So I took that hood down to the body shop today and stripped it to bare metal. There were at least three layers of paint here. Black, green, and low and behold the OG color of this hood -- L378 Prairie Beige. Surprise surprise, thought it was agave.
Scott (Slow36hp) my apologies man, you were correct. Sure as shieit that little hood ornament up near the cowl was a BS little windshield washer unit. Once I got it off the car I could see the little nozzles with tiny holes on each side. Too funny. All in all though, this hood is freakin' mint Not a spot of rust on it. Very lucky. This project should take off now, as a nice hood was what was holding us up. _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

Damn, this is going to be a nice Oval once it's finished!
Which tyre size are you using? I also have 16" Fuchs for my oval but I'm not sure which tyre size I should pick.. Yours seems nice!

Thanks G1 I sure as heck hope it's gonna be nice! Yeah, 16 Fuchs are the shiznit. At the advice of Franklin's VW I bought 205/40R16s for the front and 205/45R16s for the rear. Should tuck nice. Cost was $388 installed with lifetime rotate and balance included. Discount Tire is a cool place to buy tires. _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

Well its not too early to start thinking about my glass for the car. When I bought it, it came with a bunch of OG glass. It was all packaged up in cardboard and after three years I haven't opened it up or looked at it. Until today Well I guess I'm glad I did. Turns out I have no passenger side door glass, no quarter window glass, and the windshield is aftermarket, but new. Haven't looked at that yet. Here's a shot of it packaged up, partly opened up.
Here's the one piece of door glass I have....cant recall if it's pass or drivers. Cleaned up OK.
My two rear quarter windows
Best piece of all was the rear oval window
Here's a shot of the Duro-glas logo....period correct!
And the door glass:
So the only piece that I can MAYBE make work is the rear oval window. Major bad news is that all the other windows are nice, but not nice enough to use in my newly restored oval. They are scratched, some worse than others. All have at least one scratch that you can feel with your finger nail. They ain't gonna buff out. Sheit. This means I have to source new glass. Easy enough, just take it to a local glass shop and have them cut new glass using the OG glass as templates, right? The problem is I want to maintain the OG Duro-glas logo that came on the car originally. So I need to find someone who can media-bast the logo. I've called around a little bit and so far no luck. Kindof a bummer tho -- now I have to add in the added expense and headache of sourcing new glass/logos. Part of the journey right?! Cheers... _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

News on the window front is that a local glass shop is going to cut one door window as an example for me. It will have polished edges like the OG ones, and NO logo of any kind. It will be tempered, not laminated. Laminated would make the glass too thick and it wouldn't fit. They also have a custom sandblaster they use who may be able to blast the Duro-glas logo for me. I'll keep you posted.
In other killer news, the new hood is freakin'' bitchin'. Fits awesome. Too good in fact -- it showed us we have a little work to do on the front quarters. We had to actually use a porta-power to push out the passenger side a bit, and the driver's quarter needs a bit more love just to the left of the driver's headlight bucket, just above where the new apron meets the quarter. You can barely see the slight gap. Anyway, here's some more eye candy for you. It was really fun to go down to see Don and see how this hood fits. Sorry no pics of porta power work - kinda hard to capture anyways.... Look how nice the hood fits that quarter panel.
Doesn't look like it in this photo, but this side of the car from the door rearward is ready for one last coat of primer, blocking up to 400 and then paint!
We are also going to body work the engine compartment. Every square inch has been sanded - sides, back, top to bottom, even where noone will see, and is ready for primer. I took the areas requiring skim filler down to metal to prep it....
Sanded, but before taking to metal:
After
Next on the list is to make the whole front end fit together perfectly, then body work and then paint. I hope to spray color in March. Several months after we planned, but oh well _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

Nice job! That would be nice if they could blast the duro logo
If we'd ask that question here in Belgium they'd look very strange (does it really have to be that specific Sir? ) |

I hear you there! It is pretty anal! Granted, this is a resto-custom and by no means stock. But I figure if I'm going this far, and since many parts of the car will be stock-like (especially the interior) I might as well go the extra mile. Hopefully I can get all the glass with that logo, including my OG pop-outs! _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

they make acid that etches glass, you could just have a stencil made and try it. I believe they sell it at craft stores.
Or, you could just use a spot bead blaster. That's what dealers use(used?) to etch the VIN # on glass. _________________ I bring nothing to the table.

My better half is pretty handy at designing stuff on the computer , so we were thinking of trying to design a replica of the Duro-glas logo. Would be good to know exactly the font is called. Anyway, armed with a good quality electronic reproduction/design of the logo, I think we can go and have the stencil made. Thanks for the link, hadn't seen that! |
Can't you scan the glass on a flat bed scanner, with a piece of paper or something behind the logo to make it more visible? Should be about to take it from there in Adobe Illustrator.
I just realized that place is in NJ, nice! _________________ I bring nothing to the table.

yeah!... even a high quality digital picture might be workable.

| looking good so far. if i am not mistaken the one door glass you have is the passenger side. its no big deal to etch the logo in the glass, well for me since i work at a glass shop and have the machine to etch the glass. |

Only reason I am detailing / body working the engine compartment is b/c I'm not using sound deadener along the fire wall. Gonna be painted and visible so it's gotta be fresh!
You're doing a helluva job Schwing! You are gonna be driving this summer you dawg! I will probably still be doing final assembly if I'm lucky.
Small update: I ordered the pass side door glass ONLY, from South Tacoma Glass. I wanted test their quality of work before I go and order all glass. Got it back, and they did a real nice job. It's tempered and without any logos, which is what I asked for. When I measured to compare it to my OG glass, most measurements were spot on, and one side as measured from top to bottom was 1/16" short. They said that's within 'tolerance' . I think it'll work fine. As far as the edges, they looked VERY nice, just like the OG edge. I went ahead and ordered the other door glass, and the windshield. I am using the OG rear oval window (which is kinda cool). As far as the rear quarter windows, I want to use the OG early pop-outs I have, but while the glass is pretty damn nice, it's not perfect. Plus it's got Sekurit not Dura-glas logos. So I might replace that glass with new glass and get it etched, we’ll see. Pics coming. _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

Nice! I'm telling you that your build puts mine to sleep any day of the week! True I will be driving this summer, hell hopefully this Spring at this rate, but still your oval is going to be georgeous! Fingers crossed I wrap up the headliner this week, maybe another two sessions. I ordered my German molded window rubber for my 3 windows (2 quarters, and the back oval). I am reusing my old glass so I hope it still looks ok, its been sitting in storage much like yours and there's just no room in the shop to pull em out and take a peak just yet! Keep at it brutha, making some good pace here. _________________ My '57 build:

I've had them for awhile, but here are my Art Thraen rebuilt 45 Dellortos. I got these carbs used locally, and sent them to ACE for a total blasting and rebuild. These are bench-tested and pre-run by ACE....fully tuned, properly jetted for my area and ready to bolt on. Can't wait!
The air cleaners will be replaced for new. Pictured are Steve Tims' match ported manifolds. ACE even blasted and refinished my CB air cleaners, and rebuilt the linkages! Rockin! _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:
