Rear Brakes Dragging

Hey All,

I have a 74 type 1 standard here, and the rear brakes are dragging. They never did before until I changed the pedal assembly to a brand new Brazilian unit. I can tell they are dragging because after a short drive of not hitting the brakes, the rear are somewhat hot to the touch, and when I park on a slight hill, she will not move. The only thing I have tried so far is backing off the adjusters on the parking brake a smidge and it helped a little bit. (Can anyone point me to a brake adjustment link?)

The only other thing I can think that may be affecting the brakes is the brake pushrod pin. When I removed it off my original german unit and placed it onto the new unit, the inside diameter was too small so I had to drill it out. When I ddi that and got everything all cinched up, it seemed like the brakes were a little harder to push down than before. But would that make only the rears lock up and not the front? I have drum brakes all the way around btw.

Any insight is greatly appreciated. I have owned this bug for about 2 months and have driven it for about 2 weeks total because of all the minor issues it has been having. Thanks Samba.

I think you're going to need to adjust the pushrod length to a TAD shorter, sounds like your pedal is actually engaging the brakes a little.

Will do. I may have to look at the pedal stop plate and see if that was moved further in for any reason. It may just be a "little off" (pushed forward) from when I installed it. Hopefully it's just a simple fix.

I have never adjusted them since owning the car. I have had it for about 2 months and haven't driven it much. They did not drag prior to changing the pedal cluster though. I will re adjust the shoes and see if that helps the problem.

Brakes no longer drag. I loosened up the pedal assembly stopper and pulled the brake pedal maybe a 10th of an inch and it no longer drags. You were right, the brakes were slightly engaging while I was driving. Thanks all.
