I know that most of my VW matches (purchased locally, 3 owners, original manual and purchase papers etc.) but I've been starting to dig a little deeper.
I have engine 2447594 and body 2117358. The tech archives show the engine was produced two months before the body in late '58. I think it's unlikely, but possible that the engine sat around for a month and then was installed - match made in heaven.
Okay, I know I'm using you as human interchange manuals and that I ought pony up the $35 and get the birth certificate, but I do already know 95% of what the factory papers are going to tell me.
So, what do you think? Plausible or out of the question? |

I do not think that would be out of the ordinary to ahve an engine assembled before the car. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

I also have an engine in my 66 that's two months older than the chassis... the problem is it's not the original since I installed it to replace a burned out H case.
The only way you're going to know is to get a birth certificate and specifically ask the factory to confirm the engine number you give them matches the chassis. Be sure to do it this way, under German law they can not give you the number, they can only confirm a match between two numbers you supply. _________________ Rebuilt to drive not decorate. -VOLKSWAGNUT
