I have a 1974 Acapulco that has just been media blasted and is about ready for paint. After a long decision process I am going with painting the full body the Delft Blue L55Z (Acapulco Blue) instead of the cream white/blue combo.

I am going to have the surrey top upholstered solid white....new solid black seat upholstery from TTS.

Does anyone know how I can match the L55Z paint code to a current paint provider's (Dupont) code?

I had a guy paint the blue parts of my '74 Acapulco in L55Z delft blue but it came out more of a navy blue. The painter assured me that he had painted it the color I requested. I ended up getting in touch with Ron Domeck (he owns the Acapulco that was featured in Hot VW's last year) and he gave me the paint code he used.

I found some old notes from a body shop in Mexico that was repainting some hotel Acapulcos and the invoice listed the paint used as Patzcuaro Blue. I would follow Ron's advise and have the body shop scan the original paint and match the color in house. YOu can take a door in and scan inside the door pocket or the back side of a dash panel.

Dead link. Any other options?

I may have answered my own question.

http://www.automotivetouchup.com/touch-up-paint/volkswagen/1974/all-models/

Looks like it's L53H Orient Blue.

Here's another source confirming L55Z.

http://www.dastank.com/VW-181-Paint-codes

Hope it helps.

I saw that chart earlier. According to a comment above and the automotivetouchup.com chart L55Z is too dark.

I'm sooooooo confused.

EDIT: More confusion.

Certainly, there have been repaints. I have seen faux Acapulcos before. Someone is getting the color right. I can see where one person three years ago had bad luck going by the code would give pause. It would for me, too.

Two choices (until something more definitive comes in):

1) Go to a shop that has a scanner and can do an exact color match.

2) Get the smallest container of touch-up paint in the L55Z code and see how that matches. If okay, go large.

Looking at your edit for 1975, L55Z looks wrong. None of those blues are designated Thing only, so I wouldn't be comfortable guessing at those. Obviously more info is needed.

Just eyeballing the colors from 1974, Olympic Blue (L51P) looks the closest to me. It is listed as a Karmann Ghia color but not as a KG only color. Still, I would try finding a place that can scan the actual sample.

I'm thinking going to a shop with a scanner is the best route. Maui is not the best place for technology but I'll work the phones.

I checked on ordering a couple of touch up bottles and got hit with the Hawaii shipping markup. $10 for product, $20 to ship via 6 week slow boat.

Meanwhile...

Ouch. Bad luck on shipping. Hope you have good luck with scanning.

Does anyone know what the numeric representation is for each color next to the color code we are mostly used to?

The 1975 version of Delft Blue is nowhere near the color for blue for Acapulco Things. Of course, Acapulco Things are mostly if not entirely 1974 models. The 1974 card scanned above lists a Delft Blue that is also L55Z like the 1975 card, but there is no color sample illustrated.

There are two curious aspects at play, though.

One, the numeric code for the 1974 color is different than the 1975 color (14592 versus 2808). As a point of reference, Blizzard White is L90H and 0892 for both years.

Two, the 1974 version is listed as a Dasher only color.

Too bad 1974 Dashers are even more rare than Acapulco Things (anecdotal evidence only), but it might be fun to find out if that Delft Blue looks like in a brochure or, better yet, in person. Since the blue used on an Acapulco is not the primary color -- therefore, probably not on a factory sticker of an Acapulco -- it may have been used on a Dasher and is considered Dasher only by being a primary color on it.

VW has reused color names before although reusing color names for different colors in adjoining years would be odd, even for VW.

Part answer to my post above ... Nope, the 1974 Dasher Delft Blue is the same as the 1975 sample. Behold...

Most paint stores can scan with a color that will be very close. Take the car or right dash panel for a match. If you have a PPG store I will send you the formula for the match on my car. If you see a 74 pearl white Thing with cookie cutters in your area say Hello to my son Todd.

I can tell you that Summit Racing Costal Blue is very close, but a little less turquoise...

The Windelton White from Summit is almost a spot on match for the original white...

That is what I painted the blue on my car with....

It might not be perfect, but for $75.00 per gallon it was close enough for me...
