I thought it was the 412!!! |
see that was obvious sarcasm at its best. I had a 411 once. it was cool. though when the transmission went it was too difficult and expensive to find someone to repair it. It was orange and roomy I gave it to a friend who let the county tow it away, must be crushed by now. that friend is now serving a life sentence for murder were not friends anymore _________________ April 3rd 62 standard mgr/pw

I love my Beetles most definately, but man, there's just something about a Bus. Wanting one had nothing to do with a fad, or anything like that. It was all in how they drive. I'll never forget the first time I drove a split Bus. I got a feeling I'd never had in any vehicle before, it was like a voice just went "this is what you should be driving" Seeing the scenery go by and the road pass beneath you through those two windshields as that aircooled engine is slaving away back there is just awesome.
They're such useful vehicles too, even 40-50 years later. I go camping and comfortably sleep in my Buses, I've helped friends move, picked up furntiure and appliances for people in my Buses.
And they just look cool. _________________ All he needed was a wheel in his hand and four on the road. |

Hey man... I resemble that remark.

And I represent that statement. There's nothing like the feeling of driving a bus. My oval is a great drive. Gets me there sooner than the bus. But not in the same style............ _________________ Happy to be alive. Hey, Dad, wish you were here to see all this.

I don't know why others have enjoyed their popularity but i first noticed a split bus around 1979 or so(i was 10). My brothers friend asked my folks if he could store his bus on our property as it was a non-runner. A walk through small hatch is all i remember. Anyway, i thought it was cool then and when i had a chance to buy a 21 window in 1989 for $625 bucks, that is when the disease began! _________________

actually its simply supply and demand. the supply has always been low relative to beetles, and with the internet, pop culture and their incredible functionality, demand has spiked. mix in a boom in available cash with the housing bubble, and the long under appreciated bus saw prices appreciate really fast.
anyone who has tried to fit the whole family into a beetle for a road trip can appreciate the size of a bus. the people-friendliness of them has a big influence on price and saleability. just look at how panelvans and singlecabs don't sell nearly as quickly or for as much money as any other model in equivalent condition.
the hippies have little influence on them, and never really have had much. many many more hippies drove chevy and dodge vans than VWs.
p.s. the currently hugely undervalued model of VW is the karmann ghia. |
I had Ghias for years and that has always been a mantra of the Ghia folk that one day they will get their due, but they never do. Kind of like Porsche 912s, great cars, probably the best value out there in the Porsche world, but they never seem to hit the big time. the high rollers either want 356s or 911s. |

If you can't fit your family into a beetle, and that seems to be a major reason for the popularity of buses, I don't see Karmann Ghia's being much different in that respect. I don't pay much attention to that market, but I can understand that they may not have hit their "peak" in terms of value. |
It must have somethng to do with an un-named ghia that said above person owns... see you in a few weeks Lind!!! |

damn.........im not sure i agree with the kg getting the same or comparable respect/cash a bus of the same vintage will ever get,but i would be happy if they did
if kg cars ever do get theirs it will be the earliest ones, the lowlights,912s will have their day and it will be all about the 3guage "356d" cars _________________ www.vintagemotorsportsor.com

Buses are great.
I think the peak of the Karmann Ghia value was in 1986.

I used to get volunteered to help friends of friends that i didn't even know, just because you could move in so few trips with a bus. There was always a good beer payoff, though.
Even got volunteered by my boss to help move the lab i worked for. Didn't get any extra money out of that, come to think of it. No beer either! |

Its funny to watch people to when driving , about every 5th car around here you see people pointing and smiling whole bunch of waves , and stares . _________________ Cars aint built with lips.... talks cheap! |

I got mine because I love VW's, having a partner in a wheel chair meant that I would need something bigger to get the family around town. So I got my first bus, a 67 11window walk-thru. Can't wait to get the first drive in it!!!! |

| Growing up in Asia in the 70's I still manage to see a lot of splits working hard and running. The bus always fascinated me especially its design. Finally owning one now and driving one is the most unique and fun. |

I have had my rusty, brown primer painted Bus sitting in my driveway a few times and its funny to watch the cars slow down to look at it, even had a few people stop to talk about it.
Now when I have my Bug sitting in the driveway, I hardly see any lookers and it has nice paint, new chrome, roof rack and white walls.
There is just something about the Bus that people like, maybe its just the cool factor or it brings back memories. It could be and probably is that it is the only Split Bus in my town |

Its an extreme experience to drive one. Something about sitting directly above the front wheels, while having the engine behind the rear wheels. Its about having amazing traction on dirt roads because of of the engine weight over the rear wheels, and freaking out a passenger by pulling up behind another car in traffic and it seems that you are only 6 inches away. Its about safari windows. Its about having 4 or 5 buses and they are all COMPLETELY different. Not like 53 vs 58 corvette different, but totally different like a camper vs double cab vs 23 window deluxe different.
I have only driven a bug once, it was a 1950 that I took to kelley park one year for a friend. Whatever......
If you are going to stick me in a vintage "car", it had better be an early 356 or a 69-73 chrysler imperial. Aside from that, its a waste of time if its not a bus. |

My first VW was a bus- granted a bay- but it was before the trend of making everything faster became cool ('84). My hunch on alot of bus' popularity is due to the fact that though bugs were getting fat engines- the guys driving buses in Boise got the dates! A bus is not an intimidating, unapproachable vehicle at a show or gas station the way a pimped, primered and tinted beetle may be. Panels are a notable exception to the approachability rule... _________________
