Hi Guys,

I recenly purchased an original owner 1964 356 C that is in need of new tires for the 5.5 inch, 15 inch wheels. I want something wider, say 185/65/15's, but the tires I see look too much like they belong on an Accord? Please reply with ideas of manufacturers tires (be specific if possible), and if you have any pictures I'd like to see how they look.

Thanks very much!

I running Bridgestone Potenza RE960A/S Pole Position. Great dry traction and long life (for performance tire).

Thanks for the input guys. Anyone else have any recommendations? I've heard varying opinions on whether to get 165 or 185 width tires? Any other opinions on width would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello-

Check out Vredestein tires. They look period appropriate, and they support our hobby by making good quality tires for older cars.

The 165/80x15 that were stock are very hard to come by in a new tire. You want a tire with a recent build date not a NOS one that was made 10 years ago. I read on internet (so must be true?) that Coker sells new Michelin tires but some have 8 year old build dates (per the DOT date molded into tire). I love the old Michelin XAS and even the ZX but want ones made this year. The 185/65x15 is about 1" shorter than original tire (per the Miata tire calculator). So ride height and revs per mile are affected. A 195/65x15 is closer in size but may not fit - especially in rear.

Thanks for the picture and recommendations. From what I continue to read, I'm leaning toward the Vredesteins. They are still available with a current build date right, ie. they weren't made 8 years ago right?

I was just looking at the Vredestein site that gimmesomeshelter provided above.

What is the series 70 versus the series 82?

Does anyone ever use the 185's instead of the 165's?

SERIES
70 175/70 HR 15 86 H
185/70 HR 15 89 H

82 155 SR 15 82 S
165 HR 15 86 H
185 HR 15 91 H

These numbers reference the aspect ratio of the tires. When bias ply tires where made, the tire was as tall as it was wide (aspect ratio of 100). When radial tires were first introduced, the default aspect ratio was ~ 80 (the height of the tire was 80% of the width). Tires with an aspect ratio of 70 have side walls that are 70% as tall as the tread is wide.

What does that mean to you? The upsides of a tire with a high aspect ratio is it gives you a period correct look and a relatively soft ride. The downside is that it don't handle lateral forces (cornering) as well as a lower profile tire. Conversely, a lower profile tire will corner better, but will be stiff, and IMO be incongruent with your car.

If you decide to purchase tires other than the standard 165/15s, you should use one of the online tire height calculators so you'll understand how your new tires will impact your gearing.
