done and still haven't fixed the wipers. Here they need to work for inspection. Sorry but kind of funny after reading the whole thread, seeing what you found unnecessary.

Haha, wipers worked for two years, then just quit one day. Our rainy season is almost over so it's not a huge deal.

Inspection? What's that? Jk.

Thanks for the comment.

Bump

I had the pleasure of going for a short off road ride last month with Tim. His car really works well. I'm looking forward to the next time I can ride with a group of bajas and rails.
