I never noticed they were leaves, just thought it was camo.

There's a few Groton's in New England. Which one are you moving to? Wink

If it's Groton, MA I'll be two towns over from you.

If someone knows they have to go to Groton for a specific time period like that, my guess would be the CT one where all the submarines and submarine people go...

Welcome PackRat42 to future New Englander (if not Nutmegger) status!

Been commuting in the Creeky '69 Bug all this week, due to the modern daily driver being in the shop.

This shot is from early Thursday morning, May 30, 2012, at the I-95 southbound service area, West Haven, CT--gassin' up on my way to work...

Very dramatic storm clouds over the New Haven area yesterday evening (Monday, June 17, 2013)--I had driven my '70 Bug to work, and had to stop and document the scene with a couple of shots--here's one, from the commuter parking lot at Exit 56 in Branford, CT, viewing approximately north:

PostPosted: Fri Jul 12, 2013 2:33 pm    Post subject: My LONG boring story Reply with quote

Hey all, I’m afraid I haven’t made my introductions all around the board here, as I’ve only been posting in the late model ’68 up forum.
I’ve lurked here for a long time, and decided to join up recently, as I’m back in the VW fold.

Here’s my really long and boring background…

I used to be pretty active in the VW community back in the ’80’s.
I spent almost 10 years as a mechanic at Herb Anderson Volkswagen, in Norwood Ma.
When I worked at Herb’s, I was doing mostly the newer watercooled, and very little on ACVW’s.
I left Herb’s shortly after Herb Sr. retired, and passed it on to his son ( Herb Jr.), that’s when they took on Renault/AMC/Jeep and I was getting stuck working on all that crap.

We were a flat rate shop and with AMC’s new 5/50 warranty, working on Renault, I was losing my shirt on what warranty times were paying.

I then spent a summer working at Joe’s Auto, in Dedham, Ma. sometime in the late 80’s, doing a 50/50 mix of watercooled and ACVW’s.

Then a friend of mine Jimmy (that I worked with at Herb’s) asked me to come to work with him up in Natick MA., so I spent 3 or 4 years up there, at Gibbs VW repair.
I learned most of what I know about aircooled’s working at Gibbs.
Me, Jimmy (and “Buster” another Herb’s alumni) had some great times up there in his shop.
Those were some of the best times in my life, we did a lot of work but we had a lot of fun too.
I may have even worked on some of the folks here cars.

But times change, and I ended up getting out of the automotive field entirely.
My best friend Sean (another Herb’s alumni) took my place up there and ran Gibbs VW with Jimmy, eventually taking over the shop alone, until he got out of the field too in the mid 90’s.

The ’80’s was a great time to be a VW fan, as people were all going crazy trading in their aircooled’s for the newfangled watercooled Rabbit’s, Jetta’s and Dasher’s, you could score some really nice low mileage aircooled’s for almost no money at all, and most of us mechanics did. Smile
I have owned way too many VW’s over the years to remember, some for only a few days to fix up and flip for beer money. Smile

The last time I owned a VW there was no internet, so this place feels kinda like home !

I recently picked up a ’77 Super Convertible, after wanting one for a long time, single owner 62K original miles !
Never had a convertible Bug, so now I’m back…

… back to laying on the ground adjusting valves, having oil drip in my eyes. Smile

Still… great to be here !
I might even know some of you folks here, from a hundred years ago.

EDIT : Oh yeah, with all my babbling I almost forgot. I'm in Mansfield, MA.

Anyway... here’s my new baby, the first day I got her home :

Great story, and great car, JayO!

Welcome back to the fold!

I don't know how far you may be from Westbrook, CT, but the CT VW Association is holding their big summer show today:

Hey Steve thanks.
Damn, I'm just seeing your message now, I wish I had known earlier I might have been able to make a road trip down there. It looks like about an hour and a half from where I'm at, maybe 2 hrs. in the Bug. Smile

Hopefully it was a good time, it certainly was a good day for it , a bit on the hot side but that's much better than rain.

It was a bit warm- a good turn out though. I had to leave early to go to a bbq that involved a swimming pool.

Yes, hot but fun day in Westbrook. I stayed until around noon or so and then had to go and do some family chores in the afternoon. I took a bunch of pictures, but have only uploaded one so far--see below.

Others, once I get the chance, will probably go into the event thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=550424&highlight=

Great job by the CVAers who set it up and ran it!

Was Gibbs VW on Rt. 135, leftside, heading west from Natick center?

I think it is now a body shop called Brazaugo. They did a pan-off resto on a '68 bug and some other nice body work for various customers of mine. I have a shop a little further down Rt. 135, near Speen St.

Yup, that's the place.
We were upstairs and there was a small one man body shop downstairs, I forget the guys name, nice guy though.
We had some good times working up there, he did a good business back in the day, especially when "The Dead" was in town. Smile

I'm down in Mansfield, it's good to know that your shop there, not too many places left who I would trust to work on the air-cooled stuff.
I'll probably have to look you up at some point, as I'm sure there's going to be some stuff I won't be able to do on my back in the driveway now that I'm back in the VW club. Very Happy

I have a line on a mid-60's Beetle in Rhode Island that is tucked up in a driveway behind a not driven Explorer and an Olds 88 (?) and it is likely not going anywhere anytime soon. I wanted it, was almost ready to make an offer, then moved back down south. I just put a down payment on a '67 and this dream has got to die or I will go crazy.

Here is a link to the thread I started regarding it with one crappy pic.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=514266

Anyone interested in details on where to find it? I would have to kind of get to know you a slight bit before giving the exact local as you would be heading up to this old guys door and he and a I had a sort of 'acquaintanceship' of sorts; we talked VW and this particular Beetle's history a few times when I was able to catch him in front of his house on rare occasion. It is just sitting in the elements year round and has been for years. It needs to be liberated! I would ask that you be interested in keeping it as stock as possible before I share. Send me a PM.
