|
|
| Is the distributor drive gear spacer/washer the same diameter as the bottom of the drive gear. I hope so because I went fishing in the case for it and found "a washer"? Also what does the washer sit down on during install. The bentley is very vague and I did not see any postings after a search a pic would be awesome. |

the design is different between a T1 and a T4. Which do you have? A large photo of the washer you found would help too.
This is a T4 washer. There is only one. Notice it is cupped in areas to reduce contact.

On a T1 engine there are usually a minimum of 2 thin shims and as many as 5 or 6 if the gear has been shimmed.
T1 looks like this but it will be very shiny and show wear from spinning

| that is not a distributor drive gear washer. looks like an 8mm spring washer that fell in the case. my guess is that it fell off the dist clamp when removing the distributor. |

| Bitter sweet news. Got something out of the case. I hope what I need is not still in there. I will order one from german supply. How does it go in before the drive gear and what does it sit on. |

| Are your sure you dropped the thrust washer into the abyss of the case? It will sometimes just sit where it belongs when the drive is removed, at other times it will ride up as the drive is pulled and fall who knows where. |

Not sure. It is a fresh build. Completely tore down case halfs split, the whole deal. I am assuming it was never there after it was put back together. Got it in long block form.

| Called my engine guy. He did put the drive gear in but did not put the thrust washer on as he recalled. Would a new one have come in the bus depot gasket kit? |

Is this it and does it slide all the way up the gear shaft? |

yes if it is a T4 motor. Use grease to hold it on before you slide the gear in. Another way is to grease it, slide it onto a long clean screwdriver or wooden dowel etc, hold it with your finger so it cannot slide then put the tip of the screwdriver or dowel into the bottom hole and let it slide down until it sits flat. Then leave the dowel / screwdriver in until you get ready to put the drive gear in. _________________ Steve aka Merlin the Wrench

| It is a type 4 2.0 ge code. Sorry I didn't clarify that first. I am still not understanding where it goes though. If I understand correctly it goes down in the hole where the drive gear engages the cam? |

| Nevermind. I got it. I understand where the screwdriver would help. Does it matter what side of the washer faces up? |

no. Just be sure to use grease on it to hold it from falling. The tail of that gear fits through it. If you lift the gear back out after you put it in be aware that if it falls off you may have to split the case to get it back. _________________ Steve aka Merlin the Wrench

Now that's a stamp of approval for the builder, I wonder what else he left out or brushed aside as unneccesary? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

That was my thought as well. If he didn't have the thrust washer available to install he should not have dropped the dizzy drive into place. |
