Yeah, the driver door still needs done. It should be a lot easier now that I have some experience under my belt. _________________ http://squarebackresto.wordpress.com/ |

To be honest, I'm about sick of everything rubber. The pop-outs were a PIA but at least the replacement parts fit. I still haven't got them to go back on the car right though. They're really tight against the car in some spots and showing a little light in others. _________________ http://squarebackresto.wordpress.com/ |

Cleaned up the driver side rear fender area about three weeks ago. Here's the progress...
In addition to the surface rust you can see evidence of my newbness. When we bought the car we had no idea the fenders came off so easily and so when we rewired the car we ran the harness through the air channel.
Most of the orange was just on the surface. This is the worst of it.
The fender itself needed some body work (we actually started it over a year ago) from where the old timer rear ended me.
All prepped, painted, wired, and rubberized.
straightened some pinched metal around the wheel well.
Needed to ad filler.
Handy way of putting bolt holes in the new beading.
All mounted!
A little shiny too.

Alright, so I'm moving to CA (the San Francisco bay area) for a year and to be honest I'm feeling some pressure to sell the Square. I bought it to be my DD and so far I've spent more time working on her than driving her. I'm wondering (mainly from the California guys) if it is reasonable to expect to drive my Square as a DD out there? Are traffic conditions an issue? Can the freeways be skirted? The car runs good (but I haven't ever pushed it past 55ish mph) and I plan on continuing to improve the mechanics as time goes on but I'm not going to have a ton of spare time to work on the car while I'm out there. Practicality might win the day here and force me to put Bettie up for sale. If that's the case what do you think is a better market... Indiana, where T3s are scarce? Or California, where the Aircooled culture is strong? It pains me to think about selling the car, especially since I'm just now getting her in shape but sometimes a guy has to do... _________________ http://squarebackresto.wordpress.com/ |

| Where exactly in the bay area? I'm about 45 minutes north of San Francisco and up here it would be an easy DD. But where exactly? I know most of the traffic in the greater bay area regions. |

| Palo Alto isnt bad, you can still use it as a DD there. Not too hilly, and moderate amounts of traffic but nothing too serious. The city, with what feels like 90 degree angle hills, will be your only obstacle if you want to go up north, but there are always ways through the city avoiding them. I think you'll be fine with the square. |

There are garages out here for sure, plenty. But you're doing well enough that the parts availability in CA will make sure you can get anything done yourself
I live in Monterey and we have a little aircooled group for the penninsula, Monterey Penninsula Air Cooled Society on facebook. There are a few members that live further north but they still contribute to show gatherings and discussions or parts. There are a lot of type 3's in the bay area, so you wont' be alone for sure!
I hope you end up bringing it out here!

Great news! I'm definitely bringing it. I'll be towing it out to the Invasion and then out to its new home. Can't wait to be in an area with an aircooled culture. I ask about the garages because I need to leave a lot of my tools behind. I might need to defer to a mechanic just to keep it running good. Glad to know there's an active group. _________________ http://squarebackresto.wordpress.com/ |

Hey, Mike. Based on the pics above do you think I could get away with Tower Paint touch up paint? Or is it too big a section? _________________ http://squarebackresto.wordpress.com/ |

Was it a fairly large area, like my driver rear fender? _________________ http://squarebackresto.wordpress.com/ |

If you are both living and working in Palo Alto, that would be nearly ideal to use the square as a daily.
It would be mostly in-town, and you could take Alma road..
(You'll see what i mean when you get there...)
If you have to hammer to Vallejo every day to work... not so much.
Also remember, this area has good public transportation *gasp*.
Like, a _train_ actually, that people who have a real job ride.
Funny, it's the doctors and lawyers and software engineers who ride the train.
The janitor takes his car.
Totally opposite of riding the bus...
Ellsworth brothers machine shop on Middlefield Road in Mtn. View has treated me right for 14 years or so.
They have an adjacent service shop that would do work on your car, if needed.
Actually, you are entering one of the hallowed gounds of VW history on the west coast.
if you get Fischer's hot rod book, some of the greatest shops and innovations came from the South Peninsula.
Probably second only to the Orange Empire.
Unlike LA, the weather is cool, and the traffic is not as hellish.
Hit me up when you get here.
I have a (mostly) complete shop here in Santa Cruz. _________________ Type 5 Joe Wrote:

Wow! Thanks for the info. I'll actually be working on Middlefield! Go figure. And I certainly will hit you up when I get there (late June). _________________ http://squarebackresto.wordpress.com/ |

Well, we made it to CA! Spent 40 days on the road pulling the Square with a mini-van the whole way. We even took a detour and went up to Oregon and then dropped down south. Unfortunately, we missed the Invasion due to a scheduling conflict.
Had two bumps along the way. First, the hood kept wanting to pop open every time I took a left turn. I finally ended up running a ratchet strap from the tow bar through the front apron up to the latching mechanism on the hood. After that no more problem. The second issue was that after 3000+ miles of towing I have some major wear on the outside tread of my front tires. The passenger side is the worst. I need a new pair of shoes before any major cruising driving around our new home. _________________ http://squarebackresto.wordpress.com/ |

I'm taking Bettie into Holland Auto Service in Burlingame Monday. Based on everything I can find online and my phone conversation with them I think this is probably the garage you're thinking of. Thanks for the lead. They're going to start with adjusting the valves, doing a compression test, cap/rotor/wires, and checking points, as well as taking a look at a few other things I mentioned such as an oil leak that I think is coming from my rear main seal. I'll feel much better about the life of the car once a professional has been though it. After that I think I'll resume the DIYness of reviving the car.
Any other suggestions as to what to have them look at while they have it? _________________ http://squarebackresto.wordpress.com/ |
