I think it's important that the people that are giving their review write what kind of Alternator they have, they look the same but are obviously different. I'm no expert, but isn't there a difference between 12v vs 6v shroud?
I have a 12v shroud and my alternator is a rareelectrical.com denso 60amp.
The bracket that I have, the large bracket, the bend looks to be a little of, it is crooked, or my shroud is to fat.
If you go couple of page back, supersuck did some braket notching to the large braket, I did not have to? I did a little bit of grinding on the shroud under the large braket, like supersuck did.
With my alternator, it doesnt fit like eatacactus way. The pulley placement seems to be different.
To properly fit I will lower the hole on the large braket, to lower the alternator, and also put a elicoil in the hole on the alternator that doesn't have tread because theres is no space for a bolt fit properly with out scratching the paint I'll try to work on this saturday. _________________ 68 Perugruen Notchback |

So nobody reported back that they got a second set of brackets they didn't pay for with the first shipment?
I had my alternator out for testing this week so i figured i would install the new brackets. I had to use my Binford hole stretcher to get my Geo alternator to fit.
The holes are stretched to get a little more width from the big bracket side. And the alternator mount hole moved down and out as well.
All in all a pretty simple install compared to the shimming/strap you had to do with the DDB style install.
When they tested the alternator i got these results:
Max output 56amp
Turn on speed 100 rpm
Output @2000rpm 28amp
Output @5000rpm 55amp
From the performance curve it looks to be about 42 amps at 3000rpm.
I'll take some more pictures of them installed later. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

I like all the nice brackets. I bought my wife a square at the end of last year and started looking into the conversion. Not many inexpensive choices out there. As luck would have it the generator took a sh** so I was forced to make a move pretty quick. So I found a Geo metro at the pull a part and took off the alternator. I also took both mounting brackets. When I got home I realized that the double ear mounting bracket would work perfectly. I set up everything and redrilled the bottom hole on the the double ear bracket where i needed it to be and I was good to go. Trimmed the engine tin slightly. An alternator shop had the pulley.Long story short $35 and 2 hours of my time and everything works perfectly
Out with the old!!
This is just an alternative. The kits out there are very nice. If you don't want to trim your shroud or have a show car this may not be for you. This is my wife's car for her photography business so she didn't mind she just wanted to get back on the road

I am using the Denso 70 amp. I had the same issue with the large bracket being cocked at an angle. The problem is the bend radius is way too big. This causes the bracket to pull to the side when bolted down. This large radius also allows the bracket. to flex way too much. I also think the metal is way too thin. I ended up making my own bracket from angle iron and modified an old bracket for the adjustment side. I also had to lower the mounting hole on the mounting bracket as it was way too high. No photos yet as I am back in the hospital.
Has anyone used the 11thhour brackets using the alternator that they recommended?
Paul

Sorry I missed the first batch. I'm in on the next round. I'm also very interested in the possibility of higher amp alternators working with these awesome brackets. |

Finally got around to getting my Geo alternator mounted in my engine bay. Hand made the brackets. Still have to finish up the wiring. Can't wait to see how this thing does. There's a few more pics in my gallery if you'd like to check them out _________________ 69 Squareback

Would you mind posting the part number on the alternator sticker and the belt you used? Also maybe a few more pics of your design? _________________ 69 Fastback Build

Ok, so I found that the bracket in this configuration was to flexible and gave alot of vibration.... (belt appered to be running true)
I welded in a gusset as mentioned here
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4...;start=220
This subdued the vibration a little but I found that with the belt cover on the vibration subsided to acceptable levels. I have been running the alt for a week now with no issues and loving the 14.5V charging rate.
Please note that Im using the alt with the incorrect B+ pin forcing the alt to be mounted 180deg opposite to the intended design.... _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4...highlight= |

Willo357, Your youtube vid is private. I have the same alt design as you so I have mines opposite too. What I find with the brackets I have is that the pivot bracket has the hole drilled approximately 3/8" - 1/2" too high. I'm going to weld the hole up, drill a new one, and finally shave down the fan housing a little to gain adjustment without hitting the belt housing. I'll document with pics exactly what I have done. These mods should be included in the next version of the brackets. I also think the adjustment side could be smaller since there isn't too much range that we can do before the alternator body hits the belt housing. _________________ 68 Fastback Build: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5396323#5396323 |
