Hey dude, not sure if you still need this switch, but I recently installed this BMW thermo-switch when I converted my off-brand car from a mechanical fan over to a completely electric unit using nothing but junkyard parts.

It's a two speed 91C/99C (195F/210F) dual temp switch
Part # 61311378073

BMW installs these on their radiators to control the aux. fan, but they work great as a primary fan as well. You could install it in the lower radiator hose, since it's too small to fit Vanagon radiators.

hey, thanks casey--I just got all four aligned today and they said the rack might be tight, resisting the power assist-- she turns a bit stiff. I never considered the rack as the problem, although its the only component left--veedub parts unlimited replacement may have the wrong valving or a tight piston or...I'm not a rack specialist--man I am getting lazy-- all I wanna do is drive it, and theres still so much to do.

Todd,

One of the worst things you can do is to start driving a project car.

Lots of things become unimportant.

Radio, AC, door panels, trim pieces, etc....

They only become important before car shows and when you sell it.

There are reasons why I have not bothered with certain things on some cars.

That reason is called being lazy!!!

Don't be like me!!!!

wow

I thought refs were surly intolerant dudes, according to many posts I have read around about them.
George Gallagher Is a cool guy- he actually had nice things to say about vannie. the visual inspection went very well, but the smog test just bearly passed on the 15 mph, which helps me see how worn this engine really is. But it passed.
now the hitch-- the fuel tank is "home-made" and cannot be carb certified-
Unless I get with the folks at Transferflow.com and invest 20 or 30 grand to get my design certified--[which I just may do]
so the short answer is to buy a new tank from rock auto for 133.00 and cut the top off to meet my specs--
the ref said that if he sees a stock tank from underneath, his inspection stops there...cool. he says he can sign me off,[in a word] when I install a factory tank. I swear, I learn new stuff all the time

Did not realize the tank was considered as a testable part. Emmm...Go figger.

Maybe you should have painted it black?

I have noticed this in the past that if it "looks" like the right part, it passes....

Now you just mod the top of a new stock tank and it then "looks" like stock.

Wowzers!

Well done, Todd!

<golf clap>

Very inspiring.. and am really stoked to hear the ref is working with you.

r39o,
The tank makes sense.. from the emissions system standpoint.. Maybe needs to have all the OEM-style evap hoses, etc.. no?

guidelines as of 1990 requires a fuel tank to vent and draw from the top if new or aftermarket in order to get carb certified- connecting them with cross-flow hoses is prohibited and they must be secured with straps-- i guess the bolts can shear in a collision and launch the tank. I just hope the oe tanks steel isnt too thin to weld--
and she is in the trans shop overnight for diagnostics. It never shifted properly under duress and the overdrive clutch is still on holiday. Tom at Trans Masters in Encinitas is checking her out for me--Man-- all this federal reserve youtube stuff has blown my mind. I am wiggin!

okay, eh!
I found out from tom that my overdrive clutch is worn out due to the po towing with it.--if you listen close, people will reveal their stubborn truth--my seller-- scott seabaugh, e7 usaf, said at one point--" I never towed with it that much"--which means he knows he effed something up--and being my first car I didnt know jack-- I can't remember anything about the overdrive clutch except that it worked flawlessly when I first drove her-- so It gets rebuilt after the first, eh! beauty!

coming south from the OCee I got her up to 85 and the od clutch locked in. without moving the pedal she dropped 500 rpm and went strait to 90, at which point I pulled off my foot. it unlocked at 81. but I just don't want to go that fast. I bounce between 70 and 75.
I pulled one more wire forward for the cruise control and can final wrap the wire harness now. the wipers are still being enigmatic-- fred told me the blade motor has points in it that park it, like most wiper motors. same with the rear. I am trying to use the chrysler system with the vw motor.
I have been told the load reduction wiper relay is a funny beast that is difficult to turn off without the key. consequently not to be missed.
I could send the chrysler park signal to the vw park signal 53 and possibly get success, then only using a toggle sw to run the rear, or an additional sw rear so both can run same time.
this thing is so smooth and fun to drive. I dont want to drive anything else.

Gratsi! multi bono. so the chrysler wiper motor has the same dimensions and bolt pattern but the park position differs by 12 degrees and the chrysler arbor has 2 flutes on it, so a blending of arms is necessary and is the actual adapter for it. I will have 10 intermittent positions but no aft window, so another switch will be added--a few wires are needed up front since the mit and hi-lo relays are in the e/r and the switch and body module are in the dash.
my hard drive crashed so I am consistent with my two vans as of now-- nonop--
because the overdrive tests yielded an interesting result a week ago coming home from orange county and the serv pack failed in the transaxle, so I will rebuild it and cure the little leaks and all. I knew she was due, but when? better near home [basilone road at camp pendleton] than the sequoias.

I also swapped steer racks with my red van and the rebuilt rack from pierside parts is junk-- I ran it for 2 months but it was on the van over a year, past the warrantee. 365 bucks for junk. the swapped in rack works wonderfully, except the pump still growls a little.

Try vacuum bleeding the ps pump. I made a flat steel plate @4" square and put an a/c fitting in the middle. The bottom side has sheet rubber glued to it as a gasket. I hook my vacuum pump up to that and draw it down, you'll see bubbles perculate up if the reservior is clear.

With all the coolers, plumbing, and filters new cars have today it can take weeks for a sytem to self bleed. Everyone assumes something is wrong when the system whines so the bleeding step has been a requirement to prevent comebacks.

I thought my trans failed, but a halfshaft pulled off a trans spline shaft- so I need a spacer on the cv flange and the next pair will be made longer on the left side.
I am pulling 14g wire from the engine room to the dash for the wiper relays and the cruise control--I decided I want the courtesy lamps too--they stay on after the door closes and fade out within 30 seconds. theres a little twisted pair restoration I have to do- [computer comm wires.]
there are some issues on the list I can address while she is nonop. She runs nice anyway.
