Hi all -

I need a replacement antenna but ...
I HATE the stock "straight-up-in-the-air-just-asking-to-be-broken-off" model...
(Mine was broken off when I bought the van...) Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

I don't want to have to remember to pull up & push down the antenna every time I park and
pull away, or stop the van every time I forget, or fiddle with a key on my ring if I remember... Rolling Eyes

I've been thinking for a long time about installing a dual-post model, like what I came across here:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=239504

For example:

I've always thought this one looked slick. It's a side mount antenna from an early Beetle (not sure of the model
years). It apparently fits well and follows the lines of the A-Pillar. It's a solid antenna, so less likely to bend...

...and related comments:

That ... Beetle antenna looks just like what I have on my 87 Westy Syncro. Put there by the PO.
It follows the A pillar so it doesn't snag branches and extends higher than the luggage
rack for great reception.
And since it follows the A pillar, it's easy to reach it. Good to know
its a Beetle antenna... I always wondered where it came from...

I have one like this on another car and I love being able to put it up & down just reaching
out the window right from the driver's seat... Cool

I recently came across a few ads for antennas like this and I'm about ready to bite:

Anyone around here done a mod like this? The top mount is adjustable and can be slid up & down
anywhere along the antenna. Not sure what the bottom mount point actually looks like, but I should
be able to make it waterproof and it should bolt right on to the A pillar & stay right in line with it.

I need to verify, but it LOOKS like the cable connection can attach to EITHER mounting point...???
It would need to use the lower mount to be most practical for the Vanagon.

Your experience, input, opinions, advice, please...???!!! (flame suit ready, TK!) Wink

I'd prefer something like this mounted on the front of the cargo bin

Odd. Reposted. Photo disappeared from the gallery. Perhaps I violated some forum etiquette. Ford Transit van radio antenna.

Why that's the Metra 44-UP21 of course! Smile

Here you go:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007WQ8R0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Note that there is a slight curve to the bottom/base piece... it's not perfectly symmetrical. It does mount very nicely and seems to seal just fine. I have a broken one on my van I need to replace. If you want I can post some pictures up tomorrow.

Edit: Here's the one on my van, it's broken, but it gives you an idea of how it sits.

Hope this helps.

^^^ Of course...That's it! Any more pics would be great. How does the top support point mount to the van?

@ Lemon: That pic is probably gonna keep disappearing until it's a VW instead of Ford... Wink

Here is a different type for you to check out. As near as I can determine this was a dealer add-on to a base level Westy that didn't have the factory antenna on the driver's side. This has been great ~ never snags, tough spring, good reception. Not sure where you'd pick one up but I'm sure not too hard to find.

Here's a similar antenna for a VW: http://www.amazon.com/Antenna-Passat-Beetle-Parati...ford+focus

Comes in 9" and 16" versions, too. It would be really nice if it would fit the luggage rack nicely...

As you can see, the top support is held by a stainless steel screw. This is the antenna that came with my van, so I had to find a match. The quality of the new one isn't as good as my "original" but yeah... the times we live in, right?

Let me know if you want any other pictures.

That ^^^ looks sweet! Nice, easy install - I can see this happening sometime soon! Short of a
"shark-fin" on the brow of the luggage rack, that's about as far out of the way as you can get...

Thanks! Cool

- Dave

PS: The Amazon link doesn't show the top mount - is it included in the package?

Nice, but I just don't see myself stringing the antenna lead all the way up to the rack,
then weather-proofing both the antenna mount and the cable into the bodywork...

That's the ticket . . . . nice that you found a photo that satifies the "non-VW" censors. (or maybe Fords are considered "other offensive imagery")

Seems like there's a lot of Sprinter photos in this forum. The "If the Westy didn't exist . . " thread would be a lot less fun without photos . . . but I digress.

Amazing how much time one can "invest" googling radio antennas and related. Then I ask myself . . . how much do I actually use the radio? I upgraded the stereo so I could enjoy my music collection.

Still, you have me contemplating this. But it'll have to wait until I do my paint, so I can delete the exisiting antenna hole.

Yeah, the picture/description on Amazon is pitiful. The package I received has all the bits, the top mount, gaskets, and screws. Both the bottom and top mounts are held with screws (so no reaching in from behind to secure from the inside). So one hole for the lead and two holes for the screws. The cover is plasti-chrome. The mast itself is stainless, as too are the supplied screws. In all honesty it's not stellar quality. I'd pay more for one of better construction but have been unable to source one. It seems Metra is one of the big suppliers and everyone is just carrying their stuff. Anyway, for $15 bucks you really can't go wrong. It works well and tucks away nicely. I also am not a fan of the straight up antenna, the pillar is where it belongs, imo.
