Hello all,
I've been searching all over the web trying to find decent pan halves for 73-79 beetles. Does anybody make any? It seems as though they just don't exist. I see that everyone recommends Wolfsburg West pans- but they don't make HD pans for my car's model year. I DO NOT want to put the el cheapo brazilian pans in my car. Been down that road
I have recently happened upon oeveedub's pans. They don't sell full pans for my car's year either, but they put out a pretty impressive set of pan replacement quarter sections in 18 gauge. The zito pans in my car are 22 gauge... and they flex noticeably.
I'm pretty set on finding some sort of 18 gauge replacement pan for my car so... cheapo basic pans are out of the question... I only wanna do this once.
Sooo... would buying and welding in the front and rear 18 gauge quarter pans be a good idea?

I'm looking at about $160 per side.
Thanks, Austin |

I'm pretty sure California Import Parts in Washington and British Columbia carries heavy duty pans.

The pans on my car are zito brand. I bought them from cip1 in 2005, installed them, and now i want to replace with oe quality (I wasn't too impressed with the cheap pans). They are 22 gauge. I did look on their website though, but they don't carry heavy duty pans (by heavy duty, I mean 18 gauge) for my cars model year (1974). Pity though... I've heard some great things about their orange pans- to bad they don't make them for my car... |

Hey 19, maybe I can save you some trouble: no one has 18 gauge pans for our years. I'm restoring my 74 Super and need new pans, and I've searched all the stores and no one has them. It's all the Brazilian stuff. I guess there's just no demand for late model stuff.
Now, I've been told that you can get the 18 gauge WW pans, weld on your seat rails and seat hump, and things will line up perfectly. But again, I've been told. From my experience, unless someone posts pics here of they themselves doing it, take that with a grain of salt.
Wish someone would make some good late model stuff. I was in home depot today, and I walked by the sheet metal and was finally able to get a feel for the different gauges. 22 just doesn't seem like it would cut it. What gauge did VW use? |

I know exactly what you mean. Its a real pain trying to buy things for a 1974- there are so many one year only things for that car. I have to buy a used rear clip, all the bumper shocks (used), and rechrome my bumpers because nobody makes good quality reproductions (if at all) of these late-model parts.
Somebody told me that the 22 guage pans are just a hair thicker than a pop can, but because they are made of steel, they are stronger than a pop can. The cheap pans seem to be getting their strength from the embossing of the metal, not the thickness of the metal itself. I just bought some of the oeveedub 18 gauge pan quarters from their website the other day (they weren't cheap) and they should be here sometime this week. Wolfsburg West doesn't even sell the 73-79 pans because nobody makes a good repro. I wouldn't want to try welding in earlier pans and mounting the pedestals/seat tracks to them because the stamping patterns are different. I just think it would look weird.
And by the way, the original pans made by VW are 18 gauge as well.
Thanks for the reply! |

If you can swap the seat hardware over I believe MillSupply and WolfsBurg West have 18 gage. If you need the seat mounts attached it considerably reduces your choices. _________________ My beetle is not competing with your beetle. I have the yellow beetle in my town. I might be getting a Thing that will need new pans and does not have a chassis.
Any ideas on where to get those? _________________ L'audace! L'audace! Toujours l'audace! |
