What have some of you done concerning the glass on your top shelf restorations? Trying to decide if I should get new glass cut for the doors and rear side windows or try one of the products that polishes out scratches in glass. The problem I see with cutting glass is that the sides will be of laminated type and not of the safety tempered type. _________________ 53 Canadian standard oval

Trevor,
we tried different polishes on one really bad window we had and nothing seemed to work.
it was the driver side window and in the end it just stayed down for the most part.
we searched for a nicer piece and found one but by no means is any of the glass perfect.
i do know Darren D had all new glass cut and stenciled for his white 55 _________________ Cruiser pedals for sale (see my ad's)

I assume this is the route you went with on the Zwitter.
Do they need a template or do they already have the correct ones? Do they do the Duro Glass stencil or the large Sekurit?
Shipping may be an issue with glass but heck it's worth a shot I guess. Do you have their contact info? _________________ 53 Canadian standard oval

I sent mine out to have a couple of deep scratches removed out of my large logo Ghia ds door glass. The scratches are gone but now the glass has a little swirl / distortion in it. I have not yet decided which is worse. It seems in this day and age there should be a process to do this effectively... _________________ '56 European Oval Ragtop-Stock

I've been told by glass shop guys that if the scratch is deep enough that you can catch it with your fingernail, you can't polish it out.
If you're going to get new glass cut, they cut it from regular 5mm solid glass, then they temper it. Any etching of logos must be done before tempering.
Have a look at the stock glass. The top edge of the door glass has a pretty big radius on it. A shop I got new glass from uses a 3 angle grind instead of a radius. IMO it looked like $hit. The moral is, ask what edge they put on it.
I think by law they are supposed to put their own logos on it, with their DOT number. Obviously we don't like this. On the door glass, you can get them to put it down at the bottom by where the sash goes so it's never seen. If they are adamant about not leaving it off, you're kinda screwed for the quarter windows. _________________

I talked to the guy that does our glass work at the shop. He said they can get it tempered for me. He confirmed my reservations on the polishing of tempered glass. He told me that it will look like crap cause it will leave a noticeable distorted area where I polished.
Thanks for the heads up on the logo and edge finish Bruce. I will make sure to quiz them on that before I decide to do this. _________________ 53 Canadian standard oval

Trevor,
if you do end up getting new glass local here.
i can pack it properly and ship it off to you.
i would probably just make a little skid or crate to hold it.
if interested let me know

I ended up having all new glass cut and had logos laser etched by an engraving company here. The only used piece is the rear oval glass. Be careful on how they size your glass and grind your edges as I'm having issues getting the 1/4 window rubbers to fit properly in the corners even with Vewib molded rubbers.

Thanks for the reply. So is the message to them to finish the new glass the exact same way as the OG glass, as far as size, rounded edges, etc? Did you also source the glass there? Did they do the laser etching before tempering the glass or after or does it matter (or is this a stupid question LOL )?
Anybody know of a company who can laser etch my Duro Glas logos here in the PNW? _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

Yes have them match your windows exactly. The glass shop we deal with farmed it out to another company who does tempering. They cut and tempered it to the patterns/specs our glass shop sent to them. I think the 1/4 glass may have been done slightly off though hence my rubber fitment and this is an issue I have yet to address/solve.
Get them etched once you get the glass back from tempering _________________ 53 Canadian standard oval

You won't find him on here, as he does hot rod glass, but Chris Blattie,
[email protected] does the best glass work I have ever seen. He did it for my Model T, even shipped from Billings, MT it was cheaper than any local place, and it was packed to withstand a nuclear holocaust, and looked like friggin' jewelry.
Send him the pattern, what type of glass, any type of tint you may want, and he will take care of you. _________________ 2003 Samba Chummie Winner- Best Story

The cost was $375 to get all new glass including windshield . This is not including vent windows as I bought those new ones from WW and had them etched (which are top notch IMO). The laser etching was another $53.
Bruce, the roll up window edges look OK, not exactly like OG but close enough for me. Most would be hard pressed to know they weren't originals. _________________ 53 Canadian standard oval
