Thermostat boiling water test....

Took my thermostat out since I am doing work on cooling system just to see what kind of shape it was in. Everything looked good, no broken rubber, spring fine. I placed it in some boiling water "200 degrees plus" and it opened. Then let the water cool to 180 degrees and placed it back in water and the unit did not open, not even a little bit. This stat is rated at 87 degree, shouldn't it open at 87, or am I missing something.

I hope you mean 187 Degree T Stat .

It should just start to open at that temp and open more as temp rises .

T-Stat is designed to keep engine at optimum temp so they open and close accordingly

Dropping it in boiling water is not a good test , place it in cold water and heat it up from there and see what happens

87 degrees Celsius which us about 189 degrees Fahrenheit.

Don't know about the 87 or 187 degrees. The stat has 87 on it and the venders online sell and advertise anything from 77, 80, 87 degrees. I guess that's what had me wondering why it opened at 200 deg plus and had 87 stamped on the t-stat. So 87 means 187?

87 means 87 degrees Celsius which is 189 degrees Fahrenheit.

As the previous poster has stated, 87 degrees is in Celsius, not Fahrenheit. 87 degrees Celsius is about 189 Fahrenheit, so when you put it in water, then heat it up, it should open up at 189 if you are using a Fahrenheit thermometer.
