what would be some good wiring plugs to use for the engine wiring and the lights mounted to the cage? i would like 2 plugs mounted on the firewall so when i have to remove the cage i can just unplug all of the lights and the same for the engine just unplug it. _________________ 68 bug 1600sp 30/31

i was trying to figure it out. you should need 9 wires or maybe 10 with a tach. 4 for the lights without reverse lights and if the lights are grounded through the cage. 5 wires for the engine and 6 if you run a tach. the seven wire plug does have a connection for a large gauge wire for the alternator/generator which is the only wire that i would worry about being large enough. |

i've been looking for an online source for those plugs, but i wasn't sure what they are called or where to look.
I'm looking for a simple idiot proof way to hook up some removable lights. |

Just be sure when hooking them up with trailer style connector (molded type) the "female" connector needs to connect to "BUG/BUGGY" wiring side and male side to lights.... This is so if somebody turns lights on while lights are unplugged you don't have "HOT" male ends exposed that can short out something and blow fuses or cause wiring to burn....
IF you use the 4-6-7 "hooded" style connector when all connections are "protected' its not a issue....
Good reference to "sources" of electrical stuff can be found here....

I used the 6 pin trailer plug on my rear cage, I just unbolt the cage, pull the plug and i'm good. Oh, I do have to unbolt my oil filter and unplug the breather hoses but it's real easy to get off. _________________ http://www.wix.com/baja5s/nightrun |

For the engine connector you may have:
hot to coil
tach signal
oil temp sender
oil pressure sender
field for alternator
What else do you have for 9 or 10 wires? Hot from alternator has to be bigger than 16 gauge. |

My engine connectors are on a different harness, just my rear lights are on the quick disconnect. _________________ http://www.wix.com/baja5s/nightrun |

Yeah, you wouldn't want to disconnect the engine every time you had to take off the rear bumper. _________________ ---

I like using cannon plugs. You can google that and come up with a ton of hits. They are what is used in the aircraft industry. _________________ “It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.”

Geez just hit a salvage yard and grab the connector(s) of your choice..
I know my rail is going to be hooked up like you are talking about with a series of connectors from the 80's dodge Fwd stuff.. Why you may ask.. Well I have lots of them.. and the connections most of the time can be repaired with light modifications to standard issue cheapo spade connectors.
That factory old stuff is better quality on many models and makes than the aftermarket stuff anyway (unless of course you buy the aircraft stuff) |

Old crap from junk yards is just that.... Old crap.....
There will come a time in your life when you will get tired of patching old s**t together to get some thing to work... As soon as you start buying new, purpose designed and applied hardware your quality of life revolving around your hobby will get better and your days out more enjoyable and your ride more dependable.....
Been there, done that, got an old ragged "T" shirt and I threw it away...

I think there is a difference b/t simply a cobbled together junkyard job and one that is geared towards spending the available funds on stuff that matters..
But who knows you might be right.. He could stop buy walmart on the way home and pick up some brand new Chinese built trailer parts or cobble together some old junk..
Come on man..
You know there is a line in there somewhere.. Otherwise you would be running a brand new, shiny, modern car around the auto-X course instead of tinkering with that old junk..
Now wouldn't you??? |

Well I wired my two buggies with ALL NEW wire, plugs, fuse panels, relays, switches, everything....... Everything worked FIRST TEST.... NO goof ups no bad connections.. NO PROBLEMS PERIOD......
First buggy now has been on the road 8 years and not one problem, not one burned out lamp.....
Second buggy 2 years now and not a single problem......
Something to be said about NEW parts and doing it right.........
AND I have yet to receive any complaints from any of the other buggies I have wired.... Also including full street legal, "SHOW" 32 Ford Roadster, Porsche RSK Replica .....

i am thinking maybe that 8 square connector in dales link for the cage lights.
i need this to keep the car street legal...
1 stop that branches to both sides
1 tail that branches to both sides
2 turn one for each side
1 tag
so thats 5 of the 8 and the white wire wouldnt get used so thats 2 wires left i can use. for those i was thinking a rear spot light and maybe a lighted wipe. is there anything else i might have over looked that i might need 12 volts for on the cage? _________________ 68 bug 1600sp 30/31

whats less then 20 bux going to hurt for a new plug? by the time i go to the junk yard after a used plug they are going to want the same amount or more. but yes i get your point. a good used plug from a newer car would work good also. _________________ 68 bug 1600sp 30/31
