I think the color on the dash and the door tops should match the interior - maroon red. A jade green car with red interior sounds like a fabulous combo! Can only be beaten by Aquamarine (the non-metallic version) car with red interior.

I've seen a 356 -56 in jade green - and it's absolutely fantastic.

Here's a '55 JGM I took some pics of a few years back.

Well I am gonna fax off my info for the c.o.a. Tomorrow.
I am thinking of flipping a coin. I did a little poking around and it looks like the seats still have the old material under them. I pulled a seam back on the headliner, and it's there. Do I trash my decent looking interior in hopes that the original stuff is in fair shape? I am just so curious!

This isn't particularly helpful regarding the Pre-As, but it does mention that some cars have the paint tag, but no number, speculating that the car might have had a custom color:

http://porsche356registry.org/resources/tech-artic...tions.html

Prior to '55 they typically only had the chassis number tag.

I received a phonecall from Porsche of America today. I was told that they had no info on my car color, interior color, or trans. number.
They were gonna refund my payment because no useful info was found.
Bummer!

That's a shame. They can confirm the chassis number and engine number though, correct? The COA might still be worth getting, even without the details.

My engine is original to the car, so I wasn't interested in the coa.
Back to my detective work to figure out the color of the car!

I bought a stack of photos from an 'estate liquidator' to get shots of 356s when new, thus these 2 out of many of a Continental. The majority of pictures were of WW2 aircraft, as the photographer was an airman who first bombed Germany and then returned 10 years later to buy a Porsche. An interesting juxtaposition.

Wow, I would love to have that car.

Beautiful!
I see I should have clear blinker housings, not the orange ones from Napa Autoparts that I have!
I am also missing the 1500 badge.

Well, after some back and forth debate in my head, I'm am leaning in the direction of getting my car restored. Not a 100 point, but a great job the car deserves. Anyone have any input on shops in the Seattle, maybe Washington state area. I really do not want to ship my car across country. Is 25k a realistic budget for a little rust repair and paint. i know the little things add up. replating chrome, rubber....all the little things. Mechanical is 95% great. That part I can handle.

You need to meet Denny Akers. He's semi-retired now, but he is the 356 authority in the NW. Great guy too!

I just read through this thread. You made a very good find there.
Noticed early on you were asking about the "hand throttle"
With the Pre A there isn't a hand throttle,..there is a choke,..which really isn't a choke either, it's a "fuel enrichment circuit" which is, on a 55, actuated on the left hand PBJ carb only. The right hand one has the mechanism, and lever, but it's wired in the shut position. The knob on the dash pulls a cable which goes through the trans tunnell all the way back and through the fan housing and then makes a U turn to the left carb. The system didn't work very well so most people just eliminated it when the cable, or (more commonly) the pot metal arm on the carb mechanism broke. Original pull cable mechanisms are exceedingly rare, I have only ever seen two cables for sale. Unbroken carb mechanisms are rare as well, there are some around, but not in great numbers. This system was eliminated in 56 with the A model. The carbs changed fom PBJ to the very similar PCIB and the "choke" cover was replaced by a steel blank plate.

The "choke" is still there. The cable was unfortunately cut after it it came out of the rear of the car. At some point I would like figure out a way to make it all work properly. I found a place that came highly recommended..Rillos Restorations. I'm gonna drive up next week and get a quote for some rust repair and paint. Kinda excited!

You've got great luck if the choke pull mechanism is still in the dash. The cable and the wire inside it can be fairly easily replaced. You can get extra long cable and wire at marine stores as boats use really long cables. The screw in the pull shaft is peened to secure it. You have to drill out the punched dimple, then it unscrews.

I luckly still have the important parts for the choke. I found out that my car was silver metallic. I truely believe this color is org. to the dash and window sills. There are still the "chalk" marks on the back of the dash from the factory.
What color do you think it is?
