I just bought this original paint 1959. My question is, are the wheels painted right? They have been repainted but I thought a 1959 was supposed to have a black outer hoop and a white inner hoop? Is that right?

You are correct, White disc, Black hoop. Up to 1961

Here, check this out: I am doing some welding to the front clip of a car I'm restoring. I noticed that all the weldnusts on the car are the same except for the two frontmost ones for the fender mounts. You can just see one in this picture. All the other ones are the same. I don't see any signs of welding and the sheet metal is recessed to accept the nut. Weird, huh?

Hey guys. I have a 59 beetle that is missing the body tag in the spaire tire area. Is there any other place where the body may be stamped or anything. The pan and motor match the origanal title and sales invoice and the car is the correct color so I don't think the body had been changed. But I am trying to sell the car and I and the possible buyer wants to have the tag or I atleast want proof that it is the origanal body. Thanks. And sorry if it has been covered. It was built in late 58 if that makes a differance. There is not even a stamping under or around where the tag was. _________________ 1964 beetle

I think the tag and stamping are the only serial numbers on your Bug. Are you sure the stamped number isn't buried in filler or paint? _________________ .ssS! |

I am pretty sure it is of paint. I am told it has never been in a wreck.

It may very well be so, but on the other hand I got the impression the general opinion about this object was not entirely consistent.

Actually the addtion of the sway bar is a mid 58 change. My 58, July built has one. My buddies 58, the twin to my car, but December of 57 built, does not have one. |
My January 58 has a sway bar attached, and the stamping correlates to a December/Jan build date? Perhaps it was added later on?? |
Really, wow, I quess anything is possible. But the plot thickens, thats for sure. |

Picked up this 1958 unit last week. Was someone's stalled 'restoration', though I'm beginning to see all the things I missed while looking it over! I figured it would be a fun project, and I've always wanted a '58 or '59 in black. It has enough aftermarket reproduction parts on it that I have decided I'm not going to go crazy trying to make a perfect 58. The bodywork welding alone, while acceptable for a driver, is no where near what I would want for a restoration.
Front fenders, while not visible in the photo, have been drilled before paint for bullet turn signals. Not quite sure what the PO was thinking, as they have 1" holes 'in-around' the correct spot, but the mounting bases aren't there. This is going to be a fun job without hurting the paint
I've read all 113 pages of this thread, and searched around, but haven't found the answer I'm looking for. The car came with a fine-spline steering wheel which I think is correct for the car. It's a flat (no dish), offset wheel like every other 58 or 59 I've seen with a factory wheel. The problem is the inside of the column, which is floating around with no bushings, has very course splines. The outer column is early (as evidenced by the carbon brush mount), but who knows on the inner. What should the splines be? Fine or Coarse? I need to determine if my column or wheel is incorrect so I can begin looking for correct parts to match one or the other!

Kick panels started on August 6,1959, from vin# 2528668, for the 1960 model year. _________________ WANTED: Henry Veale Santa Rosa plate frames

I took my seats to the interior shop yesterday
My seats were solid red with white piping, they look original, they had the same material front and rear. I went over samples and picked the closest he had to the original red and grey. I also had these panels show up right after I got back from the shop, oh well. Back to the interior shop today.
The shop is going to reuse the trim and redye the grey material, replace the cards, reproduce the red material on panels with same material used on the seats, redo the arm rest in the red material as well. |

A quick question, my car is a march of 58. Should the floor mats be gray or black? I know the rule of thumb is grey but I could sworn I saw a post in this thread showing it changing by the month. |

Grey, 56-57 were black, and in 60 they changed to the one piece front design. Make sure you post up some pics when you get your interior back from the upholstery guy. _________________ WANTED: Henry Veale Santa Rosa plate frames

Ya know, I have 3 Canadian customs, a '58 and 2 '59s including an ultra rare sunroof and it is still upsetting for me when people find cars that I can't have. I want them ALL! If I was king of the universe, people would be forced to give me their '58 and '59 Canadian customs.

Started tearing down a seat today, and found the original upholstery at the bottom of three layers. It's quite perished, but now I'm curious. Does anyone have a photo of a Black '58 with the Blue-Grey interior? Can't find one in the gallery...
