The seller says restored but then says that it needs a new headliner and a paint job to finish off the restoration. At $25k firm, that should have been done. Just because you have spent $20k in parts doesn't mean that you'll get that back for a 2WD van. Me thinks he really doesn't want to sell.

Is there a thread somewhere on the board where you can ask for advice on the value of something you're interested in selling?

Seems like it would be a useful companion to this thread.

Particularly for noobs.

Very Happy

Best way to get value is to look at Ebay under SOLD items. That is a real reality check.
You can ask anything you want for anything ,but whjo knows what it sells for.
There have been a few threads started to list what the actual Sold price is ,but few people want to disclose price probably because they got nowhere near what they wanted.
You can always pie in sky price it and keep coming down until the phone starts to ring.

That's the tough part. I'm trying to sell and Audi 5 cylinder engine and the bell housing.

I can't find a comp anywhere.

Just out of curiosity why are you asking this on a Vanagon forum? The value of that engine should be known on an Audi forum I would think.

That's what I have in my Vanagon.

The bell housing and engine carrier are the tough thing to price.

I feel like I have a unicorn, but I just don't know enough/ can't find enough info to support anything.

the bellhousings 'used' to sell for ~$750-800
the carrier bars 'used' to sell for ~$300
the engines.. well value is low these days. just not many people doing I5 work/swaps.. but with the clutch/flywheel and such as a kit.. maybe catch an interested party. on Ebay I may price high,. on Samba I price by 'in the family' special pricing. craigslist gets crazy swap meet prices. to compensate for the time wasters and tire kickers.

fwiw I have a SA 5cly BH I bought new.
I have a 5cyl mounted in 2 vans in the family (1 EV 2.5l and 1 5k_turbo)
nice engines but antiquated by the 1.8T and Bostig or Subie 2.5s these days.

Seriously? Nothing horrible? Looks darn nasty rusty and full of putty to me, plus crap paint hiding it.

I feel sorry for whoever buys that after they cover up all the rust lurking in those seams.

$65,000 for a non locker, Tiico, Syncro??? Good grief.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1855721

It's unfortunate this guy is having to sell his rig after all that work, but really?
Unless it's one breakdown too many and the new wife says SELL, and he says ok, but way overvalues and gets to keep when it doesn't sell. Wink

"Nothing horrible!" LOL! Exactly what I'd expect from a place called Sunshine Auto Garage.

Ya know, he is a cool Guy and has been here in this forum.

I thought to myself when reading the ad...FAS needs to rebrand Tiico.
A name change would be a really good idea with the past track record of the early Tiicos.

Pretty slick looking van.
Personally I would remove all the stuff hanging off of it for pictures.
It would look much cleaner.

I hope he keeps it just because of the story that went with it...

I'd kill to have a rig like that, but that said there are rigs like that for around 40K in the classifieds.

Not that I can get the 15-25k I need to own just a regular ole 2WD. (I'm considering organ donation, I figure I could maybe get 25-30k for a kidney if I'm lucky.)
