Thanks Scott. It was a long day yesterday, as I don't think I really took any breaks. I mean I'd start to, then a minute or so later, I'm digging in some more.
But yeah, it felt good to hear it run again.
It only took a week to get the parts, but that's what happens when you're not in California. But then my engine machinst was pretty busy too. I'm surprised he was able to fit me in, but then he's always been pretty good about that.
I'd also like to Thank FastbackDon for the encouragement, it was good talking to you on the phone.
Supa for his comments, remember dude, this engine was already assembled once, so just putting it back together shouldn't be that hard , It's not like it's a t-4 or something.
And especially Tram, for telling me what I don't want to hear (sometimes), even if it's just a wake up call. Thanks again.
But especially my beautiful wife. She knew I wasn't happy with Wolfie "taking a crap" like that, but understood what needed to be done, and was out there getting dirty helping me tear it apart, and later helping me get it off the work bench (this was after she helped me get it on the work bench so I could take it apart. ) She even offered the money to pay Phil with, just so I'd get the crank back in time. A very big THANK YOU!!

Yes it is nice to just be able to move along, once you have things sorted.
As for the milk crate, well, I've been using them since about 1990 to rebuild VW short blocks. It works very nice, in that the head studs have plenty of room (they don't touch the ground), the crate is just big enough to hold the case half, and it's portable. It's also not just a dedicated tool (like an engine stand is) When you only build an engine once every couple of years or so, it's hard to justify buying something like a stand. I'd rather put my money into tools like a torque miester, ring compressor, lifter clips, and other dedicated stuff like that, as they make the job go so much faster and easier.
Just so everyone knows, I did get to do an oil change yesterday. There was some metallic in the break in oil, but that's to be expected (fresh bearings). It looked like the normal stuff I usually find when I've just rebuilt an engine. So I think we're good now. No big chunks of anything, and no bits of rag to be seen.
As for the timing, I was 2 degrees off of where I should have been. So I guess I didn't do too bad when I dropped the crank into the case. That was an easy fix though. The idle speed came up a little after I did that, and now it's at 825, so I'm within the 850 +- 50 rpm setting. The carb snych was still dead on, so that got checked off the short list. I also checked the valve adjustment, just to be sure it was still were I set it. With everything I did saturday, it never hurts to do a quick check. I still have a hard time hearing this engine, as it's got a NOS stock muffler, and NOS stock dampener and tail pipe. Too quiet, but I'll have to live with it. The 65 Notch has a stock muffler, but the Harley pipe (for a tail pipe), really sounds right on it (gives it a nice throaty sound, while still being quiet).
I do have to make 1 observation though, the oil dipstick boot I got from Aircooled.net, leaves a lot to be desired. It might be a WCM part, but it doesn't seal very good. It's more of a hard rubber/plastic sort of thing, and it just doesn't seal properly. I'm on the look out for a real rubber one now (probably WCM "old stock"). Maybe I'm just being anal, but I'd expect the boot to be leak free (why I changed the 48 year old part in the first place), and this one isn't. So a heads up to those out there that might be looking at changing theirs (IF this is all they're selling now). And since we're going to the MI Vintage Festival next month, I'll take a look thru the swap meet section to see IF there's one there. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Yes it is nice to just be able to move along, once you have things sorted.

mines always had a large oil/radiator hose connecting the top and bottom. no hose clamps and I've never had a leak.

purely speculation -- but I'm guessing leadership/management might have changed in the mid 2000's. I remember when I worked at OVW that they had a LOT of old stock WCM stuff laying around, and comparing it to the new stuff we'd get in circa 2007 there was a clear difference even then. _________________ 71 Squareback-FI -- 70 Ghia --73 Bay

Who here has ever got good stuff from them? Shit not me and I started odering in like 1997. I heard they got a good rep because all their original, founding company stuff was NOS German. But that was the first to go making their catalog-that I used to get giggidy over, pulse racing over the odd rubber bits I could get for my fantastication notchback or fastback project useless as most stuff especialy for a T3 that was listed was NLA

Like Tram, I used to deal with them quite a bit, but then this was back in the late 80's thru the 90's, and into the early 2000's, before the internet took off. Back in the late 80's and early 90's you could get T-3 parts from them, like door seals and window rubber and other small t-3 only bits, as their little catalog had a pretty good selection of stuff. Then Rocky Mountain Motorworks came out, and you could the more obscure stuff (just at higher prices), then it seemed like it all went down hill, after the internet really came into it's own. But then Bill and Steve's were also a pretty good place back in the day too, now you have to call them, and hope whoever picks up the phone knows what they're doing. I guess that's why ISP filled the void so easily. I mean their stuff is good (but a little pricey at times), but then so is WW, AC.net, and KGPR to name a few. But, that's why you still need to shop around. Hell, even CIP is starting to charge more for their stuff , so I guess we're forced into paying higher prices, which means we need better parts for our money.
I'll get off my rant now.

Afternoon All,
Miss me?
Sorry 'bout that, things with "Wolfie" have been kind of slow. Last couple of weeks, the weather's been quite cool, and most days, very windy (Texas-style, only Much Colder), actually giving us "wind chills" that are more fall or winter-like!
But Bob has been out there off and on doing a bit of work on "Wolfie."
Last Thurs., he, finally, was able to fix up the paint "burn thrus" , from when he welded in the seat tracks:
With more paint and clear under there, he hopes to prevent or at the very least, stop anymore "rustage."
Bob's dad is also up for a short visit, from Texas (wish he'd brought along some of that 80-90 degree heat with him.) He arrived this past Sat. after some car trouble, Bob had to find the necessary repair part here and drive a couple-three hours over to deliver it. As dad had the misfortune to break down in a No-Auto-parts-place-around-for-miles wasteland!
