and I also got my plans from Toby 11 years ago. I'm also still running the same alternator since then!

Thanks Toby, where ever you are!

Sorry Cactus, didn't mean it as a jab... even though I see now it came out that way. I just meant, someone(s) saw what has been done before and packaged it up.

Glad your back in the saddle. The Type 3 community needs options. Unfortunately I needed to move forward on my project and purchased the kit from CB Performance. It works great and installed relatively easy. It required no modifications to the fan shroud or housing (12V). Just costs more, LOL!!!

I find it ironic that this is almost an identical to what we've been working on. Coincidence or have we been ripped?

It's the same kit that was developed by Chico Performance Racing. I think Tram commented on it way back around page 10 or so of this thread. There are multiple vendors selling it. I saw one a couple years ago and it looked solid.

I threw a set of unmodified fan shrouds on my Type III engine last night to test out the last design of brackets I made and had almost zero issues with fitment. All I needed to do was move the pivot arm a little. The large bracket fit perfectly with no modification needed. I'm confused as to why supersuk had to move the mounting hole so much to get them to work. I'm starting to wonder if a few of us have slightly different alternators or something.

I'll report back once I cut out a new pivot bracket.

I guess you will need to post the make & model & part number of the alternator you are fitting.

Hey guys, sorry for the total lack of activity lately. I made a small amount of progress on the brackets. I modified a set of brackets that I had that were a failed experiment and think I'm a bit closer to getting some of the issues resolved with the first run. I'm going to try and transpose my changes into digital form and get a sample set lasered/bent here at work and send them off to one of you guys for a test fit. I'll try and get some pictures up here of the latest rev as soon as it's bent up.

Hey cactus, if you're looking for a guinea pig I have my motor out and I'm ready to set up the fan housing this next week so it would be perfect timing. I still have a set of your last run that I haven't even tried, so I'll check those as well. Let me know.

this is what i did in a pinch. went to the junkyard to find a 3cyl geo but all i could find was 4cyl geo metros. bought the alternator and used a pulley from a chevy delco i had laying around. total cost was 39 dollars. dont mind the rough cuts just wanted to make sure it all worked before i clean it up. looks like i will have to mod the cover for clearance though unless i can find a smaller pulley.

Alright, so I finally had a chance to install the brackets from 11th hour.

First off, my alt was a little different than the one being used for bracket design. My post was on the bottom/right side (right being passenger side), as opposed to the top/right. I would have needed to clearance the rear alternator shroud to get it to work that way. I tried flipping it 180 like supersuk did and that seemed like it would work.

I had to clearance the adjusting bracket and the alternator ears:

Other than that it went pretty smooth. The alt does push up against the pulley shroud a bit, but it doesn't seem like it will hurt anything:

I experienced the same issue as supersuk, and I'll probably only get 1/4" of adjustment, but I really don't think you need much more.

I am going to try and find a rubber strip to install under the alternator to seal the cooling hole. I don't think you lose too much cooling air through the pulley shroud hole and I don't really have a way to seal that up.

Anyway, going forward I think 11th hour should specify which alternator/part number he's designing the brackets for and then pretty much tell everyone else, you're on your own. It would be way too hard for him to design with every alternator in mind.

I'm a satisfied customer and these brackets are a hell of a lot better than the Chico ones. I think that's where my original alt came from, too.

Chad

Round 327194 of little mods and I'm getting frustrated. I just can't seem to get this alternator to fit the way I want.

Here's some pictures of what I'm up against.

This shows where the pulley sits at the lowest spot. Seems OK. Not much in the way of vertical adjustment. which is annoying. You either have to wrestle with the belt to get it on, or go up to a larger side which doesn't quite get tight enough.

You can see from the left side of this photo why I can't go any lower. The metal shroud near the positive battery post and the body of the alt hit the original generator mount. Ignore the ugliness of the bracket. It's quicker to cut up a set, reweld and pull the dimensions than it is to go back and forth getting samples laser cut and bent.

In order to get the belt alignment correct I need to push the alt right against the fan shroud, which puts these in the way of adjustment. When you pull up on the alternator they hit the lip on the shroud.
----------------

Anyone got any ideas on where to go from here? Are we looking at yet a different alternator for the kit? I'm just not happy with how the Kubota nor the Geo fit. Seems like either one has something that needs to be modified in order to get them to work which is disappointing considering the amount of time we've all got into this idea.

Makes me wish we could buy this one still...or is it available today? Was it a Bosch unit?

Bump - Anyone have an opinion on my previous post about the fitment issues?

I ground some of the rib on the alternator, and flattened the edge on the fan shroud. Other than having a pulley with a longer snout to push it out further there isn't much for in-out adjustment on the alternator pulley

The kit is available now from multiple sources.

http://www.cbperformance.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=2183

http://vwparts.aircooled.net/CPR-s-12V-Alternator-...on-kit.htm

I'm installing mine today. What do people do to seal up that big hole around the pulley?
