I like the look! Are those well polished aluminum or a chromed set?

Hans:
The set I purchased needed to be refinished. Initially I was going to paint them, but decided to have them machined and polished. On the fence whether they are too shiny, but regardless they look good.
It's not a cheap proposition.

bstein - do you have a closeup of your wheel/tire setup?
I'm (still ) on the fence between 215/65/16 and 215/70/16, and the KO2 is my choice if I went the 27" route... Just looking for more examples of how it 'looks'
thanks! _________________ sold -> '85 Wolfsburg Syncro / 'Built' DOHC EJ25 (a great machine!)

I choose 215/65/16 b/c it is roughly only 5% oversized and I am still running around with a sdtock motor and gearing. These happen to be Load D and the drive feels infinitely better than the14" 195 Michelin truck tires that were on previously.
Let me know what you'd like photos of and I'll post.

Here you go. Let me know if there is anything specific you want to see.
IIRC when I measured hub to fender the car was raised a fraction of an inch. Since my driveway isn't level, the measurements I've taken thus far aren't very useful.
And yes the wheels aren't perfectly clean.

Thanks BStein, these posts are timely for me. We're looking at a necessary tire replacement already for our 2wd that has the 1998 CLKs. I'm fond of more height but due to running a stock engine, our worry that puts us "on the fence between 215/65/16 and 215/70/16," is suspicion that it'll sap power.
We've been running Michelin Hydroedges in 225/60. They were acquired in 2011 and now the sidewalls are all cracked. When we first got those tires, the van wasn't yet loaded with a roof rack, solar panel, and storage pod that's always got camping chairs and supplies in it. I guess it's time to upgrade to sidewall reinforcements and a tire rated for the heavy van.
We ended up driving around on forest roads more often than we felt comfortable with the Hydroedges anyway. KO2's sound good. _________________ Rebuilt 2.1 in a 1985 manual Camper

Thanks Brian!
The photos are helpful.
Like many, I don't want to 'loose' too much power via what is an effective gear change with larger tires. I have 27" Grabbers now, and my EJ25 pushes us along just fine. But, being at altitude (5,500 - 12,000' ASL), that gear change could make a noteable difference when climbing passes.
I've built a big spread sheet with all kinds of combo's, but it doesn't seem to help me much .
Leaning towards the 28" sizing, but will probably not wait for the K02. It is a burley looking tire though, I like it! If I don't like the 28", I can always down-size back to the 27" I guess (it only takes money - haha)
If I do like the 28" setup it may just keep the demons away that call for me to regear and go to 29.x" tires... - those demons are strong SOB's though _________________ sold -> '85 Wolfsburg Syncro / 'Built' DOHC EJ25 (a great machine!)

I was in the same spot ... as I'm sure we all are. As I get more miles I'll give some feedback on how things are. FWIW, the weight of the CLK helps a bit vs. other 16" setups so the penalty from the 5% addition in size is marginal from my limited driving (but not non-existent).
Good luck and let us know how it ends up!

Chris at T3Technique.com just came out with a new version of center caps for Mercedes CLK wheels. The older style (pictured at top) required the wheels to be removed, then install the center caps via set screws. The new style (pictured at bottom) are pressure fit using an O-ring to help securely seat the caps into the wheels. No wheel removal necessary which I really like.

Awesome! I noticed the wolfy ones on the site, but did not realize they were redesigned. I had bought the old set and never installed them because I did not feel the screws were going to keep me from losing one. I'd like to see how secure these new ones are. _________________ 1986 Syncro Westy

I got mine in the mail today. You do have to apply the center stickers on yourself, but they are made of a pressed aluminum, so just fall right into place.
Can't wait to go pop these on. It just takes a little liquid soap on the o-ring, and a rubber mallet. [/img] |

Some relevant information for those of you looking for "CLK" wheels.
The forged aluminum wheels that mercedes fitted on many of their vehicles. Produced by Fuchs of Porsche fame (Credit to Syncrobuss) the wheels are called Toliman type wheels.
The sizes I have seen are
CLK (7x16 et37)
E-Class (7x16 et33)
S-Class (7,5x16 et46)
The cat's out of the bag here in Norway (OddN got us all excited about them) and Toliman wheels are being bought for about $100 a set I'm expecting to see a few sets next weekend at our campout.
I ordered a set of E-Class Toliman wheels from Germany.
Info above taken from vwbusforum, cross forum references!
http://www.vwbus.no/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=42668
Might be more technically correct to begin calling the wheels Toliman wheels. _________________ 86' Syncro 2.2 Vanistan, WBXhaust, ski-pole shifter for +11hp |

I love the look of the 98-00 CLK wheel.
I have a 91 Carat. Stock everything tin top non camper Wolfsburg 2wd.
The Carat with the stock Carat springs sits pretty low.
The main reason I would go with 16 wheel is to give it more stability and not get blown around on the road.
I would like to get as much rubber to the ground without the tire rubbing on the upper control arm but fill the wheel well as much as possible.
I am not opposed to getting long studs, but what size tire will fit?
In reading I realize each van is unique but has anyone ran 215-60-16 on a Carat?[/img] |

IMHO the 98-00 CLK rim is the best 16" rim choice. They are strong, true because they are well made and lightweight. Appearance is of course subjective. I have them on my otherwise stock '87 Syncro...save a big brake kit up front which the rims cleared no problem.
A little math:
Width of any 215 tire is 8.46 inches. (215mm divided by 25.4)
Aspect ratio or sidewall height of a 60 series is 60% of 215 or 129mm=5"
Aspect ratio or sidewall height of a 65 series is 65% of 215 or 139.75mm=5.5"
So your Vanagon would sit 1/2" lower, accelerate a little faster, engine would twist a few hundred rpm more on freeway (depending on you differential ratio), brake a little better, unsprung weight would probably be a little less helping a bit on wear and tear of the suspension related parts.
I personally have not run the 215-60 x 16 on a 2wd Vanagon, but the math indicates no problem. I think you will really like the 16" rim size as long as you get the real deal 98-00 CLK MB rim...no look-a-likes...regardless of price! _________________ '65 T1 Sedan

I have 215 60 16 on clk, but this is a westy, not a carat.
I have to tell you I love these tires that I picked up.
They're 99 with an XL rating, so easily passes load requirements.
They were really cheap, I think 250 for 4 of them delivered, so I wasn't expecting much.
But.... they're solid.
I have about 10,000 miles on them now and still a lot of tread.
Definitely, I'll be getting these again.
So, that size is actually just a smidge taller in diameter than stock, 26.1 vs 25.6 ( from memory, i may be wrong )
That 1/2" or so means you'd sit taller by about 1/4"
That 1/4" closer to the fender, with the carat springs, will you hit?
That's what you want to know eh.
The clk rims bring you inboard 7mm closer to the knuckle.
I put on a 5mm spacer although I don't know that I need it.
I'll post up some pics tomorrow _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,
