This trans already has the ring and pinion installed correct? |
Yes, that is a Subarugears supplied transmission that came with the ring and pinion already installed.

Moment of truth tomorrow. |
Good luck with the trial run tomorrow, Ben. I hope it all works as well as I'm expecting it to
Thanks for taking the time to make and post your installation videos. It's truly exciting for me to see this pilot kit being expertly installed thousands of miles away just like I had intended.

Just to clarify, the kit Ben is installing is the first one delivered and it can be regarded as a pilot kit. Once this one is successfully installed, the 5MT install kit will be available - in limited quantities. I will only be able to build and deliver two kits per month for the time being because these first kits still involve a lot of detail machine work from me before they can be sent out. It has been a long road to get to the point where I am producing sets of uniform parts rather than fabricated one-offs, but I've pretty much arrived at that destination now and I'll be excited to see some of these 5MT Vanagons finally come to life.

Very nice, David! I am also very excited to see all of your hard work come to life. Great job forging ahead with this. _________________ "Sometimes you have to build a box to think outside of." - Bruce (not Springsteen)

Engine is still not in, but gear should go in and out... if not for any reason, WE will find a solution. The kit is awesome anyway. I had an old camera yesterday, my HD one with sound was at home. _________________ Working with rust, grease, dirt and dust is a sad truth.

I think that some of you just don't get it. What David as achieved (and Subarugears.com) is a miracle. A frigging Vanagon with a 5 speed in it. A Japanese strong transmission into a poorly mechanically VW van design one. And that. like 25 years later.
I'm I the only one seeing the future????
Ok, let's talk about tire size... instead |
Huh?
You're surprised that there isn't a big response to your vid?
I've been waiting for this for what, 3 and a half YEARS.
Just got tired of waiting, I'm in the process of trying to put together a reversed 1.8t now.
Btw ben, both of those last 2 video links that you've posted are not working on my screen. _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

Good things come to those who wait. Hope all goes well with your reversed 1.8T.

I am thinking about this but remain confused about cost and which transmission is the "correct" one to use?
On the subagears website they have the rear drive conversion kit. Is this all that is needed to convert the trans and then bolt it up?
As far as the transmission, I am guessing there are several years that can work with a given engine, I have a 99 2.2 so...
Thanks |

The Subarugears rear drive conversion kit includes everything needed to convert the Subaru transaxle to rear engine, rear drive format. To bolt it into a Vanagon, my 5MT installation kit is needed.
Technically, any 5 speed AWD transmission from the 1990 Legacy forward can be used. But these transmissions are plentiful and inexpensive and I would recommend getting the newest and lowest mileage one possible. At the very least, try to get a Phase II (8 bolt bellhouse) from a 1999 or newer car.
Let me know if you have any other questions about the 5MT conversion.
