More progress. First off, let me just say I am not a professional. We're doing the best we can with what we have. In my opinion, it's being done to a pretty high level. Don is a very talented body man and machinst, with the patience of a master. And I do what I'm told LOL. I for one am pretty excited at the result to date. The body work, especially in the areas that will be plainly visible on the exterior of the car, will be excellent. There are little details here and there under the hood and decklid that aren't 100% correct or perfect to the purists, but they are gonna be nice. Building a car is an unbelievable task. Sometimes you just don't know where to stop, as in how perfect do you want it to be? Plus resources ($) are always limited. Well I can tell you there are imperfections everywhere, but to 95% of the people 95% of the time hopefully they won't be visible LOL. At any rate, in the interest of full disclosure, and somewhat of a reality check, let's talk about some of them thar details. We had to go back and install the metal seal retainer strips on the car. I'm talking about around the edges of the hood and decklid. I said awhile ago we were planning on epoxying them on the car. Well we had a change of heart. We decided to rivet them onto the car, for two major reason: 1) We wanted to do body work in those areas that would not have been possible if we welded them onto the car. You can't weld through filler and primer. We wanted the mating surfaces under the hood and decklikd to be nice and smooth, but only to the point where it retains the body lines and honors te vintage and OG look and feel. 2) After you actually install the rubber seals, *you cannot see the rivets*. I actually think the rivets look bad-ass. One of the few non-stock touches on the car. Hopfully the pics tell the story. The final stages before paint are upon us. _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

Couple notes on installing the seal retaining strips: we used 3/32nd aluminum rivets, having a fastening depth of 1/8th". They are saweet and will never bleed or rust. Fitting the strips to the car was tricky because you can't really bend them by hand, especially at the bottom of the decklid and hood. We used metal stretcher/shrinker equipment. Bad-ass. Sorry, don't have a pic of this process, but they are pretty common in the metal working world. One last note, you might notice I started seam sealing this sucker! It's the dark gray colored stuff in the nooks and crannies in the pics. Next up, installing the hood release cable tube. _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

Enough of the BS, on to more progress. Here is a sneak peak on the Lenny Copp WCCR flooring that will be fitted into the car
We are onto the final stages before paint folks. Reveal day on the paint color for the car is days away! We decided to seal the car in white primer sealer. This will make the final color really pop, plus it will be easy to cover. Lastly, primer sealer is a good idea in general to cover and seal all your body work, to help prevent shrinking of your underlying filler and build primer, etc etc. At any rate, white sealer it is:
shot before the final seal on the body
and after
As always, thanks for looking! _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

Sorry guys I was away over Christmas and couldn't post...
REVEAL DAY IS UPON US......voila:
Hope you guys like it.....I am totally loving it. Could not be happier with the color. One of my biggest fears over the last three years was putting color on the car and not liking it. Well not the case, WHEW! Big sigh of relief. You guys should see the quarter panel / upholstery up next to the paint..... One of the pin stripes is a subtle orange, and OMG it matches perfectly. Very happy so far. Hope nobody is in too much shock! LOL I know, it's bright! The color is a custom mix of...ORANGE!
I am off work the rest of the week so tomorrow and over the weekend we are gonna paint this sucker 100% and then relocate it back to Don's place to color sand and buff it to perfection. FYI our next deadline is Feb 1st to deliver a rolling, pretty much assembed car to Creative Interiors in Lynnwood, WA to install the headliner and all the glass into the car. Hope we make it! _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

I love it, it's loud but not too shocking. Wonder how it looks in the sunlight. Either way, keep the updated rolling, it's looking awesome! _________________ The wife approved build: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6152419 |

Body and all parts are now painted! About 99.9% of the car turned out absolutely gorgeous. I left out the 1% b/c we had a little issue in one small area where some lint and/or contamination got in our clear coat. Pain in the ass, but we will get that fixed. Like I said, the doors and the rest of the body are gorgeous. I'll let the pics tell the story.
Doors turned out nice.
Here's a little sneak peak into what the interior will look like:
Thanks for staying tuned and oh by the way Happy New Year! I can't wait to *hopefully* drive this car in 2013. _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:
