Does anybody have a generic replacement for the fresh water drain cap? _________________ 1987 Westy Auto Bostig 2.0 Ztec |

I also saw them on GW and they are pretty inexpensive. Me thinks that it must be a pretty standard size over the years as I can't see a hose fitting change that much so often. Might be a universal fit. I'd have only been seeing anything in the 83, 84 years. Anyway go look at them, they might even fit the sink drain outside on the bottom. I can't see that the water intake fitting would change year to year or bi anually. I mean it fits to a garden hose does it not?
I might be wrong but look into it. If all fails get some corks _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

Send them an e-mail.
I would be surprised if there was any difference between 87 and 88. _________________ -- 1987 Westfalia automatic (Captain Vino) |

The water tank and sink drain caps are different threads and size. They are not interchangable. _________________ 89 Westy 2.1 Auto

Why do you need a cap on the drain? I don't use mine. It's just always open and 've never had a problem. _________________ 89 Westy 2.1 Auto |

do you mean the flap cover. My potable water intake on the Westy was a lock (didn't have the key). The other water was simply a female or was it male connection. I do know that it was one or the other and it was universal fit.
Some legislated areas may have a 'grey water' law and would require a stopper on the dirty or even clean water exiting. _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

Bad advice if something does not fit and he ruins the threads on the drain of the "Fresh Water Tank".
At least that's what TK has said in other posts.
Hey PDXWesty why don't you use the tank? _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

Tim, my answering so simply was because I credited the OP with having the common sense of measuring the OD and the ID and the thread width. If all fails perhaps he could use a cork parred down to fit.
I have a box full of connectors and closures from medicine, sail boats, trailers, etc... I'd probably find one that of course I wouldn't even attempt to force.
Again I made a mistake but was honestly misled by all the replies. Of course the out is different than the in which I believe is a universal fit and by the lock on my past Westy's potable looks like you just poured it in and used a garden hose on the city water. I will definitely be finding something to 'plug' the exit of the sink water without wrecking the threads. I was under the impression that there was only one outlet for water draining from the sink. hmmm I must investigate draining tanks individually.
I sure hope I don't have to say bite me _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

I've heard that the fresh water tank drain cap uses the same threads as the rear window washer tank.. At least it worked on my tank which was outta an 85 westy...
Worth a try

This is true - I just discovered this a few days ago after dropping 18 bucks on a new cap for my water tank. _________________ 1986 Westy 2WD auto a.k.a. "The Old Girl"

We're not talking about the sink drain and yes you can get a plug/cap at HD for that.
The Fresh water tank's drain is just in front of your rear left wheel.
Get down on your knees and you'll be able to feel for it.
As far as your locking cap for the OUTSIDE fresh water tank opening.
It's just an open hose from the outside of your van to the inside of your fresh water tank to fill the tank. Or, you can fill the tank from the inside of the van if you'd prefer.
As far as "bite me" goes, No Thanks! That gives me gas! _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

My last van came to me with a "pipe stopper." It's just a rubber plug that expands and seals when you tighten the knob/nut. Plumbing section or pool supply. Slightly more fussy then the screw cap, but worked fine. Something like this:

I've always thought that plug looked like the drain plug in an aluminum boat. A marine supply place might have something that would work. A quick search found this - which is exactly the same as mine:

Now that I think about it, that actually looks more like what was in my van.

The two rubber expandable rubber bung type stopper's will work--and work well.
Here's the breakdown for the metric thread fresh water tank stock screw on caps;
80 to mid 85 is some odd ball thread pitch & diameter.
They are no longer available --anywhere.
The rubber bung treatment would be the best that you can do.
Home Depost SAE scew on plumbing caps will tear the threads off of the tank drain.
Late 85 to 91 are all the same --but again with some bizarre metric thread pitch--matchable nowhere else but VW or now, Go Westy.
I do know this--VW is way outa line with thier 50 some buck prices for a water tank cap--but it be what it be--and maybe they are heavier quality than the GW caps--I don't know.
I like the marine screw in adjustable bungs.
They are tough and usually being made outa brass, should last a long time. _________________ T.K.
