i took off my air cleaner today, and after breaking the lightly burned rubber, i proceeded to take it out of the car and tilted it when thick oily nasty smelling grey goop spilled over the ground. thank god i was outside it is nasty. what the hell is it? why was it in the cleaner? i have a fi 72 that had a small engine fire

It is an oil bath air cleaner.
There is supposed to be oil in it up to a certain line.
It is supposed to be cleaned each time you change oil.
Sounds like yours has not been cleaned in a long time.

Might also get grey goo (or whitish creamy goo) from a poorly ventilated crankcase breather.

ya has not been changed. so do i need to change the air filter or does the oil keep it from needing to be changed

and how much oil do you put in it?

Just what I was looking for. Thank you! Not being familiar with oil bath air filters I wasn't sure if it had to be changed when the oil and oil filter was changed. I love where it says to clean it with a wood chip. Wink
