I have a '58 ragtop with vin #153xxxx....body tag and pan match. The speedo is dated 4/57 and there is no body # stamped under the body tag. According to the vin #'s here on theSamba it is still an oval built in April of '57. But it is a square window. I am confused. Anyone have any ideas? _________________ '59 Euro convertible--'56 type 2 double door panel w/Chick Iverson logo-....2 wrongs don't make a right, but 3 lefts do!

to go back to the earlier discussion about front sway bars. from the "alkens" thread in the oval forum.

Finally picked up a front Ghia sway bar so I don't have to bore all those searching for early Ghia parts anymore. It was not what I expected in comparison to s Beetle bar.
In this photo the early Ghia bar is positioned on top of an early 60s Beetle bar. They extend forward the same distance. I expected the Ghia to be tucked in closer to the beam. Here the hoops on the Ghia sway bar are to allow you to still get at the bolts on the beam since the Ghia bar tucks up into the body more. I guess this way you would not see if from looking underneath as easy as a Beetle. The bar does seem to be a smaller diameter but the batteries are out in my calipers.

After closer inspection, it appears that the vin tag was swapped......bummer. _________________ '59 Euro convertible--'56 type 2 double door panel w/Chick Iverson logo-....2 wrongs don't make a right, but 3 lefts do! |

more silly details:
on rhd cars they changed the pedal arms in dec '58 (chassis 2 214 885) moving the clutch and brake pedal heads 10mm further from the tunnel and the acc pedal 20mm to the right and tilted it inward 5 degrees. |

I tried searching to no avail; when was the nose cone mount changed from part of the chassis to welded to the chassis? I remember it was in 1958 but I can't remember the month or chassis number. |

Just picked myself up a, (what I believe to be) 1958 diamond green/maybe bronze? bug... Will get to taking some pics of it tomorrow and see what I really have as far as numbers and all that go. Also believe it to be a Canadian standard but stand to be corrected if it is not.

Oh yeah, that's light bronze! Very cool, I don't think I have ever seen a standard, or it could be a Canadian custom (because it has outside trim?) in L245.
Strip off that 1973 brilliant orange super beetle paint job, and you may be surprised what you find underneath. _________________ WANTED: Henry Veale Santa Rosa plate frames

I'm pretty excited about this find. Seems to be really solid.
So I'm trying to figure out if everything on this car is original to the car. I have ordered a b/c but expect to be waiting a while.
Engine number- 1-1094883
Body - 158225
Pan - 1786652
Beam - 1809895
I will upload more pictures tomorrow! |

Looking at your vin, I would put it being built around January 20th 1958.
When you do get your bc, let me know how close I am. Lol _________________ WANTED: Henry Veale Santa Rosa plate frames

1959 and earlier had the cast mount area
1960 one year only mount no cast area
1961 stamped front mount welded to pan _________________ Grapes of Wrath $200 Engine Rebuild

|
|
I have just picked up an Australian, but German built, 1959 sedan. It's a nice unwelded original car with only a recent external respray, dropped spindles up front and banded wheels on the back. (I plan on changing all of this).
Unfortunately the original headliner is 'cactus' as they say in Australia. I've not seen one like this before but it does look to be original and I would love to be able to find a replacement fabric to match.
Has anyone seen or have a headliner like this;

it was a long time ago but I think I had a 59 with that headliner. sorry but you might be looking for a while for the correct material, I've been keeping an eye out for the materiel for my 63 which has a more common style of headliner (but still Australian only) for over 10 years. good luck.
being Australian it should be a CKD car. the martin and king assembled cars had a red primer. you can sometimes find CKD stamps on parts. I've seen or seen pics of cream coloured CKD stamps on spring plates, the back of the dash, the back of the horn button, torsion bars plus a few other spots.
another Australian built thing is the seats have the colours reversed, with the seat back and the sides of the base grey and the top/front bits you sit on the colour of the door cards. on the few og aust rear seats I have seen the luggage bars were black not trim colour. |

I had a CKD oval before and just compared my car with an identical Aussie CKD but mine is a fully built German car - the Aussie built cars have Aussie vin plates but mine is Volkswagenwerks GMBH and there is zero red primer. I've applied for the museum certificate today. I'm told there were still German imports into Australia during CKD construction?
That's bad news re the headlining - mine is beyond saving but I love it. _________________ Aircooled since 1988 |

I cleaned up the interior on the 58' i picked up recently. There was 3 layers of seat covers on each seat. All the mats are there and in great shape, just need a good scrub down. Also need to try and give the original fabric on the seats a cleaning, see if i can get them to look a little better..
