oh, my old pal Donny has lost my crank....and my number, after I gave him 5 bills toward this. late july to January and no Donny karaker.....so I got a jy motor with 63k on it and craig is working on it this week. the key on these engines is a fresh, tight oil pump. I got a new melling pump with housing for 165.00 in November. I have been unavailable since nov on other stuff, so this has been shelved until this week.
heads are done, new rockers, and in December my mom died, so I am a mess. all this and the effing park wants me out-- I'm not 55 yet. bitches!
not much else can malfunction lately--I feel unwhole without her....my vanny. my mum and I were good friends in the end, and she was 87, so at least she wasn't 36 like my better....but it still was sudden in a 2.7 week period from banging her head to the clot to being gone..shocking.
don Henley wrote in a song "new York minute"----"better take a fool's advice--take care of your own...cause one day they're here and the next day, they're gone..."
I am stubborn, and will get vanny back on the road by feb or march.

Sympathy on losing your mom. It is good that you have a hobby you can focus some of your mind on at times like this. It can be a very good diversion. Not a cure, not a substitute for those missed, but a good place for the mind to go when you need it.

I look in on this most interesting project when I see it come up.

my little brother and his womderful wife come on Saturdays and help me disassemble my moms life-- we feel like we are snooping--but the woman collected clothing for 25 years, so we are sorely tested...25 boxes and counting to the thrift store. this is like a scab I keep pulling off--
and bitchen HAS my crank==it was in such good condition, he just had it polished and got new bearings, so that's back in the block, and he painted the block the oe black with new freeze plugs--presently, I work in the coach boxing stuff and I make my grand exit after dusk and sneak back in after dinner. state law says I must keep paying the rent, so I.m snoring here as well even though I'm not 55...oh god, show me a damaged party and I will rebut them or honor them---no comers, just like all the rest of maritime thieves.
has anyone looked up "common law right to travel" on start page? [a totally anonymous search engine that uses goobers network?]
thanks everyone for the kindness-- life really sucks right now, but I imagine my vanny a purring and the future--
I sleep in a Wolfsburg outside bitchen's shop presently[when im in the oc] bcuz I hate landlords. destry shall ride again[ a jimmy stewart movie]

I too am so sorry for your loss. I lost my mom in may, and dad in '09. They both loved my '72 Bay I had in college, and my vanny makes me smile and think of them when I'm lonely. Keep on keepin' on.

may first and she is driving again--rebuilt trans with new torque converter and totally rebuilt engine with hastings rings didn't smoke one bit upon startup. it doesn't gallup at idle like in the first video. super smooth. I just had to share a jay & randy with ya
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=lo_zXe2UWKw

I have my last appointment with the Miramar state referee on the 8th of may, a Thursday-- the new oe tank is in and no leaks, thanks to the eastwood fuel tank sealer. that white stuff.
I'll post pics and take another vid--Life is stabilizing now and I have taken to doing credit repair since I discovered last month that I have 4 ccards I never knew of , a home loan and a car loan I never knew of as well. a4v baby--

good news
She is all legal now. the smog test was on the margin for nox at 15mph, so I will look for new cats later this year. I have 1500 miles on her now and she has overdrive. at 70 she runs at 2300 rpm. 24 to 26 mpg. still verifying. I finally got the wipers working and the lockup converter after greasing all plugs and remounting the brake pedal switch to depress fully. the cruise control and air conditioning are on deck. she vacuums down and my compressor clutch wire has continuity. seems the forward dash switches aren't getting power. there's a lot of vw guage and steering plugs that need weeding out. I just reinstalled my 18 gallon tank with understraps. the hatches have latches to keep them down. The side shields are in which isolate the engine from the back seat linkage area.
She is driving every day and is smooth and dependable. I will drive her to the costa mesa show on the 28th. Things seem a lot better now.

Andrew

I have followed both builds ,yours and Thumpers.I think both of them are way out of the box ,just in different directions .
I am impressed with the follow through of both builds. All to often you see dead cars in shops that started with a wild idea and end up going to the scrapper as the inventor never quite got around to finishing it .

I got 28 mpg with my 97 trep in Utah, and the van gets 26.5 highway. she is ready to charge after I had the aft evaporator hanging apart for service. I replaced the 1/4" black foam around the evaporator and tested the wires continuity, which I didn't know how to do a month ago, and greased all connections. these plugs get dirty and sluggish with age, sitting or in use, like they have drank too much fluoride or something. damn- they fluoridate in provo too.
the un needed vw steer column wires were pared out, and as soon as I pulled a bk/w wire from my ign-on to the load reduction relay, my x rail became energized and I have power to all my vw dash switches [enviro and ac]. those hamster fans aft kick ass.
some kind of siphon problem with the windshield washer --full of water, buzzing and no rain. silicone the grommet on the little tank and tube inspection will help. I have a bunch of 1.9 aircooled engine parts, enough for 1.5 engines I will bring to the sshhh classic in costa mesa.

I just drove her 1400 miles to Coeur d' alene, Idaho, and got 23 mpg at 64 mph. it's interesting that you aren't allowed to pump your own gas in Oregon. different states/nations deal with the tyranny in their own ways--I just checked the muni water report for cdl and they chlorinate a little but DO NOT fluoridate, unlike everywhere in California.
vanny hums down the road flawlessly. I played with the left front tie rod a little to dial the steering in as she pulled to the right a little. I shimmed up the deck area with foam topper pads and laid a vinyl truck tarp over it and then an air mattress from target--not walmarrrr.....republic of china.
I took 3 days to get here and its actually around 90 f midday. there is no drought here, and the forests are healthy thick and perfect.
I can get a 1200sq' shop for 670.00/mo while I look for property.
I just gotta get out of the socal ant farm.
I made sunbrella cadet grey window blinds that snap on. they make me oversleep. then I took more of the rhinotex truck tarp and made a water pan for the cargo floor that, when parked with a right tilt, drains out the slider ajar. I kneel every other night and sponge bathe. I use a gallon each time, and brush the excess water out the slider. being in civilization most of the time, I rarely have to use the black bucket, but its a good back up system. I recharge my lappy and cell at jack box every 3rd day at bkfst.
bought an inverter at home depot here and it will operate your dead lappy or cell, but it wont charge them. now I have to learn about snow....
thanks to Idaho Doug for coming down and yacking with me on such short notice--He is cool and nice. An interesting fella!

as a note, I have been back home for a week now and the brakes needed tweaking--I came down the mountain and had to pinch her down to 25 on this curvy 13% grade road, repeatedly. I stopped at the bottom and the front brakes were smoking, so, I bypassed my stock vanagon brake pressure limiter to the rear, and she brakes with much more balance now. that reducer was for the old drum brakes, so I could gut it and replumb to it. I can take temp readings front to back too just to see.
she still runs smooth with almost 5k miles and her first batch of synthetic oil.
tomorrow I get the front realigned and re-tired.
I have hit my head twice on the long wink mirror, so a ski boat banana mirror will replace it.
It took an elephant and small boy to find npt to iso bubble flare fittings for my wilwood brake pressure proportioning valve so I can use the 11mm wrench. you screw the knob in all the way to allow full pressure to the rear. I have begun by unscrewing it 3 full turns out of a possible 20, and they seem more balanced.

turned the wilwood proportioning valve out a fourth turn-- I will make a viddy of her latest exploits on those mountain roads--she drives like a dream now, and the list of undone things gets shorter.Decided that underdash floor lites will be door activated and the overhead lights inside will be switched, I shimmed up the bed area with home depot Styrofoam and I don't need to hang for her to cool b4 bed time on the road. I may move the battery back to the oe locale under the lf seat as it seems to get the water boiled out of it every 10,000 miles or so [down an inch but not exposing the plates] so she started wah waaaah waah as the amperage dwindled in the shallow battery water. after adding water to it, battery seems fine again. -I totally forgot to connect the rear lic plate lites and a national forestry officer in plumas nforest let me know it, as well as the fact that it was cannabis harvest season and could he please search my vanny--sure I said, so he stuck his head in the lf window as halley sniffed him and he said--: it doesn't look like you have anything , but these vans do have a lot of room..."
the search is a tenuous issue, but I didn't want to be detained while a dog was on the way--If they suspect anything weird, they could just tear your van up inside---my imagination mostly--he liked my alex jones sticker as well, so he was a cspoa member--this police state isn't as poleeecy as I thought-- the cal hwy patrol have adopted a new leniency policy too-- my last 3 encounters were positive with them. cheers

as I am moving to meadow valley presently, 540 miles north of orange county, I experienced a cv joint failure after trip #5. the EMPI 930 cvs started binding and thumping, so I took the left halfshaft and left her parked at sisters. I still have the lobros from my beemer donor, so they will be installed. life is too short for junky parts from empi.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uv0Ko2OU4Ec

otherwise, vanny is a real workhorse--my mechanic craig bitchen has been running in tandem with me with his 88 2.1 tinny, and he does best at 64 mph. I still hate the midrange revving for ten hours--but she has done 2 trips so far. I bought a 89 Silverado 3500 with a 454 th400 that now runs like a top. she has a brickmasons flatbed 9' long for my ez camp to travel on. see la Habra shop pic on pg 6 [or thereabouts] -- a big steel frame I will drive up, towing my next donor, the 97 trep behind with escort. it all waits until after our little storm this weekend so I am fitting a bimini top to a cabin cruiser today. happy december

Gee, I thought you lived in a mobile home park in Carlsbad. I'd seen you at a couple of the San Diego Vanagon meet-ups but not really talked to you. Your conversion seems so interesting. Best of luck in your move.

That thing about not being able to pump your own gas in Oregon is actually OK with me but I don't really get it. I was really disappointed by an experience in Grant's Pass. The kid was the rudest retail clerk of any kind I have ever encountered. He was really trying hard to provoke me and I don't know what started him off. Maybe chalk it up to testosterone poisoning. Seemed to have come from a bad home, if I may be so bold. Otherwise, wonderful experiences in Oregon. I like their coffee shop chain - Human Bean.

Happy Holidays to you, your cool conversion and your leetle doggie.

Chuey

Thummmper, in the picture of the gas tank, after you cut it open. What are the objects with the hoses? The one with the black hose must be a filter for the fuel pump, but what is the one with the blue hose? The reason I ask is I was going to run a coat hanger or something stiffer to knock the filter off the end of the pickup for the pump. The pump, the third one, is making a lot of noise. Just want to see if it is the tank causing the problem. Do you think it can be knocked off? Thanks

I enjoy your build and adventures by the way.
