You probably know this Ben, but be careful with the dipping. Some of those chemical solutions DO NOT play nice with magnesium cases.....
Very nice progress, this ghia definitely went to the right home. _________________ desired speed > disposable income |

Thanks for the kind words and advice Chris, good to hear from you!
I'm taking the engine to a local mechanic who is very involved with Formula V racing. He has a ton of experience with VW engines, so he's the logical choice to work his magic on prepping the case for reassembly.
If anyone's looking for an engine builder in SE Michigan, he's your man (sambaname: satterley_sr). _________________ Ben

Bodywork nears completion. It's around 95% done and as soon as the paint sample comes and it looks good (fingers crossed), she'll go to the booth!

Bodywork is complete! Even though it's kind of hard to see the change in these pictures, the paint booth awaits!

Oh man. I wish.
The manager of the bodyshop had a medical emergency last week and is undergoing surgery. The car is a few days away from the booth at this point, but the painter has apparently been instructed not to even think about working on another car until mine is done.
I'm enjoying the wait though, to be completely honest. It's kind of like being a little kid at Christmas time again. _________________ Ben

Although I don't have pictures, I've settled on a plan for the engine and it is currently at the machinist getting some lovin'.
After measuring all kinds of different surfaces and IDs and ODs, we've decided that the case will be align-bored (already been done actually)
- the pistons cleaned up and re-ringed
- the cylinders honed
- new bearings all around of course, as well as all seals and gaskets
- the heads bead-blasted, checked for cracks and rebuilt with new valve guides and valves.
- re-ground camshaft and new lifters
He's done the necessary machining and I will be assembling the whole thing this winter... if I can find somewhere heated...
Nick, the bodyshop manager is back from the hospital and has laid down the law: the car will be back in my possession by Oct 14th.

L 444 Malachitgrün / Malachite Green
It's a '60 only Ghia color, but for some reason I kept coming back to it when I was looking through colors... _________________ Ben

I went back and forth about what to do with the wiring harness. For the most part, the original rubber sleeve was in ok shape, but there were quite a few tears and holes especially in the parts that are visible in the trunk and engine compartment.
When I decided I wanted a tach, I concluded that re-wrapping the entire thing in cloth wiring harness tape would 1) make it look nice and 2) would allow me to add the tach wire to the coil in with the rest of the main harness. I completed that today:
Work also brought me near the body shop, so I stopped in unannounced. They've completed painting and are halfway through wet sanding. Plans are to pick it up Monday night.
If you recall how the rear driver's side quarter looked when I started, you'll know how happy I am to see this:

I too would like to say how nice your car is turning out. I really like the color choice & I'm a fan of black. Your ghia is looking awesome. Keep moving forward & inspiring others to do the same.
