Now that the peeling paint has been sorted. Back to assembly. I dropped some coin on the first wave of new bits. Lots of rubber and plastic bits. I did however get the JK sliding window for the right rear. Ill take that window and put it on the left rear - no vent window and no real need for a slider window when the cabinet takes the majority of the window. Maybe later Ill put in a rear pop out Think

For now I dressed up the pedestals with their new rubber. Put the passenger seat in and fit the front carpet for a look. I also laid some deadener on the pedestals and inside the passenger door.

Ill either do the doors and dash next or the cabin floor and cabinets.

What is your take on the carpet? I'll be in a similar position to yours, once mine is back from paint. The thought of putting the old carpet back in is a little bothersome. Is there that much of a noticeable difference? Look forward to your take on things, now that its installed.

She really does look beautiful. Can't wait to see her completely done! Cool

That is the power that goes back to the fridge. It didn't sit right under the mat or the rubber so I decided to reveal it.

The carpet is no where near the correct color or spec. But when I walk 100 people by it 98 of them will think its amazing, one will be questioning it and thats because the last one of you in the know told him it wasn't correct. Wink

Im good with 98%.

I did a capet compare awhile back.

Thats stock - no fade og on top. The new stuff on the bottom.

If you wanted to you could take the carpet to an upholstery shop and have them sew binding around where you had to cut for the wire. This would stop it from unraveling.

So I went to start putting the floor in today - get the layers up to the carpet. Throw some dynamatt down and what not. Then I found the rubber for the slider and was side tracked.

So I pulled the slider off, popped in the new rubber - sure is nice, pulled and cleaned most the slider hardware, put it all back together. Cool

Sure is nice and snug.

In the same box I found the og door step grips. So I got the heat gun out, got them all gummy - sprayed the back with a bit of 3M - boom nice side step grips that stay in place.

The two middles will be rebuilt Jalousie with those accessory edge protection things on them. Cool

The pass rear is a JK slider and the driver rear is going to be the solid one from the pass side. No vent-wing window Twisted Evil

Im not trying to have a leak.

Maybe later Ill put in a rear safari.

Got some more doo dads cleaned up - namely the headlight stuff. This being a 74 has the plastic type headlight trims. The term plastic is often used as a derogatory remark, one most likely passed to us from our grandparents to our parents then onto us. A throwback to a time when cheap goods from Asian markets flooded the US market for the first time in mass. If it was plastic, it was cheap and not made to last long. Crap, not of US origin and not made to last from metal or the like. Laughing

And as most of us know growing up in an era of Plastic - not all carp is the same. We have different levels of crap. Some as in real crappy, others are just plain crap.

Germany is known for making good stuff. So Id assume that in the 70's when presented with the idea of making metal parts from plastic there had to of been a ruffled boars brush or two on ones Oktoberfest hat. But being Germans I can see them saying - if we are going to make crap, it better be the best crap out there.

With that idea in mind I present you my headlight trim rings. I have no doubt that these are the originals. These were installed by Karl at the Hanover factory some 40 odd years ago on this bus and sent on its way. I can only guess the adventures the bus had from 74 to 89. But the tabs stop for 1989 in San Antonio Texas. There this bus sat in a field with other buses. Rain, Sun, Wind, Sun, Dirt, Rain, More Sun. Even more Sun. Then my Girlfriend Michelle and I rescued the bus in 2011 from the same spot it had sat for all those years. When I stripped the bus, these parts were taken off, glanced at for condition and placed in a box where they have sat for the last couple of years. The only life lived other than being on the bus was when I put a battery in the bus and found the bulbs to work. Cool

Now with assembly of the beautifully worked body brought back to better than 1974 conditions these parts are taken out cleaned and inspected for condition.

This is where the crap thing comes in. It seems today everyone wants to use a paste or a tube of goo to smear on your bright work. I remember when Mothers Mag came out. I could of swore some dudes would spread that stuff on toast they loved it so much. Granted a paste with fine polishers in it, like toothpaste can clean well and leave a protective film on the polished. Ill probably put a coat on these as well Rolling Eyes

But Im kinda old school. I always have bags of steel wool on hand. This fine steel once rubbed on any polished or chrome surface brightens up any day. This plastic crap rings are good example of what a fine piece of wool can do.

Look now as the the original finish comes back to showroom condition. Not bad for rings made on the cheap, by anal perfectionists and cleaned with a technique most 20 somethings would know to try. Wink

Got the OE headlights cleaned, restored and placed back on the 74 Westfalia. She can now see!

Looks great! Where did you get the VW emblem? I ordered one from Busdepot and its at best Ivory in color and cheapest looking thing I've ordered to date. Looking for a "white" one.

So two things. In regards to the above plastic VW emblem on the panel. Thats out of the box new put on over a year ago now. Here is a - this bus is outside all the time present shot of it. Its still looking good to me but has yellowed.

And as posted in the BN4 thread I have going - I needed the return air piece in a recent ad. Ive since bought it and got it. I removed the part the snorkel goes into and will be cutting and placin on the 74 soon. This was the last piece I was missing to have a 100% complete factory correct BN4 eberspacher gas heater set up Cool

Yes sir it is a headlight squirter. Im fully tickled that I have all the stuff to make it run. Just got to get around to installing it. Hoody hooked me up with a second set that completed my first set not to long ago. Now I have a working main pump and OE wiring harness.

I cant wait to post a you tube vid for this - Bay Window Bus Headlight squirters! Cool

Oh and I did get the threshold trim. I ended up having to use something different on my 77. I may use it on the 74.
